You know what a beta is right? ofcourse this is a technical test. Its not a demo. Betas like this are also on older, stable builds of the game.
The memory consumption as it stands is atrocious right now though. Turning down the settings doesn't help.
That said the auto settings putting me on the literal max settings and if they are able to get that under control it *seems* like the game is insanely optimized.

loving the play-test so far. the story looks really interesting and gameplay feels fun! can't say there is anything i've disliked yet. (at least from a Sorc perspective)

Are you saying modern consoles are literally looking like graphics that were outdated more than 10 years ago? Anyway, it's not even about the graphics, really, it's the design specifically with the colour-palette, especially for circles beneath the characters, tone and so on. I liked the design previously shown for D4. It lacked some contrast but it was so much better than D3 for this series. However, by no means it looked like "giga PC settings". The graphics were not great in any video. That's not a bad thing btw. that's just typical Blizzard. However, you can make things look very good/fitting without state-of-the-art graphics and they came much closer to achieving that with previous footage compared to now.

the circles underneath each character are because this is couch co-op and if you've ever played, you'll know its sometimes difficult to track your character with all of the effects on-screen since you're not centered. from an accessibility standpoint alone, this is nothing that should shock you.

I'm not sure I understand what you don't understand? There is a difference between graphics (technical) and design. Their technical side is not that great on PC, either, but they still made it look good. People made games look good 10 years ago, too. I understood your first post this way: The game looks bad because consoles can't handle good graphics like a PC. Which, while somewhat true, I responded to in disbelief that consoles are in fact so bad that good design can't make a game look good still. I'm aware what the circles are for, thank you. What I'm saying is they could have chosen colours/hues which fit in better with the surrounding world. Why use neon-colours in a diablo game?

having some issues with the game. Wouldn't let me enter the main town (Kyovashad or something). Google told me to go to char select and re log in. Now I can't get back in. Don't want to relog because it'll be 2 hour queue again
otherwise, gameplay and graphics seem pretty good. Free respec until lvl 15 is nice for experimentation. Don't get the complaints about graphics tbh, looks pretty good to me. Though it feels extremely familiar, like I've seen this all before. for some this could be a good thing

The Diablo subreddit is saying there is a MASSIVE memory leak issue right now.
Also.... Can you customize your chars in this beta or is that still disabled?
edit: So apparently the overlay map is gone. Sucks.
edit #2:
Hi everyone
Just wanted to provide an update regarding the queues players are experiencing this morning. The team is working through some issues behind the scenes that have been affecting players and causing them to be disconnected from the servers. For the time being, we are managing the rate of players entering the game until we have a full fix for the disconnection issues. This is done so we can ensure stability amongst players who get into the game after the queue process. If you are in queue, we ask that you stay in queue to ensure you do not reset your timer. We plan to have more accurate queue countdowns in place for Open Beta next weekend as noted in our Known Issues post.
We are actively working on these issues for this weekend. Once these are resolved we will be able to increase the influx of players and queue times will be significantly reduced.
We will be updating this thread once we have additional information.

You can customize your character. I changed my guy's skin tone and hair
does anyone know if weapons always contribute to damage? or only if you use relevant skills. Like does my Bow's damage matter for when I use dagger skills?

First impressions and stream of consciousness / took notes while playing (I played as the sorcerer for one hour, will play a lot more over the next two days):
1. Decent visual customization for "naked" character appearance (I don't really care much about this, plus I'll be eventually wearing gear).
2. Beautiful Blizzard cinematic scenes and darker, grittier graphics, as I had hoped.
3. The familiar music puts me right back in the Diablo universe.
4. I had incorrectly assumed that it would take just a few kills to level up from level 1 to level 2 (like in Diablo 2), but at this rate it's going to take at least 50 enemies to fill up the experience bar for the first time. The beginning feels much, much slower, especially since the enemies are pretty spread out (no spells for a little while, not much to do besides run around and use a basic melee attack).
5. Character pathing feels inconsistent, in that clicking around a corner doesn't really make my hero automatically run around the corner in a "smart" way; sometimes he gets stuck and I feel like I need to click more linearly and "guide" the hero around a corner with multiple clicks and smaller angle adjustments.
6. I just found / spoke to a woman, got a quest, and magically leveled up from level 1 to level 2, when I was only halfway to level 2. Now I'm automatically halfway to level 3. Very confused by this... The quest didn't require me to do anything except follow her, and I got so much experience that it makes me feel like the killing of the first 20+ enemies had no benefit to me whatsoever. At least I can pick a spell now, I guess.
7. Opened up the skill tree as a sorcerer, and wow these skill names/setups are pretty bad. The basic names - Spark, Frost Bolt, Fire Bolt, and Arc Lash - are fine, but each one has 3 upgraded options - Enhanced, Flickering, and Glinting - and the adjectives aren't consistent or even visually displayed in the same order. The OCD in me + the desire for useful/descriptive/distinct spell names is a little put-off by this, although maybe I'm overreacting. I chose frost bolt.
8. These beginner-level spells cost... zero... mana? Frost bolt is free, and it has a pretty fast cast rate (and, of course, it slows down enemies, eventually freezing them). No wonder the game auto-binded frost bolt to my left-click, rather than my first spell slot. By auto-binding my frost bolt to my left-click, the game completely removed my melee weapon attack, and I don't actually know how to put it back, in case I want to actually whack things with a weapon or alternate between a melee weapon attack and a ranged cold attack. I guess I'll just spam my ranged cold attack, but removing an attack option for a player feels odd to me.
9. I hit level 3 pretty fast, thanks to the weird quest boosting me through the first half of level 2 and finding a basement that has more/stronger enemies that I can kill very fast/safely with my frost bolt.
10. The game doesn't lag for me at all (not even playing on a super fancy computer, just a standard laptop with browser minimized / other programs running), and it's actually really fun to stutter-step as a sorcerer firing frost bolts at a group of enemies. Combat feels good.
11. Went from level 3 to level 4 very fast, purely from fighting fairly strong enemies and without any weird quest aid (the way it should be imo). Combat feels very good now, especially as a ranged/kiting damage dealer, and now I'm thinking that the weird auto-rebinding of my attack skill from melee weapon to frost bolt ended up being a better design choice than I had initially thought.
12. I miss having stat/attribute points, where I could level up things like strength or dexterity. Allocating just a new skill point with each level up is bearable.
13. I just realized that there's no stamina meter. That's awesome.
14. Just fought some old-school Fallen and Fallen Shamans. They look and sound amazing.
15. Beat a simple dungeon boss and ended my hour just under level 5. Definitely looking forward to playing more.

the seamless loading stuff doesnt work for me. Tried to enter the next zone and kept on getting rubber banded back. Decided to go to char select screen then got the "316719" error. RIP. Really not a fan of this seamless zone loading stuff if it won't work. Would rather just have loading screens if they can't fix this
re: appearances - there's a transmog / armor glamour system where you can change the appearance of your gear based on what you've collected. So, your "naked" appearance can be used if you so choose. I personally like helmet off for example
re: spells - there's resource generating spells and resource spending spells. I suppose it seems a bit strange to have totally free spells but it's a tried and true system

I don't think they can troll or steal kills. Loot is client sided (everyone gets their own loot). Fighting with others makes things notably easier - I don't think basic encounters scale to player number. Did some random events with players and they helped a lot. Status effects (e.g. Vulnerable) make party play valuable. Will have to see how world bosses scale
However, I got a bunch of lag involved with multiplayer. Very notable stutters, rubber banding, fps drops. It is kinda fun to see other people around though, and emote. I think if the technical and server issues are fixed I'd enjoy the open world system. However, having all these server issues for the early access beta doesn't really fill me with confidence. It seems extremely likely that release will be horrible in these areas

I checked the beta for a couple of hours. First hour was a queue, in the second hour I realized that there is no point in playing Diablo 3 remastered, when Diablo 2 remastered already exists. Already refunded the game. I might come back after release, if the end game is on the level of Lost Ark, but without the pay to win stuff. For 90 euro and the full arsenal of MTX, this game is meh.

A continuation from my last Diablo 4 post (last night), now that I’ve had more time to play: + Show Spoiler +1. Last night’s queue time (6 PM Eastern time) was around 60 minutes, but this morning’s queue time was less than 1 minute (at 7:15 AM Eastern time), and this afternoon at 2 PM Eastern time had a < 1 minute queue time too, granting immediate access into the game. After about another half hour of playing (1.5 hours total), I completed the single-player-only starting area and entered the main city of Kyovashad, complete with a waypoint, shops, and stash. This is where I also started to experience lag spikes for the first time, perhaps since there are other players here, and the pathing issues of my character still persisted.
2. Picked up frozen orb at level 5. Seems like a fair skill – hitting a ton of enemies at the expense of a lot of mana – and a solid contrast to my free frozen bolt. Mana regeneration is very fast in this game. Cast two frozen orbs, then cast a few free frozen bolts while my mana simultaneously recharges, then cast two more frozen orbs if needed. By level 10, I had maxed out my frozen orb and found a legendary staff that doubled all my spell damage.
3. Not needing a scroll to create a town portal or to identify items is nice.
4. Large inventory size and customizable/expandable stash are both good improvements, although the images for the actual gear look pretty basic, drab, and uninspiring. I kind of miss each item and armor and weapon having their own different sizes and shapes, even if that meant that my inventory filled up faster; I wonder if I’ll easily get accustomed to everything being standardized as the same size in my inventory. As of right now, the gear seems pretty boring and the look of each item is completely forgettable.
5. The areas outside of town are occasionally laggy for me, even when soloing, to the point where I had to close my other programs so that only Diablo 4 was running. This solved about 80% of my lag issues.
6. It’s pretty cool to naturally encounter other players completing quests or attacking a bunch of strong enemies, and getting to join in. I also teamed up with two friends of mine – I’m a sorc, and they’re a barb and a rogue – and I was surprised that the lag wasn’t unbearable for us, even when we’re all blowing things up at the same time, on the same screen.
7. I was originally worried that it would be hard to find my two allies or for us to be in the same place at the same time, but Diablo 4 does a great job of keeping us together: Adding a friend to the party immediately warps them into your version of the world (once they accept), and then each party member has their own unique, permanent town portal by the waypoint, that's separate from the standard "I opened a temporary town portal to go home". These unique, personal town portals allow you to always warp to the exact location of your ally at any given time, so you can always rejoin them whenever you want. This is excellent.
8. We’re exploring a lot of areas and completing a lot of objectives despite being notified that quests aren’t actually being completed (like defeating Neyrelle’s mom). We’re consistently receiving notifications that certain areas and quests aren’t counting for us because we’re “not yet eligible”. It’s very confusing, but I assume it’s because it’s the beta and that these messages will all be removed once the game releases.
9. Maxed out hydra is also pretty awesome, and the three of us are around level 20 so far. The last 6 hours have been really fun – tons to explore. Monsters are getting harder and smarter too. No connection issues, no queue / wait time issues, just some lag spikes and the pathing problems. Loading times between zones are also extremely fast.

From watching streams I love how "meaty" monsters are. They actually take some time to kill on difficulty II. But watching a dude play I've noticed that he's always capped at 100 mana and the same mana regen speed. He specced into glinting icebolt to help with mana regen, but it is still kind of wierd seeing him be Out Of Mana after casting 1 hydra and 2 fireballs... Is this the intended design to deliberately slow down combat and give it more gravitas, or will the player later be able to have a higher mana pool and more regen? Right now the most manacost efficient spell seems to be hands-down hydra...

Once things stabilize you can spec into more intelligence.

It's really hard to judge how time to kill, pace of combat, and item progression will be until later.
Personally I also like the combat, but I'm pretty pessimistic on it remaining like that. I expect it to be very spammy and quick like most ARPGs tend towards in endgame. That's not a bad thing for me personally anyways
