Don't get one of those massive "tell you the time in seven different languages and timezones, plus the current position of the moon, plus stock market updates, not compensating for anything at all... watch" Get a sleek, subtle small/medium sized watched, make sure the actual watch looks fine on your wrist, you can get wristbands adjusted/replaced. But it all depends on whether you want a watch as a fashion accessory or a watch for the amount of "useful" information it displays. I just want time (date is ideal as well) Yeah, I'm aware of the general trend. I want something that tells time, and has the date. Other than that? A seconds hand. But in all seriousness, any specific models?
I don't think I can suggest specific models "for a small wrist". But I can give you a reference. I have a modest 16.2cm/6.4inch wrist, and I can comfortably wear a 42mm/1.7inch diameter watch (excluding crown) with 22mm/0.9inch strap, without it looking too big. I have a slightly smaller watch which is 37mm/1.5inch, and that's actually looking a tad small.

My first watch :D Just got it on Sunday. Very happy with it, the face has a lovely finish which is not done justice in photos.

My watch, doesn't use batteries either, runs on my arms movement (I don't have to shake my hands constantly for it to work lol..)

there's a motor inside that rotates as you move your arm/the watch, that gives it energy. technically there's a battery in there where the electricity you generate is stored (so that you don't always have to be moving for it to run).

Yeah, most mechanical watches today are automatics I think. Pretty cool for sure though.

I was thinking it was somehow mechanically, rather than electrically, transfered.

There are mechanical automatics and automatic quartz watches. The link Juliette has actually describes mostly the former, and yeah it's mechanically transferred in that case
The automatic quartz watches have an electrical generator, and store electricity (generated from your hand/wrist motion) in a battery. The mechanical automatics wind the mainspring (the spring that turns the gears and thus the watch hands) so you don't have to do it manually; the small clockwise/counterclockwise motions your hands and wrists make help wind the mainspring, which stores that energy and slowly uses it to make the hands move.

i figured i'd post in here to get some responses from all you watch enthusiasts.
so right now, i only have one watch: some nice, small rolex that my uncle gave me. i usually don't wear it; only to big occasions when i'm dressed up, like weddings or whatever.
i want to get into the habit of wearing a watch whenever i go out, but i don't think that wearing that rolex all the time is a good idea. any suggestions on what kind of watch to get? what are some decent brands to look at that aren't too expensive? i have a pretty skinny frame, and skinny wrists too, so smaller watches fit me better. i want something that goes well with slim-fit dress shirts or polos.
once i save up some more, i was thinking about getting a skeleton watch too. now, i dont know shit about watches, but i just think skeleton watches look really sexy and badass.
thoughts?

Question, why do you think wearing it all the time wouldn't be a good idea? I guess I understand if you fear being robbed or something, but unless you live in a really shady part of town I wouldn't worry about it. Man if I where you I'd just rock the Rolex, what model is it btw?

Aerisky explained it well, but maybe we could use 'kinetic' for automatic quartz to make things clearer, as introduced by seiko.
Hey Ieatkids5 (pretty weird saying that),
What rolex did your uncle give you? I'd love to see some pics, because that is one hell of a gift. As for your next watch, there are so many decent brands out there you really should give some more specifics. I guess if you are really looking for a skeleton you want a mechanical. There are loads of chinese watches with seagull movements that are really cheap. But to be honest, i would advise you to save up and by a watch with decent movement and a nice case back so you can look at the movement whenever you want to. Good luck!
@plasmidhost: True story? That's an awesome find. I bet it was still happily ticking, or maybe not due to lack of light? ^^ How did you find it exactly during a fishing trip?? Nice watch enjoy, even though i am not really into gshock myself.

Woohoo. I just got two cheap watches from family members. (old watches they had...)
I'd sort ofl ike to get a decent quality watch, but I'll try these for now.

Do auto- quartz still have the "quartz" label on the face?
If the rollie is "small" like you say, its probably a datejust? If its modest (no diamonds, stainless/white gold) i dont see whats wrong with using it every day. As long as you dont work in manual labor where it'll get all scratched up.
If you still want a recommendation... How do you want it to look? Skinny isnt really a thing to worry about. I have tiny wrists: bracelets can be adjusted and up to a 42mm looks ok on me. Do you want rugged, or sleek, i think. Something that excretes power, or something that looks naturally a part of your wrist. Divers, or Chrono?
(i recommend the divers)
That gshock LOL
Wouldnt call myself an enthusiast, i only started this year. Just did research before buying ^^

Most watches, especially SS (brushed or polished or sandblasted, doesn't really matter) will still show signs of wear after a few months/1 year. There's no real doubt about that. If you want to keep your rollie in mint condition, then you can find something else as a "daily beater".
Auto-quartz are mostly found in seikos, meaning that they will display "Kinetic" on the dial. But there are many types of quartz technology at the moment, such as sun-powered (Citizen's Eco-Drive), or kinetics with manual wind (direct drive).
And then there's the Spring Drive which is beyond normal quartz movements. youtube.com/watch?v=FbmKZ5JXyjo
