I also have a major paper due Wednesday and i think im going to write about Julian Assange for it. The paper is about how people label individuals as monsters and what that does for the society as a whole. Assange seems like the perfect topic in the last year for this sort of paper. I cant think of anyone else that has been cast in a poor light quite like he has. Talk about perfect timing, though I don't know if people go so far as to call him a monster.

Over here I only read positive stuff and he is more regarded as a hero of journalism. Besides the rape stuff, but no one believes that here, everyone suspects the CIA or some other intelligence service behind it.

You're right, they call him the leader of a terrorist group instead. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1334112/WikiLeaks-chief-face-criminal-charges-U-S-congressman-says-website-classed-terrorist-organisation.html

Anyway, reminds me of the dialogue Robert Redford had at the end of 'Three Days of the Condor' (appeasement vs. desperation).

Do you prefer a world where things happen behind a curtain and you can continue living your nice safe, middle class life? You don't want to acknowledge that it comes at the cost of maintaining third world shitholes for oil/resources/slave labor so you can continue buying shit. Yeah it would be awful if white people made that realization.

I think this is an interesting thing to bring up. Aside from the stuff about his quirky behavior covered in the NYT, my perception of people's opinions in the US is that he's positively viewed and that the rape allegations are false. Is that the same read other people have from their area/region? Even among older conservative Americans, there's a residual feeling from Daniel Ellsberg/Woodward and the like, so they don't view it as betrayal or treasonous.

I love my country, the freedoms citizenry grants and (most of) the regulations created to protect me. But our foreign affairs are abysmal and ruins the chance of a peaceful world right from the start.

I think he's a douche and innocent before proven guilty. Most people in the US don't know who he is at all and are probably quite amused that US diplomats don't like Canada either.

http://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2010/11/29/Lieberman-WikiLeaks-action-despicable/UPI-79631291032512/ WikiLeaks should be declared a "foreign terrorist organization", says incoming House Homeland Security Committee chairman Rep. Peter King, who wants the Obama administration to "aggressively" go after Assange and WikiLeaks. Likewise Senate Homeland Security Committee chairman, Sen. Joe Lieberman, declares the leak "despicable" and calls for the Obama administration, in collaboration with foreign governments, to "use all legal means necessary to shut down WikiLeaks". Seems like everyone is having their feathers ruffled. Even Palin is getting in on the action.
