some tag4 maps?

I've just realised I've forgot to download one of my favourite maps after i lost them all in reformat, only problem was the song wasn't ranked just approved because its 1400 beats and about 5mins. It was so much fun, had a touhou background which now discribes half of the maps in osu :D

Think it was alice and there were puppets >_<...

Grr i want this song, i can probably S it at my current level.

Could anyone tell me how big the selections are for each genre?

I dont rly like any pop music(more of a power/death/melodic/classic metal kind of guy). When I played EBA on the DS i thought it was awesome(save the music selection.)

Does anyone have any idea if there is a big selection of rock, metal, or classical music on there?

I couldn't say for sure.

Ranked > Rock > 'gives a selection of 362 results' ofc there may be repeat songs just mapped differently

I'd say for those genre's your looking at about 600+ atleast there is a lot of maps.

Its free so who can complain :D

There's a decent amount of songs for every genre. Tons if you play unranked maps.
There's some pretty amazing touhou metal for sure.

I know there's a fairly decent amount of rock and metal, nothing close to video game/anime music obviously but still probably enough to keep you interested for a bit.

Classical not so much, it's very difficult to time properly. The only kinds of classical stuff you might find are things from IIDX that are inspired by classical music but have drums and a solid beat to follow for proper timing.

i.e. songs like these:

I have one of those now, but I guess my problem now is that it's getting so fast that I can't reliably do mouse plus keyboard and I'll have to switch to z/x soon. I really don't want to do that because I started playing this game because it was fun clicking...

Just browsing osu forums randomly and I found this.

http://osu.ppy.sh/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=4280

Does it actually worth something or is it just a waste of time 3 years later? Oh well, w/e.

Still useful for people just starting out trying to transition into harder maps imo

Some of the techniques it's supposed to help "train" you on aren't really used anymore though, like etna sliders

It's not nearly as effective as that post suggests because it was originally intended to be kind of a joke but it does help a little

As far as I can tell this is half joke, half serious. It's been proven that training skills individually leads to faster improvement, and is overall better, but I'm not sure the maps themselves are that good at training those skills (having only played about 1 of them...)

James maps are kinda notorious for being BAD from what I can tell.

There are also metal Touhou remixes and such (while not strictly Touhou, http://osu.ppy.sh/s/33906 comes to mind)

Also, anything by Yousei Teikoku would probably be ok.

Honestly, I can't stand most of the osu music, but I still play because I can ignore bad music if the map is fun.

Also:

First time getting a 100% acc on something, lol. First time EVER. And yes, it's stupidly easy for a hard.

I didn't like the first one. It just felt poorly mapped (which is probably why it's in the graveyard), but holy crap, that second map was fun. Thanks for linking it.

wat

James is a mapping legend, him, DJPop and Al Azif are pretty much the best mappers of the old days :/

Like every mapper he has a few bad maps (like this... http://osu.ppy.sh/s/2201) but I've played most of his stuff and they're all pretty good imo

But I also prefer the older maps far more than the newer maps so maybe you're the opposite o.o

I neglected these maps but thanks Carmail. Very helpful these maps, although I only focused mostly on the first map http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=94258&currentpage=76#1520

Yeah, it may not be much and if I didn't neglect it, i would have improved more in 1 month but I feel slighter more confident in streams. Now, I just need to stay consistent with 300s. Also, switching to keyboard (S/D) with mouse was helpful as well.

As for this, just noticed that I didn't feel that I had to rush with the mouse to aim as much the first time I played it.

Edit: Guess more practice pays off as I noticed that with other maps as well.

No, it's a bunch of old bad maps with techniques that aren't really used anymore. I would just play a bunch of more recent maps.

Al-Azif was the best of the early mappers imo, I've liked almost all of his stuff.

Well, I was basically waiting for someone to correct me :/

And yeah, I much prefer new maps to old ones.... although there are still a ton of new maps that I would consider garbage. Al Azif's maps bother me to no end, as do DJPop's (mostly). I have no idea what it is that bothers me about Al Azif's maps, but whatever it is, it's something subtle, because I would never say they're bad maps (well, I might say that about a few but certainly not all), but something about the way theyre mapped bothers me so much I can't play them (I have downloaded a ton of his stuff). DJPop's maps kinda just feel unusual to me because of the ridiculously linear design he uses for most of them. I don't generally enjoy them, but I guess I wouldn't call too many of them terrible.... But yeah, I do much prefer new style maps to the old ones.

Once again, a stepmania comparison and rant.
+ Show Spoiler +

Ok, so there was a large discussion on the arch0wl.com forums (probably the single most influential community in stepmania's history) about how to design the patterns in a stepfile, what sounds should be stepped, etc. etc. etc. Basically, a gigantic argument about "the right way" to step a song. It boiled down to basically two sides (with of course no agreement on the specifics of either side). One side said that you should step whatever sounds you wanted, as long as it was on time, and made a fun stepfile, and the other side said that you should be consistent in whatever you've chosen to step, and pick patterns that match with what the sound is (something repeating should either be drills (2 repeating arrows) or jackhammers (repeating single notes) unless there's a damn good reason otherwise)

This was early on in the rise of stepmania, although a0 was still well established at that time, there were quite a few stepmakers who didn't come onto the scene until the fallout of that discussion was long over.

Eventually, the second view became accepted as the norm, and resulted in plenty of fun stepfiles that were perfectly on time and meticulously crafted, and by comparison the stepfiles created by the people who just chose to do whatever they wanted basically disappeared. I was playing stemania the whole time that was happening, and found that pretty much every single person could agree that the stefiles created in the "be consistent, and map properly, instead of just mapping with no thought to the patterns or timing" "style" were far better than the previous ones. Timing was much sharper, simfile makers were beginning to use IDM and fast paced electronic music, or metal as their primary genres because the music was more complex and lead to much harder, faster, and complex simfiles.

There are still people who are removed from the scene who create simfiles that aren't created with the same attention to detail and design that the newer stefiles had, and they are basically all far easier than the song should be, far less complex, and far worse, in that they are very inconsistent in what sounds are being stepped, which makes it harder to play, simply because you can't count on a sound always resulting in a step.

I feel that the same thing should happen to osu, and is somewhat in the beginning of it's development. I feel that osu's map making
community is indeed changing, but not as drastically as stepmania's did, and that there are still many remnants of the older style still very much in use in osu's map making community. I also feel that the arbitrary rules about ranking and such are both contributing to the change, and restricting things by placing arbitrary restrictions on what is considered acceptable for ranking.

As an example of osu maps that I feel are very inconsistent in how they maps patterns, and to a lesser extent sounds, would be La Cataline's maps in general. Her sliders, especially, feel like she arbitrarily chose to change their speeds in the middle of a map with no musical reason, which makes them feel awkward and forced. By comparison I feel Aenna/Cyborg's maps are a fairly good example of consistent mapping. They feel like every sound that should be mapped is, and that the patterns don't do things the music doesn't call for. (not necessarily all the maps of either of those mappers fit into this, I just felt that a certain portion of each mapper's maps fit well enough into these two categories that I could use them as examples.)

I think that there are mapping 'fundamentals'. But. Like all forms of creation there will be people who understand the fundamentals and want to improve upon them. So while I do like patterns and clean maps, I believe that there are going to be other good ways to map eventually. But if you make small hit-circles I hate you...

edit: So after reading Rizare's post I was inspired to to play my favorite map again, and first try I managed to be my highest score.

I always get to the fast streams and freak out and fuck up, but I'm ok with that for now. When I get to 800x on any song my hands start shaking....not a very clutch player. Was hanging around 97.4% up until that plunge into the red.

I'm too lazy to write a detailed response to the Stepmania thing but it makes sense and I see what you're talking about.

I think because I was around during 2009 that I have a perspective on (and nostalgia for) the older maps because that's all we had, whereas someone such as yourself who joined more recently obviously prefers the newer maps because they seem more clean and polished compared to the older ones.

The reason I like a lot of the older maps is because a lot of them all feel unique; maps like Agony, Justice to Believe, Boozehound, Red Sign, etc are memorable because they all have certain qualities that make them stand out. To me a lot of the newer maps all use similar patterns, they use these random "mini-jump" spacing changes all over the place that don't really make sense (or the whole map does, like Gold Dust), and the rhythm doesn't really feel right to me sometimes. Eventually they all become kind of blurred together and nothing really sticks out to me, it's just like "oh, that generic anime map with boring patterns #13238479". Or they're just mapped hard for the sake of being hard, with overmapping/overspacing/cranking the difficulty settings way too high, and that's not fun to play either (for me at least).

I have found a few newer maps that I enjoy playing so it's not like they're all bad, there's certain mappers you can always expect good things from, like Natteke/yyy/happy30.

And as a side note I like both La Cataline and Cyborg as mappers lol.
