that $500 million is product shipped.. not sold. many months later ATVI bundled Destiny with Hearthstone claiming the sum total of both franchises brought in $850 million over the course of a year. Considering Hearthstone was built by a small staff in a "throwback to the garage programmer days of the 80s" and Destiny had 87 bazillion employees working on it for 5 years that's not a good game to be bundled along with.
ATVI's worst 10 week stretch on the stock market occurred starting from September 10,2014 right after Destiny was released.
ATVI's unwillingness to provide concrete financial #s indicates that the game has underperformed relative to expectations up to this point.

kinda reminds me of Borderlands skill trees.
500m product shipped is sold to a company like "ATVI", they got their money. And comparing it to Hearthstone is not really relevant. Hearthstone and any King game is going to be a shit ton more efficent in $ brought in per employee but that doesnt mean the AAA titles aren't worth doing.
Looking at all those other metrics posted, the CEO of Activision said that it had great sales, it was profitable Day 1, biggest new franchise launch, its a billion dollar franchise, incredible engagement, I think its fair to say it did great.
Don't engage him.
Are people still salty about the consumable shaders thing? Or did it turn out that they drop frequently enough not to be an issue
I don't know if people are super mad about it. It seems that the shaders are not removed if you unequip the item, which used to happen(or people claim). I think the biggest problem people have is that it is really hard to go and find a dope shader and work toward it. It was really easy to go to a vendor, pick a shader and see how awesome you would look if you had it.
There was a fun part of the community really into shader fashion, since they are all associated with different factions. I think they wish there was a little more structure and a way to see all the shaders that exist.
Ah gotcha. Yeah I'm a strong believer in having a "test wardrobe" or some similar feature in any game with cosmetics. Not only helps players sort out what they have and what/where they need to go farm, but it helps sell in-game shop cosmetics too lol. Was just curious because I had a friend that felt pretty strongly about it at launch but Bungie seemed to imply that they'd start dropping like candy and it wouldn't really be a big deal.
Destiny is certainly one of the games I wish had a more robust cosmetic system. Also that was one of the things I disliked about the hard reset of Destiny 2, was theres so many dope weapon and armor design that we wont see unless they go out of their way to bring it back.
But yea, I dont think its that big of a deal.Seems way overblown. And if thats the thing people are bitching about this late after launch, thats probably a good thing.

I'd have to assume with its DLC and the like, its one of their 8 billion dollar franchises. Its not proof, but I think given how much they talk up and market Destiny, it'd be the case.
you know what is fucking hilarious about that quote? at the time of that quote Overwatch didn't even exist. And it became ATVI's "next billion dollar franchise".
if any franchise becomes a "billion dollar franchise" ATVI talks about it.. a lot. they don't keep it a secret. And Overwatch became a billion dollar franchise in 10 months.
no such announcement for Destiny though. so no, Destiny is not a billion dollar franchise. If it eventually becomes a billion dollar franchise we'll hear about it. Same with Hearthstone, Skylanders, etc.

Diablo didnt get such an announcement and it only became a billion dollar franchise fairly recently (last few years when its a 20+ year old franchise) iicr.

that's a good point! however, Kotick yaps more about Activision titles financial performance than Blizzard titles though. I don't think WoW got an announcement either. Activision franchises always get the billion dollar announcement ... Guitar Hero, Skylanders, CoD all got the billion dollar franchise announcement. Guitar Hero even got a "2 billion dollar announcement".
anyhow, it'll be interesting to see if we get an announcement about revenue for D2 this week. my guess is its around the $330 million mark.
Bungie is saving us from those evil Kekistanis or is it Kekistanites? or Kekistanians?
our clan Avatar in various Blizzard games has a giant "K" in it and kinda sorta looks like the Kekistan flag... i hope they don't call it offensive and remove it from our Blizzard games.
the "K" stands for Kramerica though. hopefully, they'll understand.

There are two issues at play here:
A: Destiny always seems to be a hot minute away from jacking us all with micro transaction, but they manage to keep it reasonable. But the threat is real. Every time they added things to the real money store, people responded like this.
B: The shader system has previews and doesn't seem to be that bad, but its hard to know what is out there in the world. I'm sure it will be figured out. But this game is a big action figure game, where you dress up your dope hero is the flying space wizard armor and roll with your buddies to kill robots across time. People want to know how to look fly and that system tells you shit.
So raid has been cleared. Here's the kicker one of the items dropped is a token, you have to collect a hundred of said tokens in order to get a Emperor's Banner. Whatever that is.
