Games aren't bad because your computer and internet are shitty. I hate reading reviews like that. Totally discredits the developer's efforts into making a game because some jackass is playing under the minimum requirements (theres a reason they exist). Can't stand it when someone reviews a modern game when playing on a modem and Windows 98.
More to the point, SWTOR has been a fantastic experience. I can get quickly bored playing MMOs and while, yeah, the quests are repetitive, you get that in any MMO, even precious WoW (ESPECIALLY FUCKING WOW). While the worlds feels slightly too linear for me, overall the game is excellent. Cinematic quest intros are a nice way of breaking up reading quest after quest, a lot of the small things other MMOs never got right are there (leveling zones with level requirements under them, leveling on PURE quests, rewards are worthwhile, drops aren't total shit, very few bugs, talent specs being more diverse than tree 1 2 or 3 and many more).
The story line also provides Bioware with a lot of material to cover. Not only do you have good vs. evil instead of definite good vs misunderstood evil (HORDE), it provides different worlds, different people and a whole lot more meaning than inventing lore on the fly. What they'll need to do is open the world up a little more and provide some large scale raids (max I've seen are 6 man dungeons at level 21) to make it more appealing.
PvP is ok. It wasnt nearly as bad as people were complaining about when I played it, but that may have more to do with my class (Guardian) than the actual gameplay. And honestly, it felt a lot like battlegrounds in WoW (was rogue and paladin).
I'm still going to buy it (massive Star Wars fan, gotta roll Jedi), but I doubt it'll get even close to 13 million subs just because its a Star Wars game. I invited a friend to the beta who only barely knew of Star Wars (ie, not enough to buy it just cause its Star Wars) and hes talking to me right now about how much he likes it.
I haven't crashed once, but did have some launcher problems earlier that were solved by restarting my computer. Friend has disconnected three times so far.

You're making the same cop-out that you are discrediting us for. You make the assumption that everyone who has had performance issues must just have a shitty computer, or uses some third world internet connection at 5kbs or "players on Windows 98". Not only is that textbook strawman, but that is just ignorant. Perhaps not everyone is hit just as hard as the next, but the issue is very real -- this game has performance issues.
And to quote myself, just to be a massive douche ( )

P.S. 2.0 - There are hundreds of complaints on other forums and official reviewers and shit complaining about the same framerate and performance issues.

I just wanted to say that on the lag/performance front I have had no hiccups at all, maybe like once an hour i hit a 10 second lag spike, but thats better than normal WoW for me. I do have great internet, but a trash computer and I've really had no problems at all.
And to those who have had lag problems or w/e, I believe that is the point of this weekend, to stress the servers and test how everything works/fix the things that don't work.
That being said if people don't like the game, they just don't like it and thats cool, but I am impressed with it and I will be playing at launch!

Played my bountyhunter merc to level 12 today and I think it was pretty fun. I don't know if the game still is fun after the first chunk of class quests but so far it was a great experience.
The problem for me is, that I'm a PvP guy and don't care about PvE at all so at the end of the day I'll probably buy the game, play the first free month and quit after that because the PvP doesn't look to good.
e: I forgot one of the little thing that I really loved, it's subtle but the regen spell that you get is a really nice idea because you don't have to bother buying water and stuff.

Yes, the intention of my, and everyone else's, erm "whining" is not to start a fuss. It's to bring attention to a common issue so that it may be fixed. I may not particularly like this game, but I'd rather people make an intelligent decision of their liking this game and not base it off of a shitty performance their first time playing with lots of people around. I would also like others to have fun. It's just INCREDIBLY ignorant to say everyone having performance issues uses Windows 98, dial up, and all that other crap.
Plus, I like correcting people when they make stupid general statements
I do hope you have fun with the game at launch, then!

Ya, PvP is kind of choppy, at least thats my biggest problem with the animations.

I use an ATI 4850 personally, runs like a damn charm with my low native resolution and DX10.

I never said that everyone who has complained has worthless computers. I realize that the game IS buggy. But it just so happens that there ARE people who DO post about issues who DO have garbage rigs and internet and use this as an excuse to blast a game that is actually quite good (how about that?!). If you noticed, I also wrote had some problems with the launcher, which required some tinkering and a restart. I didn't bash the game because of it, like I've seen in several of the posts I've read and tried my best to give a fair review.
I had hoped that there weren't any white knights roaming the internetz today so I wouldn't be misinterpreted, but I was wrong.
OH, as for hardware, I'm rocking a GTX560 Ti, AMD 965 processor and 10 (LOL) GB of RAM. My Internet speed maxes at 600 KBPS however. The friends I'm playing with both have mid tier processors (but still quad cores) and mid tier ATI cards (both 4000 series) and combined, we have three disconnects and a couple incidents of framerate lag. Maybe it the servers? I'm on Infinity Gate, atm.

I just have to pipe in here to all those who are equating the game to shit because of performance issues. Ignore those people. This is completely irrelevant. I was in beta for several months and performance issues have gotten better exponentially and will be (no doubt) fine for launch.
That doesn't mean I like this game - in fact, I think it's boring and have stopped playing it. It was my only hope for Star Wars after having loved many games of franchise past and seeing so many Lucas Arts games fail modern-day. The game is bad in my opinion, but please don't pretend like technical issues during the Beta have anything to do with the game at this stage. They don't. Even if you're frustrated beyond belief.

Sorry it didn't meet your expectations! I've been pretty hyped for this game since it was announced(been a decent fan of MMOs and a huge fan KOTOR). I've only played a few classes so far( and only to 15), but im really enjoying it, hoping it doesn't get stale for me very fast. It just seems to have like the same kind of "magic"(gay i know) that WoW had for me the first time I played it. The kind of feeling that can ACTUALLY make me enjoy killing boars and shit for stupid quests, but now so much more intriguing in SWTOR lol.

For what it's worth, I was playing on max for 8 hours straight today. The only issue I had was a crash around the 8 hour mark. Compared to every other new game I've played on my rather robust system, it is quite stable.
On the gameplay aspect side, I find it comparable to every other big MMO title. The voice acting is nice, but I'm skipping through most of it anyways. I play MMOs for the character improvement based on effort, and so far, this fits the bill. There isn't a huge learning curve, and it isn't as easy as many of these people claim. Sure, there are aspects which speed up the process, like the quest markers and companion, but there are definitely encounters which would be impossible without the companion. At the same time, there are encounters you or your companion could solo. It creates a good platform for learning the game.
PVP is always an aside. After all, this is a content driven MMO. I haven't tried the PVP yet, but as long as it isn't completely unplayable, it will be fine.
|
Im having no performance or lag issues at all. Game is running pretty much butter smooth. And im playing from Japan.
Dont know how i feel about the game right now though. It feels so weird to actually be following somewhat of a story line while playing a mmo. I'll prolly get a better idea once i get out of the beginner area and the world opens up a lil bit.
|
Played for about a hour and got to lvl3... lol, pretty cool game, it will do good. Not sure if it will beat WoW...
Right now I just don't have time to play any MMO.
|
Really have a tough time deciding whether to get or not. I loved all the kotor games, played em forever, but I don't really have the time or energy to play a big mmo like this seems to be. In the winter I work from 1 AM - 4 PM ish and don't really wanna play any games besides Skyrim after I've slept, ate, and all that shit. I really just want Battlefront 3...

Well for pve if you dont bother from the average graphics andsome animation glitches might be ok ( also not be annoying of how incredible job they did , copying every aspect of wow).
For starters , i play from an i7 - 970 , A gtx 480 , and 8 gb ram with a conection of 24mb ( i download real 2,5 mb per second)
In pve areas as sage i didnt experiencem uch lag , on the empire side as sorc sometimes but no biggy.
In Warzones the latency was up to 2-3 seconds delay making it unplayable.
From a competitive pvp aspect the game is shit and total unbalance.
As an competive pvp player in every mmo (in warhammer as well and having 2 rank 80 healers - warpriest - shaman) the game makes the very same mistakes.
Too much dps from the "light tank " archetypes mythic loves to have since daoc. Marauders, sentinels are sick , this time the ae damage seems to be low or non existent ( at least till 30ish) but the single one reminds me of pre nerf slayers 2 shoting everyone in warhammer.
I compare this with warhammer cause the mechanics are identical since mythic is behind the pvp as well. Same energy usage for healers and so on. Tbh nothing changed for the better , they using the same mirror classes , same abilities they have in warhammer more or less.
The only thing missing is detaunts , thus lowering the survivability of healers - soft targets even more.
They really havent recognise the mistakes they did and tried to improve anything , which isnt a suprise considering how low the pvp was in their lists.
Several years in development - even now- and they havent release one pvp trailer , its all about the full voice story none cares about cause usually players listen to music or things like that for starters when playing ;p
The game also is laughably easy , u can afk and let companion farming with macros after relase.
It doesnt promote players to cooperate at all twice ive tried save before a hard encounter and twice to load after wipes ;p
I guess some will like it but fanboyism aside , it feels lacking in every aspect and severe outdated
ps sith assisins are even more ridiculus thats why everyone plays them.
They have both strong melee dps and range + stuns and disable... talk about balance it can be played oth as a light tank or an assassin in pvp.

I will give this game one thing though, listening to dialogue is much better and, erm, "immersive" than reading walls of quest text. I just feel it's in this identity crisis between a singleplayer RPG and an MMORPG, with companions and shit like that. If anything that makes the game make people not want to play with others even more.
|
Dialogue began to piss me off after a while in closed beta. Yeah it was cool and all at first, and it's definitely impressive and ambitious, but i feel like it was a waste of time and resources that they could have put into something else. I just began skipping over all of it after a while. I dont really care what people have to say when it usually involves me just having to go on some mundane task for them.

Yeah, story is nice when it's meaningful, but here it's just used as a thinly veiled excuse for putting you to work doing the typical kill 10 wolves, fetch items, etc, quests.
This is from my limited beta experience, mind. I'm sure the story aspect goes deeper, but still, it just feels so hollow to me.
