Can I also say I enjoy the new training system. While if you want the bonus you may have to sub out all 6 of the suggested pokemon its still much easier, less punishing, and waaay easier to get credit towards the training medal (I assume you have to sweep the whole gym to get win credit). Also seems less resource intensive.
A wild Blastoise appears, woo!
Well the flip side for me is that outside of the nests everything is a drowsee, rattata, or pidgey with the occasional Gastly, Jynx, or common water type.
The spawning in my area (a city) is really odd, it's very sparse for being a dense city, only a few small areas in the city really have good spawn density, and outside of nests & water areas the spawn variety is pretty crap. The patch where they removed a bunch of spawn locations really did a number on the area. I think they nerfed natural spawns because of the buddy system, or at least it certainly felt that way in my city.
Lately the overwhelming majority of interesting thing I've caught have been in the suburbs where I'm seeing much higher spawn density + more variety (things like water types + grass types + nidorans + the fairies instead of spawns that are almost 100% drowsees).

So this morning I started off only having caught Squirtles. Just caught two Blastoises at work within 4 hours. One is low cp and 58% IV, the other is even lower IV but nearly max level. So not ideal but still a crazy day!
Two pikachu's in the same location. I might have spoken too soon complaining about no nests. There's usually some stuff there (bugs and birds for the most part) but pretty nice streak today.

Last time I fulled up my inventory I have over 250 normal potions. I just dump them on defenders that come back to me.

Over the course of the week it will shift from potions to balls as I do gym stuff and then one day I'll go to an all biome park and just sit there under quad-lures for 5-7 hours. Because of that it will switch from red balls to pots to keep me going throughout the week.

Games is basically dead in my million pop city

With the gym update, a lot of the gyms that I pass have been strongholds. Those level 7+ either stay high, or are subsequently replaced by another 7+ team. Not really my cup of tea, since I kinda made my gold in sniping level 3 gyms, but maybe I'll get the hang of it once I get enough resources to field a decent Pokemon that has a higher CP (and overall competence) than a 1212 meh Flareon.
I just don't frequent the nests nearby enough (that's not city trash, I'M LOOKING AT YOU PIDGEY AND RATTATA, AND THE OCCASIONAL SPEAROW). Maybe with a bit more meandering I'll get there.

spearow suck ass still.

Try to find areas near you that have decent turnover. There's a park near where I live that has 3 gyms that you can access without getting out of the car and walking a couple minutes. They change hands multiple times a day.

I found a 400cp 89% IV growlith on the bus today and turned him into this beast:

Also was looking through my graveyard of vaporeons and found a level 14 one with 98 IV and water pulse, I realized its actually a good defender moveset and maxed him out. I went from about 230k stardust to 40k today maxing my vaporeon and arcneon

I live in a metropolitan area, so gyms and stops are a dime a dozen. Still doesn't stop gyms from being more fortified than my cereal for several days in a row (and when they get dethroned, the next fellas stay just as long). At level 23, with most of my hauls being city trash, I don't have any real meat that I can use for offense, never mind a sturdy defensive one.
But I'm hoping to find a decent Eggsecute since they're fairly common. Or maybe a Blastoise once I get enough candies (I just caught a Wartortle, but its stats are garbage, so I'm planning to use a Squirtle). Then I can stand sorta equal to all of the gyms that seem to be populated by 3k+ Dragonites (and crew).

Fortunately I found a 93% 600 cp one.

I dream of the day that a game that consistently updates and improves itself over time doesn't get a response of "Well, better than nothing."
Anyway. Cool event coming.

Gonna get me that Gengar I've been workin' on. And probably up my outside cardio time in response to increased candy rates from the buddy. :D

Might actually be the time to bust out that dratini as a buddy if it earns 4x the candy. That's nearly 1km pokemon rate.

The idea of an event is exciting.
The fact that the things that make up like 75% of my spawns are going to become more common is frustrating though.
