If I have to sift through garbage maps, ones that just plain suck, I'd be tempted to either just stop playing new maps or to quit, and both options kinda suck. See with Stepmania it was relatively easy to sift through the garbage because good stepfiles were recognized by the community. The other thing was that stepfile packs were created. Usually 1 person or a group of people would get together now and then and come up with a compilation of good stepfiles. http://houkouonchi.net:8080/packs/ for a list of packs released over the years (I'd assume it's also pretty incomplete). There's probably a couple thousand stepfiles in there, not including repeats (I know there are some there).

I've never deleted backgrounds, but I've deleted hit circles to thick you can't see wtf is going on, crappy cursors with poor visibility, etc..

My profile : http://osu.ppy.sh/u/1200505 (i only play osu!, i hate taiko and i'm bad with catch the beat) TL name : Nyarly Osu! name : Nyarly I stream some games from time to time. I tend to ragequit a lot, i'm always aiming for perfect, SS, S, or minimum A :p But i'm not playing for the ranks, only to make high scores for my ego ^^ I'm going to train on the tl maps to see if i can rival the bests tlers..

I don't know how the ranking system works, is it really worth it to complete a map if you did a bad score ? The only stat I pay attention to is my accuracy and i'm afraid if i complete a map with like 70% accuracy I will lose ranks (and overall accuracy percentage). Isn't that how it works ? When i complete a map with an inferior score than the last time i did it, I only see "-X places" and red stuff everywhere :/

When i complete a map with an inferior score than the last time i did it, I only see "-X places" and red stuff everywhere :/ Your ranked score is the sum of highest scores from different beatmaps. Your total score comes from every single attempt, pass or fail, even if you play the same beatmap 1000 times (which some people do). Your performance points increase as you play more. Your accuracy (82%) is still pretty low, my accuracy is 98% (although I'm farming accuracy).. When you get better at playing osu!, you can easily redo the older beatmaps and get better scores. As you keep playing, you will improve. I have over 6000 plays (I think it doesn't count retries), while some veterans have tens or even hundreds of thousands of plays. Don't care about the score that you get now; you can fix that when you get better. Also most people put accuracy as their least priority. Ranked score and performance points are more important.

One thing I've noticed is that I haven't seen anyone discuss "flow" or "being in the zone" when talking about osu. When I play, that is my goal, more than anything else. If I can find a map that challenges me enough to bring me to the zone, I'm happy. That's what I play osu to achieve. Now, just to be clear, I'll link to wikpedia's article on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_(psychology) because that is what I'm talking about. An excerpt: "Flow is the mental state of operation in which a person in an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity." As long as I reach flow, my time spent playing osu has been as fulfilling as it will get. Anything at all that gets in the way of reaching that state is something that I want to remove. This is the ultimate "I play osu for fun, and no other reason". Everything else is secondary, and if I were completely unable to achieve a state of flow with osu, I would stop playing. It's why I still don't play stepmania.

Thank you for the explanation ! That's a good system imo, it makes us want to play more, not like starcraft2 where you can be afraid of losing and falling down. I like that. Btw my 82% accuracy is for taiko, and it should be even lower, i just spam random keys on taiko, i don't get this mode .. I'm at 98.36% on "normal" mode ^^ I'm going to play a lot more when i recieve my new pc, i promise :p Osu lags on this one.. i didn't think it would be possible for osu to lag but .. And i agree with the post above me. The only maps i enjoy playing on are those that are challenging enough so you have to be focused but not too hard so it's still possible to finish it with a perfect score (if you're really focused). http://osu.ppy.sh/b/66728 Jonathan Coulton & GLaDOS - Still Alive [Normal] <= this map is perfect for me ![]() http://osu.ppy.sh/b/32673 Michael Land - Monkey Island Opening Theme [Easy] <= I love this one too, i did like 15 runs at 100% until one goddamn pattern with a different timing that makes me fail everytime ...
