Played on and off all day today (while watching sc2 of course), some thoughts... Played as a Jedi Consular, got to 11 so far:
Pros:
1. I was more focused on the story than the leveling. I'm not a huge story fan but if it's told right, I'll listen and enjoy (bioshock, skyrim, dragon age 1, etc I've enjoyed a lot story-line wise). The Jedi Consular storyline was fun enough to really be able to get into it. I felt like I was playing a single player quality game in a multiplayer world, and that was new to me (and a good thing IMO, but I'm not hugely social in MMOs typically).
2. The skill set I got to use for the first 11 levels so far has been a lot of fun. Ripping something out of the ground, tossing it at a mob, and rushing up to slash it in the face with a lightsaber is fun for me, along with an aoe damaging push and some other fun toys to play with (just got stealth, haven't done much pve with it yet, but hopefully fun).
3. Bioware style choices. I like conversation choices. They didn't seem to have the hugest impact but at least they were there. I gained a sense of personality from my character from them. One time I choose something accidentally and it totally threw it out of wack because it just didn't sound like who my character was anymore. I like that.
4. Solid networking. There was some lag right at the beginning with everyone in the same zone, but soon enough, it was mostly lag free for me, even with seeing a lot of people coming and going.
5. Polish. Reminds me of WoW beta. Felt polished, but doesn't compare to today's standards WoW has set (not that any new mmo ever will). I think it feels a bit more polished than Rift did in beta. I'm confident if they get a good subscriber base it'll become extremely well polished.
6. Crafting. This part kind of blew me away. I'm not a huge crafter, but the idea of letting your followers go out and do stuff for you, then they get back and you can craft things with what they found... love it. Gotta get up and go afk for a few? Send your followers out, they might be back by the time you get back. I was able to turn my lightsaber from green to blue with some blue rocks my follower found me. Might not be great for the hardcore crafters but for me it was a perfect solution.
Cons:
1. PvP. I don't know if there are other modes but I played a round of this "soccer-like" pvp. I consider myself a PvPer in that I always lean towards PvPing over PvEing when I can. This was a HUGE disappointment for me. I thought it was pretty terrible. I hope I just haven't gotten a chance to play some hidden good pvp mode but this one was terrible.
2. Graphics. If they release higher res textures, this complaint will go away 100%. Everything besides the textures is pretty nice, especially for mmo standards. The textures though feel like late ps2 / early 360/ps3. Maybe the wii would rival them. It's hard to get immersed in a game wish such visually poor textures when you've been playing the likes of skyrim maxed on a PC.
3. Bugs. Beta beta. Hope they're all squashed. The mouse sensitivity can't be changed it seems. I even found the ini file and tried to change it there, nothing. It's super high for me when holding right/left click and turning, but correct when just moving the mouse around, so I can't just lower the sensitivity of my mouse or i'll throw off my sc2 game. Big complaint here but I'll assume it'll be fixed.
4. In game community. I hope this fixes itself quickly. I know beta brings out the worst people but at least in the Rift beta people weren't WoW-bad. Lots of kiddies and trolls spamming chat here. I'm afraid the game will be fun/accessible enough to keep them around
5. Atmosphere. Most places have been pretty awesome. A few had uninspired music constantly playing... like in New Hope where Luke steps into that bar for the first time (been a while since I saw it, going on memory)... there's this silly/cool sounding music that sets the tone for it being a rough bounty hunter type bar. Well, they tried to replicate that in a few different places I've been too, and it feels uninspired and annoying. Loved it in the movie, hate it here.
Anyway, going to try out bounty hunter tomorrow and maybe some other class.

God I am enjoying this game way to much as the sith warrior. I can't imagine how epic the jedi knight quests will be (that will be my main once the game is out). I honestly see myself doing jedi knight first then a sith warrior :D.
After actually being able to play the beta (last weekend skyrim and work) my excitement is high :D

Only reminded me how i hate the conversation wheel and having my character voiced-over. Also the game feels pretty 'free to play'-ish to me, rather then game for 59$ + 15$/month. I like how you can sometimes choose how to do quest and whether to be bitch or good guy though. Can I ask why you hate having you character voiced over ? This seems really strange for me but I will love to hear why you don't like it. For me, at least, as I share the same qualm, is that it ruins all sense of immersion. Having some guy voice what my guy sounds like and shit like that. Not only does it ruin immersion in a story based game, it also reduces resources in actual storytelling.
Yeah, this is pretty much my reasons for disliking having my character voiced over...also, someone compared having scroll wheel vs wow-like text. And yeah, i agree that what swtor does is slightly better, but i still find myself 'spacebaring' through the dialogues...the dialogues are just too long and, honestly, pretty cheese to me...it's kinda weird, because i really fucking loved dialogues in Dragon Age and i spent probably most of the time in camp talking with characters...but the ones in Dragon age 2 and swtor i trully hate
That said, im gonna try a ranged class now, maybe it will be better (tried sith inqusitor to 11 and jedni knight to 5 so far)

World of Warcraft clone OMG lol. Seriously nothing original otehr then light and darkside points that will allow for certain gear (that I expect to just look different rather then BE different. Otherwise its gonna cause people to gind light or dark depending on gear to min/max)

Guild Wars 2 is going to be the more evolutionary MMO to look forward to.

You pick up a lightsaber, hold it high like Excelsior, some random big guy at the bottom of a staircase throws a rock at you, you turn around and go back into the game, buff up, walk down the staircase, hit him 3 times, he dies, and you move on.
It as really the most anti-climactic thing out there.
I personally, if I had to choose, liked Sith Inquisitor the most. At least the Lightsaber thing for it felt legitimately frantic when I got it. That and Force Lightning...ing people was amazing.

I ate everything up about the videos and interviews etc etc. But the game is just boring as it is right now.
Totally agree, I really wanted to like this game. Ive been obsessed with stars since I saw the first one., but after a few hours yesterday I felt bored to tears. Always doing quests that don't change the world. Kill 20 of these, pick up 5 of those. You are babied through everything, i mean the fucking quest thing shows up on the map. Theres just little meaning to what you do. I know this will change when u reach end game content. But I dont want to put 150 bored hours to get there. Why cant someone make a Different MMO?
I would give anything for a modern Asherons Call game style. That was definately the BW of MMO's.
There are a few pros of the game tho, the voice thing is better than WoW's piles of texts, the classes are unique, andd most important of all(the only reason im trying the beta...........) Its fucking star wars!

I tried it and I really wanted it to blow me away, and I went into this game with an open mind and literally no knowledge of how anything worked. However, I have never seen a game have an identity crisis like this one. I was playing WoW then I was playing Mass Effect, then I was back to WoW. I didn't get really far into it - only like half an hour because I was having frame rate issues and it pissed me off. I am going to try it again later just to get farther into it, but from what I played it just felt like a lesser WoW. Nothing wrong with that, but I really feel like there is no reason to play this over WoW unless your a huge Star Wars fan. Guess I will just have to wait for Guild Wars for my next MMO.
Edit: I really did like their use of phasing though. It allowed for a single player environment in a multiplayer game which I felt was really cool. I can tell this is a really story driven game, which I feel just doesn't really fit into an MMO. I'm more intrested in leveling my character and min/maxing my stats than developing my characters personality.

Sounds really nice Anyone got a beta key for me? Maybe someone who does not wanna continue playing because he does not like it? that would be awesome!

this is the second beta I'm in. I was really, really impressed with the first beta. Soloed through the entire Jedi starting area, and enjoyed the quests way more than I ever have in WOW or Rift or whatever... as an actual game it wasn't anything special, but as a story it felt like a Bioware game
Yesterday I played a bit with my sister, and the game really does not work as a multiplayer experience. When entering conversations, you're stuck waiting for the other person to load/catch up, the dialogues don't address that there are more people participating which leads to a disconnected feeling. And worst of all is the single player instances, which breaks up the group and destroys the suspension of disbelief.
I'll probably buy it and play through the story at some point, but it's a massive shame that the game simply isn't KOTOR 3. It would've been a much better game, because as far as I can tell, the basic multiplayer experience at best isn't interesting, and at worst it straight up does not work

^---Ya thats true, but why do I constantly need to go through a god damn menu to let other people into my instance....
There are a lot of good things that I love about this game and there are a lot of bad things, I think this is going to be one I pick up either release day or just wait and "get" it on xmas just to see if they smoothed out the bugs. Its decent, the world while small still leaves a decent amount to explore. The leveling system doesn't take long, but the fact that there are only "just" enough quests for you to do in a single area leads you to have to either run around trying to find that last quest you missed or just go grind it out.
I was an idiot and wasted 5 hours on 1 character yesterday only to get a crash to desktop, went to log back in and it had a 5 hour + wait limit T.T so I had to restart another character on a less populated server and Im at like lvl 15 now (got my starship at 13 go me =D) however Ive run out of quests and I'm just kinda instancing/grinding random things to get my next few levels so I can continue my class quests. Also the space combat is a bit disappointing comparatively to the way I saw it in the video. Its a "rail" system where you fly a pre-set path, which is ok, except when it keeps flying you over stuff you already killed and you only have xxx amount of time to finish the mission.

Seems like im in the minority here in this thread, but I'm really enjoying the game. Got to level 14 on a Jedi sage(healer) last night and had a blast, gonna try another class today see what I like more. I don't think theres ever been a MMO with this much content at launch, and it has pretty incredible polish imo.

yes, but why would they want to? There's very little benefit for them from doing so

Been in beta for a couple months now. Was really impressed when I first started to play, but noticed myself playing it less and less. Why?
I've come to the conclusion that it's just gotten boring. It's not immersive for me, everything is very linear and to be honest, it just doesn't look good graphically. I'm not attached to my character and I don't feel unique at all. There are some cool and well-done things with this game. But to be honest, if they were going to make it so similar to WoW, they at least needed to offer some freedom of character and progression. Sigh, it could have been such a great game. Oh well! Not gonna subscribe or buy it myself at this point.
Looking forward to see what they do with expansions though.

played it for 3h so far.. its quite fun but very similar to WoW. i will play the beta a bit further, but atm im pretty sure that i wont buy the game. especially because D3 comes out a few months later and at that point, id stop playing starwars anyway

Yup my thoughts to . Sucks most people in this thread don't enjoy it but w/e wont' affect me, just can't wait for the release :D

lol I don't care if getting a lightsaber isn't the most climactic thing ever that is the least of my concerns if getting my lightsaber as a jedi knight is anti ^^.

is there a friend invite code available for players who already got in?

Thinking the same thing, it should be KOTOR 3.

But the game is still great, I'd totally tap it.
