I'll give my opinions on the games I've played.
FF III/VI:
It was an awesome game, excellent soundtrack, interesting story, good gameplay. Best main villain in any game ever. The gameplay was good as well, the random battles weren't too tedious either. It's definitely one of the best FF's, if not the best one. Too bad that some people concentrate on the graphics way too much...
FF VII:
An excellent game as well. The soundtrack is excellent, although not quite as good as FF VIII's in my opinion. There's some jewels like Jenova and One Winged Angel, though. I think this soundtrack has the best slow songs. I found the story really interesting, although it wasn't perfect and was really weird/confusing at times. Sephiroth is a really cool character, my favorite in the game.
The Materia system is awesome and that's what makes the game really good and replayable. I personally love messing with the materia. The Weapons are also interesting, and there's a lot of things that make this probably the best FF ever made. The graphics were great as well.
FF VIII:
This game, in my opinion, has the best soundtrack ever made for a game. The intro song is awesome, and the boss battle theme is my favorite game music track ever. Other boss battle themes kick ass as well, as do many other songs. The junction and GF system are good and interesting. The story feels good, but this game has some huge flaws.
There are some extremely tedious parts in the game, some really slow-paced dumb missions, or just really slow story-processing parts where I almost fall asleep and just wish it would end. The game doesn't want you to level, in fact if you level the bosses get a lot stronger, so it's a good idea to not level at all. Then you have to use the CARD command to level your GF's, and that's tedious as well.
The card game is possibly the best thing about this game, and this game is likely the best FF for "powergaming", since you can early level Seifer to lvl 68 or so and have all your GFs be lvl 100 when your other characters are at their beginning levels. The card game allows you to get cards and turn them into great junction spells really early in the game, turning your characters into an unstoppable force very early. That's the part about this game I like the most.
But it's just too tedious. I've tried playing through the game 4 times now, and every time I get bored to death before the last disc. The game just progresses too slowly and it's way too slow-paced. But I'm still happy that this game was made, since it has many of my favorite game musics.
FF XII:
Currently playing through this, and it's... garbage. Just running around ONE single place for... well, 30 hours or so already. Killing monsters randomly for no reason whatsoever with a crappy story. You don't even have to do anything but run around. The soundcrap... I mean, soundtrack is complete garbage, there's not a single good song come accross yet. The monster hunting stuff is really boring as well. This game reminds me of a cheap Baldurs Gate clone more than FF XII; Mindless hack and slash running around without much of a storyline. This game doesn't really deserve to be called FF.....

FF7, FFT, FF4, and FF5 were my favorites.
I liked 6, and 10.

final fantasy got killed and body snatched after 9 fuck roman shit lol
|
1. FFVI 2. FFXII 3. FFV 4. FFX 5. FFIX
Additionally FFT was awesome even though it wasn't an actual FF story (Just had FF elements thrown into it), and I still play FFXI (The online one). I had lost a lot of faith in it and quit, but recently they added a level sync system and since they added that back, tons of players returned to it, most of which quit WoW to play FFXI now because it offers something that WoW doesn't.

As I said, after seven the series is pretty much "downhill" and then people say "but you're comparing it to a completely amazing game, of course they're not going to live up to it!" There's a difference between not living up to previous titles and not coming anywhere close. 6 and 7 took me forever to complete because I was completely enthralled by them and wanted to do every little subquest, etc. that I could. 8, 9, and 10 took me forever to complete because I just didn't want to play them. There just wasn't the immersion factor that previous titles had. In 7, it was fun for me going around getting the higher level materia and such, it really pulled me in; the characters, story, everything. After that, getting all the higher level stuff felt more like a chore since I just couldn't bring myself to care about the atmosphere of the game.
It seems that Square is stuck in a time warp, and has to keep placing out the same game with some graphical updates and minor gameplay tweaks. When's the last time there's been a major rehaul of the combat engine in a Final Fantasy game (outside of Tactics)? I get it, the combat system is tried and true, it works pretty well for what it is, but when you have a game where the point is to log in many, many hours to beat it following the same combat engine throughout, then span that over a dozen games, it gets pretty same-y. Part of it is that the combat engine in and of it self doesn't leave a lot of room for innovation. Sure, you can change some things, but you can't really make a Final Fantasy type combat engine without swapping around some fundamentals of it and end up with combat like you do in games such as Starcraft. Granted, SC is a completely different type of game, but the completely real time combat engine it uses has plenty of room for updates without changing the core of it. Look at the depth of micro in and of itself. Strictly turn based combat just can't offer anything near that. Sure you've got buffs, but that doesn't add the same level of complexity.
Basically, micro is much more of an art, where each move you do has a certain freedom to it, whereas everything you do in a strictly turn based game can be boiled down to a hard science. Sure, some people like being able to break it down to the point where every little variable is accounted for, but that only leads to flat-out boring battles where nothing unexpected really occurs.
[EDIT] Part of the reason I'm critical on the Final Fantasy series is because it is a series. Instead of the games being standalone because of there being no link between the games, they've all got a Final Fantasy label on them. Look at a game like Chrono Trigger. It could very easily have the Final Fantasy tag on it and would completely fit in with the current criteria to be in the Final Fantasy crowd. Likewise, FFVII could very easily have been called something different and it still would be fine as it's own game. To me, it just seems the only reason games get labeled Final Fantasy is because Square has such a frenzied fanbase around the title. Any game whose name is prefixed by "Final Fantasy" is sure to sell.

FF Tactics > FFVII
Xenogears > FFVII
|
ff7 (<3<3<3<3<3<3<3) ff6 (snes <3) . . . ff12 ff8 ff10 rest
edit: also, final fantasy is nice too. but i don't cout it to main parts.. the story is just too short/weak. but gameplay makes me addicted TT (spent 179 hours @ DS with FF:Tactics A2)

ouch, saying Xenogears > FFVII is pretty harsh, what with Xenogears being complete trash. (it's also false since FFVII is a decent game that at least has the motorcycle minigame)
Dunno why people thing the series is going "downhill" when it's just been a cash cow to keep Square afloat for the longest time. They don't mess with the formula much because when they try something new, people just BAWWWWW and when they leave it mostly the same, people BAWW still but it's less and they still sell a million copies so who cares.

Man, I beat 12 like 8months ago and I didn't think it was that bad of a game. I mean I didn't really care for the characters all that much and dialogue wasn't much to write home about, but overall I have to say I did enjoy the game and I thought it had a good story. The system was something completely new which I was aggervated with at first, but came to accept it and thought it was "ok". I guess I have a higher tolerance for the FF games because I find that they all have excellent stories and I just work my way through a good story.
Everyone also always bashes 8 which I never understood. I really enjoyed 8's story I think it may be one of the best. 3 for the SNES is also one of my favorites I think the PS release made it 5 or 6? I figure I don't have to mention 7 anywhere in here because anything I say will have already been said millions of times before.

Off T: Please tell me you are talking about BG:Dark Alliance here and not BG1 or BG2. Dark Alliance is just named BG for sale reason, it has nothing to do with the true BG games (which are the best games ever made imo).
On T: Compare the combat system from FF VI to that of FF XII and tell me that those two aren't diffirent.

TheSpoonyOne on youtube did an entire video series on eight, and quite frankly none of the games after eight really did anything to try to bring new light to the party. All the series has been since the release of VII is them trying to remake VII just with another "I" tacked on the end, or if you're real classy an "X" added somewhere. And to be perfectly honest, VII was mainly trying to be VI except in 3D. The Final Fantasy series is one of those (groups of) games that no matter what the content of the game, people are so fanatical about it that it'll be purchased by the truckload.
I agree with this
I think 8, flaws and all, was the last great FF (9 was garbage)

When I think of a RP game... it has to have a good combat system, and great story. FFT had a cool combat system. :D I think I might play it over again cus that game was so sexy.

I hated Tactics

The best of the best FF is Final Fantasy Tactics. It has the most intelligent game mechanics I've ever seen. They should make another game like that for the new generation consoles.

My Final Fantasy Rankings:
1. Final Fantasy VIII (YEAH, I FUCKING SAID IT) 2. Final Fantasy X 3. Final Fantasy VII 4. Final Fantasy XII 4. Final Fantasy IV 5. Final Fantasy IX
Those are the only ones i've played.
I don't think Final Fantasy has gone downhill ONE BIT. As a matter of fact, I think they have adapted the franchise quite well.
Final Fantasy VII was a great game, but when I go back to replay the FF's I often get bored with FFVII. FFVII earns it's place on my list for nostalgia less for how it's held up over the years. IMO it's just too over-rated.
I thought Final Fantasy VIII was great. I liked the junctioning system, you didn't have to grind in order to attain really strong characters and I didn't think Squall was a little bitch, unlike most FF fans. Ultimecia was a shitty boss, I'l admit that, but I can go back and play this game anytime and be thoroughly entertained.
Final Fantasy X was a mix of VII and VIII for me. There are parts I really liked and parts I didn't. I liked the Aeons and the story mostly, but I didn't connect with Tidus at all, I just didn't like his character much. A great game overall.
Let's forget that Final Fantasy X-2 even exists...
Lastly, Final Fantasy XII I really, really enjoyed. This was the first Final Fantasy that I enjoyed mostly because of it's gameplay. It looked great, had a LOT of extra content (hunts, anyone?) and was just a long and complete game. I spent over 100hours on this game, I have the save file and it was great the whole time. The story wasn't developed and I halfway through you can tell that it just isn't going anywhere, but I accepted it because they were doing something so different with the combat.
I cannot wait for Final Fantasy XIII and I think it'll be just like XII, but with the story on par with the likes of VII, VIII and X.

I think my favourite is 8, even though it got pretty damn awful. I used to hate 9 a lot, but i played it again recently and it isn't so bad.
12 however...i played that damn thing for 45+ hours and i had no fucking idea what i was doing let alone why a 14 year old girl is battering professional soldiers ![](/mirror/smilies/sadley.gif)
10 was a cool game, just not a cool final fantasy game, if you understand that

Just thinking about the ones I have played 7 Good story and gameplay. I somehow played it on computer at that time and that guy with a machine gun on his hand was a fucking squre block, so I wasn't too impressed when I play it again when you know the story. 8 is actually fucking great with amazing graphics at that time (PS1), I got to beat the game with like stupid levels and it was funny. Also equip those element was fucking interesting, more so if they don't show the impact and let us find out. 9 is fucking awful, most crazy part is 'trying' to make everything 'cute', but I know people say otherwise and some tell me that it is call Final Fantasy.... so it is not real..... 10 has a very good story, but I hate the gameplay (those sphere shit for example) and level part of character. I don't think I actually did any random leveling, or just maybe I got lost a few times. Probably the hardest storyline to understand? I know you are not suppose to pick it all out and understand every detail, but still I guess I am bored. 12 Fuck yes graphics, hate the fact that I don't get surprised and ambushed by enemy (not much I admit, but still keep me awake). Kind of short story? or only because I understood it well.... one way or the other it is not something I will go back and play again. Never bothered to play online versions.....

I love how everyone ignores X-2, it's like it's even consider a part of the series. Lol~
I liked 4 the best, it's simplicity made me fall in love with it~
