I played XCX and XC2, enjoyed both. XCX ranks among the best games i’ve ever played tbh, salvaged my Wii U purchase by itself.
XC2 was just good. I did enjoy the combat system so thats good to hear.

I didn't like the combat system of XC2 either but I thought the rest of the game was ok. I did enjoy XC1 enough to double dip and get the definitive edition on the Switch. That's partly because I originally played it on the 3DS and it felt like the kind of game that needed to be experienced on a bigger screen.

So yeah, anybody who has played it, please share details about the combat.

Some negative information about Pokemon S/V. Even my RPG has level scaling for the non-linear "complete these 8 dungeons in any order" area of my game! I hope they fix this. https://www.gamesradar.com/pokemon-scarlet-and-violets-open-gym-challenge-wont-include-level-scaling-and-that-sucks/?fbclid=IwAR2VTH2Qf1VhllGX4m2v2jjv1nhaHYVhp0B3X91Epq9IXZrGA-omW-LvMjU

If that's the case, I'll still consider playing the game (in the intended gym leader order), especially since there are apparently other additional parts/stories of the game, separate from the gyms, that are actually non-linear in some meaningful sense, but it's definitely disappointing. And it's really not that hard to proportionally scale up boss battles based on how many gym badges a player already has. This just seems a little lazy.

What the fucks the point to choosing gyms if you're just going to get level-fucked by not going in correct enough order?

Baffling

Yes, scaling up the gym battles based on number of badges a player has would an easy solution to it. Evolving the gym leaders' pokemon if they are at a certain level shouldn't be too difficult to do either.

I'm still on the fence though. I didn't like raid battles as the endgame of Sword/Shield. Earlier versions would at least have some version of battle tower/chateau/mansion whatever for me to farm the TMs and items I want and level up my pokemon as well. I don't want raid battles as an endgame again and the main story line of pokemon is just too short to justify it over other rpgs.

I highly recommend playing the free demo for The DioField Chronicle, especially if you like tactics-based / Fire Emblem / Triangle Strategy combat-type games. The battle mechanics feel especially intuitive and flexible, the art is great, the overworld exploration is a nice change of pace, and the story seems promising. It's been a while since a demo has convinced me to pre-order a game, but that's exactly what just happened; the full game is coming out September 22nd. It's also a game that plays extremely well in both docked mode and handheld mode on the Switch

So it's a little amusing to me given that I despised 1's combat system - extremely inflexible and the holy trinity was so strong that it was like doing backflips making other characters even remotely viable. Ultimately I beat the game using Shulk/Dun/Seven, but there's no doubt the starting 3 is the most optimal and far-away the best setup you can have.

By contrast I thought 2's combat system was OK other than the stupid QTE's - it was still a little inflexible in strange ways (blade combo elements etc.) but the ability to change roles (other than the stupid gacha-locking-to-chars restriction) felt very nice and so I was able to mess around with combat and the likes more. It was also a nice bonus that the driver combo was no longer a necessity to damage things like it was with the faced ones in 1, and so on and so forth. It was mostly the peripheral restrictions around the combat (hard to shuffle blades around to optimize certain characters, etc.) that bothered me, on top of some of the lack of QOL for mercs, the blade gacha, blade combo restrictions, etc.

3 is like we went from SNES in 1, Playstation in 2, and then we're PC gaming now or something with how much further along I feel the game is in terms of combat, customization, etc. There's a lot I like way more about 3 overall than 2, but specifically with regards to combat, you do now have the ability to customize two button palettes instead of 1 (directional + abxy buttons) along with the ability to combine the buttons to do fusion attacks. You no longer have gacha for things and things are no longer tied to each character, but rather you have crazy amounts of flexibility and customization. Similar to FE3H you also unlock skills/passives by leveling classes for each character, so you can set up builds for each character and then swap them out as you see fit depending on what you've decided to unlock. Also, most mindblowing (and this is a bit spoiler) is that you do get 6+1 party members instead of 3, which along with the ridiculous number of classes makes for a lot of customization and viable builds and so on. It's also super easy to switch between characters during the fight as well, so you can honestly do a lot of Tales-like micro and comboing and so on. You can do the holy trinity of 2 tank 2 attack 2 heal but you can also mix it up, and some of the classes are weird hybrids like I've got a "healer" that does physical melee attacks and heals a little inside the arc of one of their swings... makes them more of a DPS character that also happens to heal (mostly themself). In conjunction to the larger party size, you do get into some bigger melees as well, like 7v7 and so on, which is also absolutely chaotic but wonderful because it's a type of AGGRO GOING EVERYWHERE OH GOD melee that we've never been able to experience before... frankly arguably even in most "real-time" action games like this. There's no QTEs or anything, it's literally just find weapon(s) and playstyles you like, build them up, mash the skills and such together, and do that 6 times and switch around as you see fit/feel like. I love it.

Aside from the combat though, the game itself is just very woah. I guess it depends on what types of games you like, but it feels way more exploration-friendly in the sense that I literally find myself going into a new area and just mapping and exploring everything before moving on. And these areas feel even bigger than in 2, which is amazing.

I see. I'm more of a turn-based gamer and I tend to shy away from high execution real time games. I even shy away from moderate execution real time games. I finished 1 using Melia/Dun/Seven. I think that team is great and I really enjoyed playing with it. I agree that the damage restriction against mechon/faced ones is a stupid game mechanic but I'm pretty sure magic users aren't affected to the same degree (I think it's only a damage 50% reduction) and I'm also pretty sure Seven is not affected at all. From what I remember, a team with the starting 3 chars is good for beating the main story but other comps are much better for the optional encounters and are far more efficient at going through the game. I believe most players prefer Dun over Reyn as their tank too.

My biggest issue with the combat of 2 is similar to my issue with FF13. In order to reward players for doing a combo, each layer of the combat system had to deal significantly more damage than the previous layer. That meant almost all mobs, even normal ones, are huge damage sponges. Your auto-attacks and the first layer of skills barely do any noticeable damage to them. Even the non-boss fights take way too long since you need to build up a combo on almost all of them. If an enemy survives your combo with ~20% or so hp remaining, you won't even be able to kill it until you've built up your next combo. It's been a while since I played the game but I remember exploration being a slog because battles against trash mobs take way too long.

I did hear plenty of good things about 3. Even though I'm still unsold on the combat, reviewers say that almost everything else is an upgrade from the previous games.

After playing through FFX again on Switch, I decided to replay another game on Switch that I haven't played in 20 years: Paper Mario (for the N64). Such an amazing game, really holds up well imo, especially as a handheld!

Just bought Temtem... I wonder if I'll like it as much as I like Pokemon.

Edit: Not even close. Waste of money.

It is the original series that Persona is a spin-off of. Way lighter on story than Persona, closer to Pokemon in terms of amount of story content. Much darker story and themes. You're collecting "demons", which are based on superstitions and mythological and religious and sometimes historical figures the world over.

SMT 5 was released last year. SMT 3: Nocturne was released 15+ years ago and received a port I think last year as well.
