(only watched start of game tho but it was a big difference, maybe too much lol) also i will say most people i've watched fucking suck at using their ATBs on time, so it's absolutely not as "button mashy" as you'd think. you button mash or hold a direction to raise your ATB, but they fill up kinda fast. i heard you can use hotkeys to perform abilities too which is good. the ATB fills up very slowly if you don't press anything, but you can't automate it without switching to classic/easy mode, which also nerfs everything to the ground. probably i'd play easy mode even if it is too easy, just because life is too short to spend 5 minutes killing a random mob thanks to whoever designed FF13. but i will say the combat seems busier than "button mashing" and i haven't seen anyone play it without constantly tanking their ATB bars (but maybe they just cbf or are mega shit, who knows). i will also say that it seems like some enemy attacks are dodgeable or mitigatable, to what extent i'm not sure, but this would be something else that makes combat busier that people i watched aren't really doing. lastly, i say battles take too long, but it's not clear to me or the people i watched how the stagger system works. it's possible battles are much quicker if you know how to trigger staggers more effectively. basically, the combat seems to be really busy and the only concern i'd have is if classic/easy mode really was too stupidly easy if i decided to play it

+ Show Spoiler + So it seems Square is going to change the entire design of the planet from the start of the game cinematic. Everything is so barren compared to the grasslands and forests from the original. Though I could be wrong seeing how this is only part 1.

The area around midgar was pretty barren in the original. thats likely what they were showing.

1 - dialogue choices + Show Spoiler + been playing a few interactive movies lately and it just occured that square didn't chose to put many interactive choices in this game. they could have spent a lot of time/money on adding this as a feature of the game, but they didn't. it would have been fun and a big talking point if there were more dialogue choices. 2 - spoiler about the story in the future games + Show Spoiler + edit: rewrote this on reddit edit2: they deleted my reddit post without comment. anyway here it is: warning, the following is end-game and future-game spoilers and speculation: + Show Spoiler + The new story of FF7 is actually genius. I am, like, shocked right now, as it finally dawned on me what they are doing with the story. At first I thought it was pretty crappy, but after realizing a few things my world has just been turned upside-down. The following refers to not only the end of the current game, but also to what I think will happen in the future games. Therefore, do not read if you want to be kept in the dark about how the story will progress. Ultimately, however, there is no spoiler - and that is the genius of what they are doing. It finally dawned on me that the ghosts are not just a trashy throw-away second story to fill out the game. For a long time, that's just what I thought they were. A low-motivation, pretty trashy way to lengthen the game and add a second protagonist to keep people busy for longer. It's not the case. Square is not "retelling" the story of FF7. Instead they are making a version of it where alternative timelines are an actuality that exists. If you fight against the ghosts then you are able to deviate from the original story of FF7 and into an alternative timeline. This became finally clear to me when you see Biggs waking up at the end of the game. with this, they are telling us, "If you fight against the ghosts, then the story will change." The fact that Biggs survives is a clear message to us that it will be POSSIBLE that Aeris also survives. In addition, if you fail against the ghosts, then the timeline will revert back to the original game. We are told this when Wedge survives, but later the ghosts come for him and kill him by throwing him off the Shinra building, reverting his destiny back to the original game. In conclusion, the ghosts are not just a cheap Square filler plot with no real purpose other than to lengthen the game for the sake of an additional villain with dumb motivations. The plot of the game is now "The story of changing the plot of FF7 by fighting against the original timeline". The genius of this is that it resolves the issue that everyone already knows the plot of FF7, and those who don't already know it WILL know it between now and when the next 1-2 games are released within the next 1-3 years. Instead, all of us are back in the mystery, together, asking the same question as one another: does Aeris live? Flashback to the FF7 "commercial" where the otaku is saying that both new fans and old fans alike will be united by this release. This is what he really meant. Actually. Fucking. Good. edit: i figured out why they removed the epic fmv where + Show Spoiler + the train spirals around midgar when they're going home after blowing up a reactor. it's because in the previous scene jessie shows cloud the blueprint of the city and you can see that the train she says they are currently on circles the city but doesn't actually descend the pillar. still don't think that was the best decision though

Saving Zack, multiple timelines/universes. Is it due in part because who you kill in the original? Who knows but it is very easy they can fuck this up rather than stay the original story path. Don't save Aerith. Don't change character fates etc.

+ Show Spoiler + on the one hand, it's kinda cool not knowing where the story will go. On the other, I would be perfectly happy with a simple remake of the original. Also hope they don't save Aerith, it's pretty much my most impactful moment in gaming history, would be a shame to see it scrapped.

Seems like they set it up so they can do anything they want, since they beat the arbiter of fate. It's like a whole new timeline now, just as the timeline where Zack survived. I wonder if the timelines can merge, or why did Zack see the Whispers over Midgar :/. So confusing, I really would have been happy without any of that stuff ![]()

In the original at first we (at least I did) thought, that Cloud is a strong Ex-SOLDIER. And the story revealed that that wasn't exactly what he was and many memories were more the story of Zack! So I'm not sure what to believe at this point! Also maybe it gets more "brutal" with the "iconic scene". Like, that we will fail to change fate! So the whole "loosing his mind" story line will be more intense! Well, we maybe know in 5 years or so ![]()

wedge is not alive. he was thrown from the shinra building by the ghosts near the end. personally i'm very excited about what they did. since i thought the ghosts were trashy until i realized they are going full fan-fiction and saving aeris and whatnot. i love ff7 fanfic. there was this one where cloud and zack and sephy were all living in a house together and..... of course, failing to save aeris would be predictable IMO, but who knows. i do think it's unlikely that they go for multiple endings. they don't have any experience doing that, right. unless the next game is the last or they make it the main theme for the final game. the biggest question for me is if the zack bit was just fan service or are we seeing more of him. also will the ghosts have more lore to them? will they continue to fuck with the party in part 2? (i assume so, it'd be kinda weird to just forget about their existence from now on without any attempt at explanation).
