(and ofc if they wanna add a 4th race)

I don't know if there's much to read into right now.
Makes sense they just leave it to 3rd parties to do esports as they see fit in 2024, since they seem to be on a tight budget and need to focus on making sure Early Access is as successful as possible. I expect the Global Championship to be all-online at this point, or maybe mixed online-offline with a very small offline component.
As for 2025, my read is that this is more aspirational if everything goes right in 2nd half 2024. The focus right now is clearly the core game, and everything else is a bridge they'll cross when they get there.

To the extent that esports is basically an advertisement that is meant to attract the attention of potential players, it makes much more sense for them to keep their focus on making the game fun to play, and making it look like it's fun to play, before they make any kind of attempt to support an esports scene. Investing resources in building an esports scene that could have been spent on improving gameplay at this stage would be a doubly dumb move, paying money to spread the word that your product isn't ready for prime time yet.

this was the sweetest job anyone ever had
"Maybe I should cut down my lunch time today ... I have to get some funding ready for that online tournament in 4 years. Nah its probably fine."

you mean like they drew a bunch of stickers they are going to give out in the grassroots esports tourneys?

I get why it's a bait for jokes, but realistically speaking what's so odd about it? If they decided they had to cut development of the map editor because of budget reasons and let some people go who had worked on it for a couple of years, we'd say it was an unfortunate casualty. Esports systems don't pop up out of nowhere, so there was obvious real work being done to prepare for their earlier, rosier projections for the game.

If I'm not mistaken, TorcH was the esports manager at Frost Giant right?
I'm surprised he left or was let go a year before launch after being there for 2 years, but if the plans were in place by that time I guess it makes sense.
Either way, I can't wait for EA to finally release so people can actually get to talking about the game and not conspiracy theories about their behind the scenes. I expect they'll be some more preview videos coming out soon with regards to new units/features of EA

yknow what, god bless the folks able to make a living getting positions at companies by telling their employers that they are esports experts and can just astroturf an esports scene for a game even though the game doesn't exist yet.

Thanks for your interest in supporting Stormgate!
You won’t miss out on anything other than additional playtime if you wait until August 13 or later to pull the trigger. The Early Access packs will still be on sale.
FYI, Early Access is an active development phase and the game will see lots of changes and more content before our official release, including in terms of performance.
If you’re on the fence, be sure to play EA for free first so that you can be 100% sure that you’ll be satisfied with your decision to support the dev team before making a purchase.
a reddit guy asked about whether or not the game would perform well on his PC. he got a pretty based response from the comms guy at FG. Its nice to see.

This Huston guy is nothing special. All of AAA is super bloated which is why games are getting better and better in the face of non-stop layoffs.
I convert Visual Foxpro database systems over to C#//.NET in hours using a parser tool and compiler I built in 2009. The parser I made was my final project for a half credit AI course. I bill for 100s of hours while it takes me a fraction of the time. meh.
There are 87 bazillion social media videos of Tech workers in the south west USA explaining how they do nothing all day while at work except get massages and hang out in the cafeteria between games of table tennis.
Frost Giant is located in the south west USA. However, Tim Morten stated that this is the most "mission driven" team with which he has ever worked. So I'm pretty sure there is no one lazing around at Frost Giant though. I think they are all crunching like crazy right now.
I'm pretty excited to see what they have in store for the RTS genre!

Just because this could theoretically be true of any tech job doesn't make it a useful contribution to the thread. You're banned from the thread for a month again, see you after early access

The thought of them consulting with their marketing department (nonexistent according to their own words) and financial team (likely nonexistent or bad at their job) over this was funny and ironic to me.

We've allowed plenty of criticism and skepticism in the thread; this is just straight up baseless and pointless hating

yep. be critical all you want but if you think they kept torch employed for 2 years and he did nothing and had the easiest job ever u are sorely mistaken. thats not how companies work. they will probably carry a lot of his ideas with or without his presence. last i checked frost giant is not non-profit. they are a business. with the intent of being profitable. you dont keep a guy hired for 2 years doing nothing.

I ordered a new fancy mouse from China; watch out everyone. I expect to be the 2024 world champion, and beyond. I also hit diamond 2 as random in SC2. With this new mouse, the sky's the limit.
On topic (?): during particularly stressful times for me at work, I used read the /r/sysadmin subreddit. It's fun to read stories of IT folk who might do 30 minutes of work a day, if that (sometimes it's like 1 hour of work a week). All while working from home and making decent pay. Of course, for every lucky person who has a slack job, I'm sure there are 40 others who are grinding away - probably trying to get to that 30 minutes/day job!
(I read these threads because I imagined a much easier job for myself I thought I might be good at - I know it's nowhere near the norm!)
I'm sure TorcH is a decently hard worker (based on the fact he was a semi-pro gamer, which I think takes a lot of effort). But it's not hard to imagine he wasn't filling 40 hours a week being the e-sports manager for a game 2 years away from release. Especially one with basically no marketing budget (esports is basically marketing, isn't it?)
I can imagine him doing a lot of work up front and then maybe trying to help out in other ways? Who knows. if he wasn't doing much, I don't fault him for it. When capital was cheap a few years ago (due to low interest rates), I'm sure FGS were happy to try to employ lots of people and have a grand vision of things. If they wanted to keep paying me for that, I wouldn't say no.

I can only speak for my own experience, which I did a while back in this thread. As a tiny grassroots organizer, especially at a time when Microsoft (via Worlds Edge) was basically giving me and most AoE4 community efforts the middle finger, it felt genuinely nice to have someone from a direct position in the development team ask for my feedback.
It came after one of Frost Giant's Reddit threads, can't remember if its was an AMA (way before the most recent one) or one of those megathreads asking the community for their thoughts on some big-picture stuff. When esports came up, I gave my feedback, and then TorcH decided to follow up with me on some of that.
You can think of it as insignificant. But made me genuinely happy to be heard with the understanding that, yes, I was a community organizer, not even a content creator, but he still listened to my thoughts and offered actionable ideas for the future. (he also said LP Contributors are goated, which always gets on my good side)
I have no idea as to what the day to day for him or Heyoka is when it relates to esports. But at least through the actions I have seen, they seem far more reasonable to grassroots and community efforts than most other devs out there. Granted, it is easy to be friendly to grassroots when you are working with a small marketing budget overall, but still.

when I was reached for feedback I told them to bury 1 of the 35 million dollars in a box in the ground so they have enough money for esports for 2 years
to be fair its possible they may have listened but lost track of the box and that's why they recently hired an archaeologist — for some kind of ground survey
