Chrono Trigger Monkey Island 1-4 Sam and Max Season 1 (episodic) Zelda (all of them up to and including ocarina of time) Riddick: Escape from butcher bay Half-Life 2, Ep1, Ep2
If you enjoyed Banjoo-Kazooie, go and get Tooie asap, it won't let you down. While you're at it, you could try out the Zelda series (Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask in particular)
DooT rocks, I have yet to play it through though...had some problems with it on my old comp, and now I don't have it anymore.
Oh, and back to Rareware: I would suggest "beating" Bad Fur Day. "Beating", cause it's kinda the EASIEST game ever made (seriously! you just can't fail it), but the parodies in it are just golden
And I still disagree with venom, Banjo-Tooie was enjoyable
Monkey Island 3 (I think this is the best of the series) Thief 1 (this was really innovative for its time) Diablo II and LOD (just to watch all the cinematics, hehe)
The Legend of Zelda 1/2/SNES/Gameboy/64 Half-Life 1 Goldeneye Super Mario 1/3/SNES/64 FF7 Starcraft Tony Hawk Pro Skater (Any of them) Command and Conquer Red Alert Wing Commander 1/2/3/4 Pokemon Red/Blue
Alot have been mentioned before. Every zelda, including the newer ones. (maybe skip #2?) Metroid Prime 1+2+3 Resident Evil 2+3+4 Beyond good and evil ENTIRE METAL GEAR SERIES OMG
Monster hunter on PS2, Baldur Gates II, Baldur Gates II expansion Throne of Bhaal Literally you can keep replaying and replaying and there are SO MANY mods for BGII for you to add Great fun
Contra because they're some of the most hardcore shootingfests available Metroid Prime because of the atmosphere, the music, the great leveldesign and the badass bosses Half-life because well, it's Half-life =( Just the best singleplayer shooter EVAR Ikaruga because it will change your life, like it changed this guy's life

None of these games deserves mention except Half-Life and perhaps Morrowind and Max Payne. Rest is just normal FPS games which contributed nothing to the evolution of the genre...
And I don't know how the hell someone could place Diablo 2 instead of Diablo, it just displays ignorance.

Well I would strongly disagree with that, especially for Far Cry (good graphic, hard and very long) and Fear (awesome atmosphere and A.I.). The Call of Cthulhu had a great story and really tense creepy atmosphere. Hitman is cool, maybe you are not lover of that genre? Of course Diablo is a great game, but the graphic and interface are way outdated so that could turn him off that game, so D2 is normal choice. I wanted to mention newer games that are worth playing.
If you are planning to play through Bioshock, try playing System Shock 1&2 as well, though it might be hard to run on any OS after 98 2. edition. Actually it was quite buggy back then too
Bioshock just left me with nothing much, and 90% of the cool things in Bioshock is copied from SS 1 & 2. SS2 is more of a challenge for a gamer too.
On October 28 2007 20:51 Polis wrote: What is Nox game play in mp, anybody play it still? I found single player to be pretty good as for hack&slash game.
It was going well for years after release, even though there was rarely more than a few hundred players on the servers. Then Westwood went bankrupt, as EA bought Westwood they shut all the servers down... A few years ago someone started a private server for old Westwood games, but the population is now very scarce. Now only some koreans and a couple of americans play it regulary. The thing that made Nox so good in multiplayer was the way you had to react. If you compare Nox and Quake3, Nox almost required more reflexes and quickness than the FPS genre, even though it was rubricated as a RPG.
Single player was really fun, but also very linear and short which doesn't make it last as long as other action-RPG-style games. The focus was really on multiplayer and it was the main purpose of the game for Westwood - to make a great clan-based and fun game which would last forever online. It's still very intense and well made but as it was released just a couple of weeks before Diablo 2, everybody ditched the game and bought Blizzard's instead - even though both games got about as good reviews .

I've played all of those games except F.E.A.R... And even though I agree that most of them are worth playing, this thread wasn't about games that are just worth playing. More like... legendary games that inspire you which you'll love even if you pick them up 10 years from now. I was mainly thinking about Far Cry and SoF games, hell, they had good graphics for their time but when such graphics fade in the light of even newer game, there isn't really much left under the surface. It isn't the same with... say Half-Life which still is a quality game after all this time. The Call of Cthulhu was fun, and despite not having high end graphics, kinda frightening, but not an exceptional game. And the Hitman series are nothing compared to Thief. absolutely. a must-play.
what's planescape torment like?
story based rpg, light fighting elements, lots of well written dialogue, fantastic story set in a original gameworld (none of that pansy high fantasy, proper dark setting, maybe comparable to fallout for dark atmosphere)... not guaranteed that anyone would like it since its a far cry from your usual hack and slash rpg, both in setting and in story/scope, but anyone should at least try it because they should know what they're missing
there are lots of reviews on the net, even new ones (revisiting the game couple of years after its release), so i recommend reading some for a clearer picture.
You HAVE to play the Metal Gear Solid series, beginning with the one for playstation.
WARNING: This game is not a game. This game is intense. Play it on the hardest difficulty from the very beginning. As you're getting used to it, you'll take quite a bit of time (30 minutes, even) trying to figure out how to sneak past the guards in THE VERY FIRST ROOM. But let me tell you, this game is not a game. Solid Snake is a character that has character. Kojima is a master of the art that the tale and characters of this series has forged. This game is not a game. The characters are real. The rivals are real. The guards are real, and you WILL die if they catch you. At some points it'll freak the fuck out of you 'cause it can get so intense. This game is NOT a game. Every game in the series has a different theme: Genes, Memes, Scenes, something else, i don't remember. Anyways. It is deep.
Fucking deep. Solid Snake is a philosopher, hardened by war, by blood, by sacrifice. He is a clone, but he fights for freedom, true Freedom with a fucking capital-F. I want to have gay sex with him.
So do you. Trust me. Just play the game. And play it on the hardest difficulty. Unless you're a pussy. And you hate freedom. And liberty. And you don't support our troops.

surprised someone else actually played the king's quest series. check out space quest and as someone mentioned quest for glory.

a lot of the games mentioned are jokes.
not sure if anyone mentioned ninjagaiden [the original trilogy] metroid series zelda series [don't bother for any that came out after the snes one] castlevania series [minus the n64 one]
there's a lot more, if you really care you can pm me and i'll think about it some more.

I agree with that. Maybe I am pushing this debate too far, but I really didn`t see this thread as the very best games you have to beat. It that case very few can be mentioned in terms of originality, level design etc. I have been playing computer games since `96. For myself I could say that I am very nostalgic player. I prefer older games than new ones, but you can`t live in the past. Blood 2, System Shock 2 and AvP are my favorite games by far. If you have been playing since `96 until now you have to agree that todays games do not have a soul. Unfortunately today is all about good graphic. If you have kick ass graphic then nothing else matters, not story, A.I. level design or any other aspect of the game.
However even in newer times there are games that are worth playing and stand out as I mentioned. It is shame IMO that todays games are all about graphic. But sometimes you have to just stick with what you have, and value any kind of originality or cool gameplay. I am really glad that developers of HL2 are investing more in developing of story/music and the overall feeling in the game then they are in top notch graphic. I really value that. You could easily say that popular games we play today are rip off or dumbed down older games. One of this example can bee seen in Bioshock. Of course Bioshock will never be as good as SS2 was. I just wanted to clarify some things
Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninja! woo!! Golden Axe, Knights of the Round, Final Fight, Metal Slug, Altered Beast, Contra, etc.
My odd love for lame arcade side scrolling fighters aside, Maniac Mansion of course, Full Throttle, DK Country, Loom, Most of the FF series, Grandstream saga(ps1 game, underated imo), Clive Barker's Undying, Mcgee's Alice, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus to name a few. Haven't played a good game in quite awhile though, guess I can give Bioshock a try.
no one mentioned valkyrie profile? no simon quest? barely super metroid? but.. in other hand some mentioned loom, monkey island, sam & max, day of tentacle, cannon fodder but NO Gorilla.bas?! nibbles.bas? those were some badass oldschool games, i must say oldschool games are sometimes more challenging
super mario rpg for SNES, fucking unbelievable SNES game
Glover - terrible game for the casual gamer, but this game is so wierd/difficult it makes newbs cry. a must play if you have N64....dont expect to beat it.
Monkey Island - catchin dem monkeyz with red lights on their head, wtf but so fun
Donkey Kong 64/Banjo kazooie/Banjo Tooie - all pretty epic platformer/collector games that are humorous and take forever to fully complete. Ever since the N64 I haven't seen games like this that just have so much depth(even if the gameplay isnt that great)
pretty much all old school mario games...classic
and uh...Super man game for SNES. pretty hard to beat, took me a while. Iceman level is fuckin hard.
Oh hell yeah, one of the posters made me realise I forgot the Commander Keen series! You really just HAVE to beat that. Period.
And I really heard a lot of good things about Planescape Torment, I spose I should get it (I usually don't play that much of random games through, I like to stick with 1-2 and master it - like SC, eh )
Fairly unknown Blip & Blop : Balls of steel : it's in the Metal Slug style, where your evil enemies are now smurfs, pokemons, mario, etc. (it appears the site of the developers doesn't exist anymore it's free and very easy to find a download for it though).

I thought it was only slightly overrated. It was a mildly fun game, but at the end the storyline really picked up and got good. Playing through it I thought it was overrated as well, but by the end I was really impressed. Very good game.
FF7, Chrono Trigger coem to mind as some of the greatest of all time, for me anyway, megaman X was also good, but i think RPG's seem to have more value in beating them, then lets say a FPS or soemthing. Pokemon was a good game, i probabl beat it like 20+ times.
How could i almost forget, EVERY SINGLE ZELDA GAME EVER MADE. (Or the ones i listed, i dmit i haven't played them all)
Actually windwaker sucked, atelast the part of it i played before getting pissed and throwing it out the window.
The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess The Legend Of Zelda: Majora's Mask The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time The Legend Of Zelda: The one ofr snes wihch name escapes me.
all of them are pretty sick, btw zelda is my favorite game ever. The best 2 are undoubtably the n64 ones for me, then Twilight Princess. Majora's mask was insanely underrated.
Final Fantasy 3 (SNES) Super Punch-Out Punch-Out Final Fantasy 1 (NES) Final Fantasy 7 Final Fantasy 8 Final Fantasy 10 Final Fantasy 12 Every Zelda All The PokeMon's Starcraft Starcraft: Brood War Warcraft 2 Super Smash Brothers: Melee Tenchu: Wrath Of Heaven Ninja Gaiden (NES) Gauntlet Dark Legacy (PS2) Devil May Cry 1/2/3/ Resident Evil: 1/2/3/CodeV:X/4/0 Super Mario World :3 Mario Brothers StreetFighter: 2 Mario Kart: Double Dash Mario Kart SOLTAIRE MINESWEEPER (rofl midian/lil.susie) Level Fucking Computer (cheers exalted :D) Inc's Ultralish Rush . The best game EVER : FF7 ! then a few game I played was great like Zelda (dont remember the name on SNES) Zelda Ocarina Of Time ( Majora's mask sucked) Secret Of Mana (SNES) Chrono Trigger Mario Smash Bross (on 64) Mario Kart (on 64) Goldeneye (rofl I was quite young and it was so much fun :d on 64) Resident Evil 1/2/3/4/0 Time Splitters (on gcube) PES5 was the greatest football game I ever played Final Fantasy X Tales Of symphonia (on gcube) Brood War of course :p Valkyrie Profile
and I'm sure I'm forgetting some game but right now cant remember all ;p
The first Unreal game was kind of magic for me. It's so insanely enormous on every level and the level design is very very cool because there is so much you don't have to do but you want to. I haven't seen a game to rival this part of it yet. I think this should be on your list.
Glover - terrible game for the casual gamer, but this game is so wierd/difficult it makes newbs cry. a must play if you have N64....dont expect to beat it.
lolll anyone else play this game before? glover for n64 was insanely hard game
Bah wrote good reviews for all these games but I fucked up. Fucking shit hell fuck why can't i hit back when I misclick and not lose everything I wrote? Ah whatever these are the games I recommend:
Duke Nukem 3D Beneath a steel sky Full Throttle Day of the tentacle Sam'n'Max Monkey Island 5 days a stranger, 7 days a sceptic etc etc. game series made by some guy called yahtzee. google they are very good. Daggerfall
If you don't play Breath of Fire 2, FF3 (american 3, it's the japanesse 6 I think) and Secret of Mana the whole way through, you may as well never play SNES RPGs.
Oblivion Metal Gear (Series) God Of War (both) Ninja Gaiden (hardest game ever) Final Fantasy (obviously) The Secret Of Mana (Super Nintendo game that blew my mind)

It works perfectly fine in Opera, the page is not reloaded and the form is filled as it was. Can't live without it myself.
I've been googling 'Top' lists and searching through my rom files to compile this over the last hour.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island Crimsonland Dark Colony Super Mario 64 (in fact any mario game before GC) Metal Slug games (there are like 5-6 I think, some of them seem like the same game but still fun) Gradius 3 Quake, Doom, Wolfenstien 3d (classic FPS) super bomberman 2 Earth bound Portal (game looks awesome i'm about to play it) Knights of the Round (this one on either arcade or SNES:clicky GTA:3 TMNT 3: Manhattan Project Zombies Ate My Neighbors Secret Of Evermore Twisted Metal: 1 2 3 and Black (4 & small brawl sucked) Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike Capcom vs SNK 2 Oddworld: Abe's Oddysey (haven't played the other ones in the series) UT:2k4 and 3 looks really good. I obviously agree with like 90% of the ones people already quoted. I'm not gonna re-list them all. But out of my top 3 or so favorite games of all time Zelda SNES, Super metroid, and Chrono trigger are there. (played them all at least 3 times). The best games came from the Late NES, Whole SNES era, and early PS1 times.
btw the best video game franchise of all time is only mentioned twice? props to those few tho.. Kind of sad to see how many "gamers" have not played this franchise D: No other video game is composed so beautifully (maybe half-life).. I shouldn't even have to try to persuade anyone to play it
and no, the acid versions on psp are not part of the mgs franchise.
Only other franchise that comes close is the Half-life series. Half-life, Half-life 2, Episode 1, Portal, TF2 and Episode 2 are of the highest quality and I give them all my highest recommendations. Anything Valve touches is pure fucking genius. Starcraft SP is also top knotch imo, I might be a little biased here tho
Glover - terrible game for the casual gamer, but this game is so wierd/difficult it makes newbs cry. a must play if you have N64....dont expect to beat it.
lolll anyone else play this game before? glover for n64 was insanely hard game
I had it for pc, it was even worse trying to play on a keyboard ( I think you could use the mouse a bit too)
One of the Sonic's One Tomb Raider/RE Sonic Adventure for DC (one of my favorite if not favorite games of all time) Shenmue 1 or 2 (gets repetitive if youve beaten the first one IMO)
Others most have mentioned. megamans Super Mario 64 etc.
edit: Just thought of one i remember having a shitload of fun on, Battle Toads and Double Dragon.....
That was the shit
One of the Final Fight series too, those beat em up games were great when I was a little kid(man videogames were so much cooler then IMO, was more fun playing with friends in person as opposed to online and shit nowadays(probably because im older and everyone has jobs and stuff now)). During summer, go playbasketball/baseball all day and then play videogames all night while out in a tent or garage or somethign with like 8 friends.
I played both Fallouts some time ago so I don't remember them in detail but most important differences are that Fallout 1 is easier and shorter than Fallout 2. Fallout 1 has maybe a more appealing in-game atmosphere. Fallout 2 has more of everyhing (more quests, NPCs, items, weapons etc) but felt slightly more random. I would not rate one over the other, both are fun to play.
Fallout 1&2 Baldur's Gate 1&2 Half-Life 1&2 Morrowind Oblivion Heroes of Might and Magic 2 Grim Fandango Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Myth: The Fallen Lords (really cool game, I recommend it to everyone) Super Mario World & Yoshi's Island (the hardest beatable platformer ever)
Some random games I didn't see mentioned while breezing through this thread (i.e. might have missed).
River City Ransom (I probably just dated myself, but I loved this game) Tenju (much more fun if you try to beat every level perfectly) X-COM Bubble Bobble

Many extremely good, even groundbreaking games which could easily be forgotten and even unheard by the newer generation of players have already been said (settlers, star control 2, loom etc..)
I'll continue that list with some games that haven't been mentioned in neither of your threads:
Adom (Ancient Domains of Mystery; nethack-like text game) [PC] MOO (master of orion (1,2)) [PC] MOM (master of magic) [PC]
And as a 'newer' addition of an extremely good game that really stands from the others in design, this was however mentioned in the previous thread, but should be mentioned here as well since it's really that unique:

Vvardenfell, the explorable part of the province of Morrowind in the third game has 6 square miles. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has approximately 16 square miles to explore.
Daggerfall is the largest Elder Scrolls game to date, featuring a game world estimated as being 161,600 square Kilometres (63,125 square miles) with over 15,000 towns, cities, villages, and dungeons for the player's character to explore
This includes a few games I've beaten but I must recommend them. Some might be disputed but they're just games that I remember that I liked a lot at the time. Some of them are MUSTS and others are just fun games I really enjoyed.

This game is so hilariously gory, I remember playing it when I was like 8-9years old and having nightmares. sorry, i don't agree with that. I warily played through the game, which was by all standards flawless (as the critique also says), but that's about it. There is nothing genious about the game. The graphics are top notch, the riddles are smart but it's just a tad too polished and without any surprises. As I finished it I had like 0 motivation to play it through again and that's never a good sign.
