Or are they losing users so they are trying to be more appealing.

I still don't understand why people would shell out 10 bucks for a single skin, but apparently I'm in the minority. 4 games on steam sale or a skin? Hm.... I'm also curious as to how the silver coin prices will be rebalanced. I bought my last skin around christmas last year, and I now have around 2000 silver coins. So that's an estimated 9 months of playing for a single skin.

For some people though who play HoN a lot those 4 steam games are just extra games on their backlog that they might not ever play where as if they play HoN a lot they'll at least get use out of the skin.

But supply demand obviously dictates the price, and apparently people feel like those were well spent money. I don't understand it, but as I said I guess I am in the minority.

I feel that you are not even remotely getting your moneys worth. Virtual goods in a game should be cheap(especially considering the rate at which they spew out new alt avatars). But this is more of a gripe with microtransaction based games in general, because in other games you'll also pay 10 bucks for a single skin, weapon model or what have you. Why would anyone ever bother to paint warhammer models? you could play just fine without spending all that time and money on paints.

I tend not to buy stuff in these games, but I always thought of it as a donation + reward more than a purchase. It's a bit like a reverse kickstarter (since the product is already out) in my opinion.

People seem to assume that they must have skins all the time, i haven't met many people who bought all the cheap skins and can legitimately say that he cannot buy anything for under say 2000 silver. I played counter strike for years, and that game gave my account nothing, not even shitty achievements because it was before achievements came out. If you're playing hon for the skins i think you're playing for the wrong reasons.

People who spend a lot of time playing a game are often happy to invest extra money for added effects be it customisation of a hero or otherwise. You suggest virtual goods in a game should be cheap, but why should they, when people are working hard to produce these things.

For casual play, sure, but during tournaments you're actually being rewarded extra points for having your miniatures painted or they deduce the points if your army is unpainted (all that aside from the "best painted army" award and prize). In Battlefleet Gothic you even have a rule for it in the rulebook, where your unpainted units get lower stats (fresh crew and unfinished ship leaving the shipyard was the fluff explanation for this rule). And on top of that, unpainted miniatures look ugly and boring. I actually prefer painting them to playing this days. Just to play around with INT beastwood or other fun stuff (saw Gunblade with Genjuro and Codex today, pretty hardcore stuff if you ask me, he owned the game). I was away from it for some time and I have to say I was pretty surprised to see 70k+ people on average when I returned. It seems that HoN has doubled its population while I was gone.
