Bungie’s decision to cut an estimated 100 jobs from its staff of about 1,200 followed dire management warnings earlier this month of a sharp drop in the popularity of its flagship video game Destiny 2. Just two weeks ago, executives at the Sony-owned game developer told employees that revenue was running 45% below projections for the year, according to people who attended the meeting. Chief Executive Officer Pete Parsons pinned the big miss on weak player retention for Destiny 2, which has faced a poor reception since the release of its latest expansion, Lightfall. The next expansion, The Final Shape, was getting good — not great feedback — and management told those present that they planned to push back the release to June 2024 from February, according the people, who asked not to be identified because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly. The additional time would give developers a chance to improve the product. In the meantime, Parsons told staff Bungie would be cutting costs, such as for travel, as well as implementing salary and hiring freezes, the people said. Everyone would have to work together to weather the storm, he said, leaving employees feeling determined to do whatever was needed to get revenue back up. But on Monday morning the news got worse: Dozens of staffers woke up to mysterious 15-minute meetings that had been placed on their calendars, which they soon learned were part of a mass layoff. Bungie laid off around 8% of its employees, according to documentation reviewed by Bloomberg. Bungie didn’t respond to requests for comment. Employees who were let go will receive at least three months of severance and three months of Bungie-paid COBRA health insurance, although other benefits, such as expense reimbursements, ended Monday, sending some staff racing to submit their receipts. Laid-off staffers will also receive prorated bonuses, although those who were on a vesting schedule following Sony Group Corp.’s acquisition of Bungie in January 2022 will lose any shares that weren’t vested as of next month. The layoffs are part of a larger money-saving initiative at Sony’s PlayStation unit, which has also cut employees at studios such as Naughty Dog, Media Molecule and its San Mateo office. TD Cowen analyst Doug Creutz wrote in a report Monday that “events over the last few days lead us to believe that PlayStation is undergoing a restructuring.” PlayStation president Jim Ryan announced last month that he plans to resign. Many of the layoffs at Bungie affected the company’s support departments, such as community management and publishing. Remaining Bungie staff were informed that some of those areas will be outsourced moving forward. Source

"some other areas will be outsourced" it is nice that Bungie is informing its employees well in advance that their jobs could disappear. I bought the original Destiny2 campaign off of Humble Bungle for $12 USD. It was really solid fun. A few years later it was taken//removed from their live servers and I could not play it. Major rip off man. I'm not buying the "Final Shape" until it is under $15 because I'm concerned it could disappear in a year or two and I will have wasted my money.

Hilarious how ATVI said they were not happy with the revenue from D2 in its final year with ATVI. Bungie disagreed saying they were happy with the revenue. Bungie then proceeded to add 50,000 microtransactions to the game. Bungie's ACTIONS and Bungie's WORDS are two different things. Bungie's actions are CONGRUENT with ATVI's dissatisfaction about revenue. Bungie has painted Destiny2 into a corner. The IN GAME advertising is oppressive. It is everywhere. It gives the game a certain feeling of desperation on the part of Bungie. Its fucking hilarious. Marathon better be a smash hit.

This has been one of the most difficult weeks in our studio’s history, as we’ve parted ways with people we respect and admire. We’ve spent this week supporting one another, including those who are at the studio, as well as friends and colleagues who no longer are. We want to acknowledge the feedback and concerns you have about Lightfall and recent Seasons, as well as your responses to the reveal of The Final Shape. We know we have lost a lot of your trust. Destiny needs to surprise and delight. We haven’t done this enough and that’s going to change. To us the path forward is clear: We need to make The Final Shape an unforgettable Destiny experience. We want to build something that will be regarded alongside the best games we’ve ever made – a fitting culmination that honors the journey we’ve been on together for the past ten years. Forsaken, The Witch Queen, and The Taken King – these are the standard bearers we aim to live up to. We are intensely focused on exceeding your expectations for The Final Shape. Destiny 2 has more than 650 dedicated teammates pouring all their energy and expertise into delivering this epic moment and its subsequent Episodes. In the weeks ahead, you’ll be hearing more from us about what’s next on the short-term horizon, beginning with our next Season in late November. Afterwards, we’ll begin to unpack our team’s bigger, bolder, and brighter vision for The Final Shape, as well as the bridge we plan to build to take us all out of this Darkness and into the Light. See you starside, The Destiny 2 Dev Team Source

“Offering some amount of Eververse content for Silver-only is part of ensuring we are able to fund our ability to keep creating and maintaining Destiny and supporting the team that makes Destiny,” said Bungie. https://www.polygon.com/2019/12/6/20998755/destiny-2-season-of-dawn-eververse-bright-dust-store-items-sale we are 5+ years into the development of Marathon with no end in sight. Bungie was hiring in August and three months later lays off long time employees that include employees among the first 35 hired in the 1990s. This is intentional employee churn. We're all one big happy family amirite?

It is impossible to know exactly when things happened because Bungie lies a lot.

if the first episode is literally your characters first intro to Osiris reflection, like CoO, and the is whole god damn episode revolves a sentient one, Bungie could have literally done what I suggested FIVE fucking years ago when the Witness ships started to tear reality etc. and form. Thus have another Osiris emerge, whether it be in the Infinite Forest where a Vex reality emerged where he was the only Guardian that was alive that said world was conquered, and he was younger or w/e. Or have the Witness ships start to slowly activate and effect the surroundings or w/e. He would be in a a crashed ship or something but he would have no idea where he, and would have a different ghost, and would have no idea how he got there who we were, but he would have some idea who the others were but wondering how they were alive. Boom no need for recasting etc. Gods please lets these leaks be false. Please.... The damn Sundial season was a perfect moment do exactly such a storyline... hell they had the Cabal taking part ffs.

I honestly think Bungie is basically about to shelve the Destiny IP. Just like they did the Halo IP after a decade of working it for a decade. Guess what turns 10 next year? Destiny. Now the question what is Sony going, if anything, about it. I mean why let such a beloved and valuable IP whither on the vine like is happening now.

The death threats and doxxing are 100% on Bungie. They fucked up large. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSJDyAIOk2c On November 28 2023 02:48 {CC}StealthBlue wrote: I mean why let such a beloved and valuable IP whither on the vine like is happening now. is it beloved? i barely understand the story at all. I've played Halo 5% as much as Destiny and yet I have a far better grasp on teh Halo story line. The Destiny2 Red War Campaign was so nice and simple. Same with Foresaken. Since then the stories have been so abstract and convoluted.

Deleting Red War and Foresaken was a bad move. They could've created a 2nd EXE to play those campaigns. I mean Anything but deleting them forever when people bought a boxed product off of a retail shelf. Now, the casual real world player no longer trusts Bungie at all. When you buy a retail boxed product you are expecting to be able to play it until the cartridge breaks or the CD gets wrecked.
