Drakes? Underrated?
I am not following....
Those things were often the single most annoying ship to deal with in the entire damn game. What other ship can completely lock down my Raven with just a few taps of a button?
A drake can and not much else.
Good thing I have a missile set up just to pop those stupid things.

what are the actual requirement for joining liquid corp? I'm about half way through my learning skills and really keen to get into some pvp action with you guys, what do I need to train when I finish?

Within the next days we're going to move to the 0.0 space the alliance is based in and start kicking the shit out of other peoples backyards. Roaming gangs 23/7. This also means that we have to upgrade recruitment minimum for guys from TL to not make them be lost in 0.0 from the start.
New requirements will be: -Basic (x1) and advanced learnings (x3) to IV (no need for charisma skill here) -Hull Upgrades IV -High Speed Maneuvering III -Propulsion Jamming III -Racial Frigate Skill to IV (NOT depending on which race your character was at the start)
These skills should take about 2 weeks total. Sign up before you want to play (also PM ppl posting in here from the corp for 21 day trials, helps both you and us)
Some random crap which makes you do okay in the racial frig of your choice (e.g. to fit nos / small armor repper on a rifter)
We will still help you out in the ingame channel #teamliquid and pick you up from there, also help out with isk, general tips etc. etc. ...
Those skills will let you fly a cheap disposible tackler and get in on the action. After this it really depends on what race ships you want to fly. All races are capable of operating at all stages of the game, although some may be better at things than others. The important thing to know is that its possible to skill any race, so you can change your mind later, but early on (first 10 mil sp or so) its best to specialize. I'll give you my personal opinions on them:
Amarr- Amarr probably have the best later game ships for PvP, namely Battleships. This is because lasers are currently awesome, but (fingers crossed) things that are awesome have a tendency to be 'fixed'.
Minmatar- These guys have the best early ship (rifter) and have very good medium ships up to about battle cruiser. Their battleships are a bit sub-par.
Caldari- Caldari probably aren't recommended for PvP. Their ships are gods of the PvE universe, but are a bit lacking against other players. However this can lead to you being underestimated, like people are talking about above. They have good ECM ships though.
Gallente- The Gallente are, in my opinion, probably the most well-rounded race. They have some of the best ships across the board, and droneboats make excellent AFK-missioners for PvE. However it's a bit skill intensive to get the most out of some of their ships, as you can need drones and guns. This race is my favourite. Plus, all the ships are named after gods. You can't beat that.
Pick a race and grab some advice from someone who flys it after youre done the basic skills, we can all give you some fairly good advice.

Cool, I'm currently piloting a shield tanked rifter for PvE (started minmatar). Should take me a few more days yet to get the learning skills done but then it won't take long to get the rest of the reqs, so keen to come roaming with you guys

What would you fit on an AF?
200mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I = 525 Armor (+13'750 weight penalty). Small Armor Repair II = Should repair about 15-17 Armor/sec with my skills (and lower Grid usage).
Means: About 30-40 seconds of repairing would make the SAR better and there is the weight penalty which I really don't like on an AF. Cap stability shouldn't be an Issue (SAR just means I fit NOS, no SAR means I fit a Neut).
I actually don't know if I have the cpu to fit a SAR but well, that could be solved .

Back in the day (like 2006) when I was completely new, BOS basically said "regardless of whatever you train later, train up for a rifter". While today the kind of frigate you fly is even more irrelevant than it was in 2006 for big fleet battles, rifters are still an excellent ship to train up for.
Those things were often the single most annoying ship to deal with in the entire damn game. What other ship can completely lock down my Raven with just a few taps of a button?
A lot of things actually, depending on how your raven is set up.
What would you fit on an AF?
Depends on what you're trying to do with your AF and what kind of AF it is. Also, SAR takes less CPU than a 200mm plate.

The fit goes like this (out of my head, but should be accurate):
Retribution (for fleet/ratting 0.0): 4 x dual light pulse laser II 1 x Neut or Nos
1 x 1mn MWD II
1 x Heat Sink II 1 x DCU II 2 x Adaptive Nano Membrane II 1 x 200m RRT Plate or SAR II (for ratting a SAR is obviously needed)
1 x collision rig (dmg) 1 x burst rig (rof)
(thx to Vil for much of this)

As long as we're talking about fittings I was kinda sad yesterday when I realizes that a person had beaten me to the ultimate cyclone fit. Notice how his rigs interact with his high slots and how he can deal all 4 types of dmg! Faction PDU is necessary btw.

wtf is this...
Laser-Arty-Missile-Shieldbuffer-Armorrep-Cyclone... You'll never know what hit you when it comes after you... Probably most people flee because they think they get focussed by 3-4 guys at once :p

Im a few days into EVE and im enjoying it hugely, I started as Caldari and am flying a Kestral. Would it be wise to train for a rifter or should i just carry on the caldari path?

I really should stop reading this thread, makes me itch to play EVE again everytime I do.
And yeah, the Drake was soooo good when I still played. People always expected some kind of stupide passive shield regen setup with no dps. And then you got in their face and raped them hard with faction HAMs and a massive extender+rig-based shield buffer. Also javelin reached 90km+ iirc - heard it has been nerfed since. Good times. Such an awesome game.
Most probably the best MMO I ever played when it comes to metagame. You can spend so much time just brainstorming about fittings, gang setups, and tactics. Even better than DAoC teamplay. Too bad the actual ingame experience wasn't always up to par for various reasons.

On another note, i finally downloaded EVEMon, and set up a training play for all the skills i need to reach the reqs of the corp, tells me 15 days, which i guess is not too bad. Now time to mission run to get the money to buy the skill books.

I know fitted 4 of these with SAR II's/Nos but still don't know if a plate would be better... :/. But it can kill Angel BS... Just takes a little time .
