As of now I'm not interested in joining the EVE community even thought it seems like it's awesome. But what I would like, is if someone would take their time to find some - in the EVE universe really awesome youtube videos and write a little description about what's going on, what to look for and what makes this clip really cool. Really hope someone will help me out :-)

I tried to browse some videos on youtube but to be honest I don't really have any idea about what I'm looking at or what I'm looking for. As of now I'm not interested in joining the EVE community even thought it seems like it's awesome. But what I would like, is if someone would take their time to find some - in the EVE universe really awesome youtube videos and write a little description about what's going on, what to look for and what makes this clip really cool. Really hope someone will help me out :-) I would say that spending even a couple of hours exploring EVE on a trial account would make a lot of those videos more comprehensible. EVE's UI is very information-rich, and since most of the video out there is from the player's point of view, knowing what the UI shows is a helpful skill for following a video. A few key points: Generally, purple brackets in space indicate ships in one's own fleet. Red, yellow, orange, or blank brackets are ships not in the current fleet, generally neutral or unfriendly. Blue or green brackets are generally friendly ships. (All of these choices are editable, but these conventions are the default and very common.) Ships that are nearby in space appear in a window called the overview (frequently, but not always, in the upper right), which is a list that can be sorted by distance, pilot name, ship type, or other parameters. Often, players use the overview window to select targets, since clicking on the small brackets in space can be difficult, particularly if they're moving at any appreciable speed. When a ship is targeted, a picture of the ship type surrounded by three concentric circles appears on screen, often in the upper right next to the overview. The outer circle represents shields, the middle circle represents armor, and the inner circle represents structure. Once shields are gone, armor takes damage, and once armor is gone, structure takes damage (That statement is a little oversimplified, but it's pretty close). When structure gets to zero, the ship explodes, dumping the pilot in a capsule, or "pod," into space. Sometimes, the pilot can escape in their pod. Otherwise, if their pod is killed, another of their clones is activated in their home station, which might be far away. So, normally when watching a fight in a video, I'll look at the brackets in space to see where things are in relation to each other, at the overview to see how many ships are on field (note that many players will hide friendly ships on the overview for easier targeting of hostiles), and at the targets' health circles to see how the fleet is doing killing their current target. I've always thought that Rooks and Kings made very watchable videos. Here's one of my favorite: + Show Spoiler + Some terminology used in the video: "Pipe bombing" is a technique in which an enemy fleet is tricked into warping into a "bubble," which is one of a few kinds of spherical zones that prevent ships inside from warping away, and is then bombed, in this video's case using "smart bombs," or area-of-effect weapons whose areas of effect are centered on the activating ships. "Titans" are the physically largest ship type in EVE, which have the capability to "bridge" smaller ships, or allow them to jump instantly from one system to a beacon in another. The beacon is called a "cynosural field" or "cyno." Finally, the towers being talked about are the central structure in a player owned starbase, or POS, which when fully activated has a shield that (very superficially) looks like a warp disruption bubble, but prevents aggression inside, permits warping out, keeps out enemy ships, and protects ships within its boundary. It's quite difficult for an outsider who doesn't understand the meaning of the interface or the "feel" of the grid and the overview to understand all the things that are happening. In fact, I'd say that most of the people that play EVE don't really understand what's happening in a Willl Adama or similar video because their knowledge of the game mechanics is just as far behind Willl's as yours is behind the average person who makes an EVE video..

Absolutely. I've played this game for three years, and have always felt like my knowledge was improving, however slowly, but it took sitting in on some tournament practice sessions with a decent team to open my eyes to how much more subtle and complicated the game can get, and how poorly I really understand it. Unfortunately, the tools for correcting that lack of understanding aren't widely available, but I'd say one could do a lot worse than to run with the TL crowd, if one can handle their relentless hazing. ![]()
