Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

Yeah, there are reactors #1 through to #3 in Fukushima.

What? Why would the loss of coolant lead to an explosion?

the same way it happened with reactor 1 and 3 (today). As long as the inner containment stays intact that explosion isn't a problem.

I'm not an expert, but if there isn't any cooling water the reactor gets pressure and it explodes or something.

I guess its similar to PC components, processors etc (without the explosions though). If there isn't anything to cool it off > it overheats and you know the rest.

Quote from NHK's news:

"Fears of an explosion grew when the water level of the No. 3 reactor dropped, exposing fuel rods, and a reaction with the steam generated a large amount of hydrogen. The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says that even if the top of the building has blown off, the reactor chamber will not be affected."

E: seems like Nagano is having some earthquakes, any confirm on that? Just a regular "nonharm" aftershock?

Yeah it ended up being nothing more than an M3 in Ibaraki.

Summary from press conference just now:
- They have evacuated remaining people from the 20km zone.
- No significant increase in radiation around the area.
- In plant #2, the cooling system haven't been working fully.
- Right now the water is two meters above the rods and sinking.
- They think the can restore the cooling system by relieving pressure from inside the container.
- If this fails, they'll have to resort to seawater.

Rolling blackouts begin in Tokyo.

Edit: Sorry I'm getting really tired, I mean Tokyo Electric is beginning rolling blackouts.

Wikipedia: Nuclear meltdown gives you an idea of what happens if the nuclear fuel rods are left uncooled. There won't be any explosion. The previous explosions were (expected but unfortunate) consequences of venting, but have nothing to do with what could happen if there's a meltdown.

Yep... I flew into Japan the day before the earthquake lol... wasn't expecting this kind of tragedy to occur, was really sudden too... ><

Lot of scared people even now, people are overreacting a bit much though and toilet paper, food, water, etc are sold out in supermarkets in certain areas

This is very bad. Especially if they think there will be an explosion. But I guess with this they mean that no.2 will follow with it's own hydrogen explosion. There won't be a nuclear explosion.

If there is a complete meltdown with no cooling that will generate a lot of heat. And heat means pressure. If the pressure is too great it will eventually explode and that can cause uranium to be blown into the air just like with Chernobyl.

If a 7.0 aftershock hits during meltdown, that might have very serious results.

It is really worrying that several reactors are on a knife edge and not just one.

When your country was hit by a 9.0 EQ and 10m tsunami, its not overreacting. Its normal.

Well, you might be right i wont argue about that. But nevertheless the cooling going off isn't the best possible thing to happen right know.

It's not like everywhere was hit by the 9.0... the east coast got hit really hard though. Even in areas that weren't really affected, is what I meant. Though there are a lot of things to factor I suppose... we have scheduled blackouts coming... well, they were scheduled but they keep changing the time or calling them off, just in case we don't have enough power supply at the moment

Man, it looks like there's some insane power savings going on right now all over Japan.

People are shutting off displays, elevators, vending machine lights...

Imagine if everyone'd been doing this all the time.

Tepco is also saying it has safely cooled down two reactors at the Daini plant; they are still working on cooling the three at the Daiichi plant - both in Fukushima Prefecture.

Makes you realize how much people like to be comfortable.
It's only when something big strikes, people buckle down and sacrifice their comfort.
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
