He said something about how sad it was that Stormgate failed because now, nobody will ever try to make an RTS on that kind of epic scale again. He's still posting in the Discord: ![]() It's not clear exactly what the "engineering challenges" are that they are waiting on, but I suspect Gobsmack is still holding out hope that Tim will find a miracle "partner" that will allow them to pay for actual engineering work so that his dream update for Stormgate can finally come out and take the world by, er, Storm. Unfortunately I don't think "We just have to wait a little longer for Tim to be able to pay a guy to fix the game, but we're wisely using all this extra time to do incredible things like updating the tree building so that it no longer has the team colors for its leaves" is going to be the unprecedented slam-dunk comeback of the century for Stormgate that he imagines it will be.

Tim could've replaced their software engineers with Indian demiurges. Now the "development" is bottlenecked by their ability to communicate, using ChatGPT. So our best-selling autor has to wait.

It's definitely a theory, but they would still have to pay these contractors somehow. Tim Postmorten saying "Some work continues, but companies run on capital" makes it sound like they have absolutely no money left. And of course, all the "wildly inaccurate" financial speculation posts turned out to be completely accurate, so it's not really that big a reach to come to this conclusion. Gobsmack isn't an artist, so the handful of unit and texture updates he's teased were probably just things that were already in the middle of being developed when the money ran out. But when he says things like this: ![]() it really makes it sound like he's the only guy doing any work at this point.

He could just make his map as a mod for free. Sounds like a win for him.

Yeah if whatever it is doesn’t move the needle, hope it doesn’t crush their spirit. On the flipside if it somehow does flip things around, that’s gotta be up there with the most spectacular salvage jobs in game development history

There's no money left at Frost Giant to pay anyone.

Why don't just use WC3/SC2/DotA2 one instead?

Why don't just use WC3/SC2/DotA2 one instead? According to a guy on the Discord, the Stormgate editor is easier to use than the Starcraft II editor. Of course, that's mostly because the Stormgate editor doesn't have any features besides terrain editing, but maybe it's a bit easier for that? Gobsmack is also teasing that editor improvements are part of the upcoming patch, so maybe they'll finally add triggers that don't require reverse-engineering and manually editing JSON files? Maybe. It still astounds me that Stormgate's map editor was apparently worked on last, and wasn't even remotely finished at launch. There was even a mission designer who left Frost Giant because he was so frustrated at how unfinished and useless the editing tools were. (EDIT: He even came back to argue with Tim Postmorten on one of the LinkedIn threads about this, which was hilarious) The fact that the ladder has only three generic maps, and the campaign is full of weirdly balanced, rushed, and buggy maps is a result of those imbalanced priorities. These tools should be the first thing you build, because it amplifies your development velocity from then on. It lets you experiment rapidly and "find the fun". But apparently it was more important to hire esports directors on Day 1.

According to a guy on the Discord, the Stormgate editor is easier to use than the Starcraft II editor. That is ridiculous, most of the functionality is locked behind editing text files right now.

I ruled out people with the #OpenToWork tag on their profiles, because they are busy looking for new jobs, not volunteering to keep working for no pay at their old one. I didn't include anyone who currently has another job listed in their profile, or contractors whose job was to do one specific thing, like making a soundtrack, or writing an ebook. I also eliminated any producers, managers, "thought leaders" and such, leaving only people who did actual specific work, like programming or art. The result was one developer, one server developer, four artists including the UI guy, and zero sound people. Of course any of them could have new jobs and just haven't updated their LinkedIns. But this is the maximum amount of people who could in theory be helping Gobsmack achieve his dream. ![]()
