no it was not, a traditional publishing model was used.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petroglyph_Games

look at the start of the thread. calling Petroglyph "the guys who made C&C" is somewhat deceptive.
a few Petroglyph guys worked in some capacity on a few C&C projects. The top guys making C&C's best and most popular games were LONG GONE by the time 2003 rolled around.

there are more people playing C&C:RA2 (2000) than Grey Goo(2015).
there are more people C&C3:Kane's Wrath (2008) than Grey Goo(2015).

the most important people behind those 2 games (Dustin Browder, Greg BLack, Tim Morten) are working at Blizzard.

I've never ever heard Blizzard whisper a single word during promos about all the ex-C&C guys they got. But, GreyBox shouts this tag-line from the mountain tops.

I would say Grey Goo had an above average release for an RTS game

I've never seen a seemingly solid game crash and burn so hard. An average RTS game release would be something like Total War or Civ series in my mind.

Even Planetary Annihilation did so much better

Paradox Titles, Civ and Total War are top of the line, competitors against Blizzard RTS titles. They are the golden standard everything else aspires to. Above average is something like Supreme Commander that is still played to this day. Grey Goo has decent chances to end up there still, it is a pretty solid game. Its chances to compete with the greats is of course gone.

I wouldnt consider them competitors. Those games' replayability comes from conquest/diplomacy versus AIs, not Starcraft where the replayablity comes from competitive multiplayer and argubably custom games

you have to wonder how much longer GreyBox will pay Steam to host Grey Goo on their servers.

I actually do not think that the fact that the GreyGoo devs were from C&C and they were transparent about it is even close to the reason why Grey Goo isn't as popular as these previous two games, it is because of how it runs, the balance, the limited support, and the mistakes that were made. The game still needs a lot of work...SC2 wasn't released with replays, but SC2 was more stable they GG and better in every aspect basically.

SC2 was released with replays. SC1 didn't have replays. SC2 didnt have chatrooms.

I think a lot of things could have been implemented post release. For me though, the units felt way too clunky and unresponsive for a game that has a lot of symmetry among the three races, in terms of counters, roles of units, etc.

Blizzard's brand is so strong; Starcraft's brand is so strong they don't need to yap away about C&C to sell copies.

i was not implying any cause and effect in my comments.

if you want to get into cause and effect i will say this:
the best former C&C guys are working for Blizzard because Blizzard hires the absolute best.
GreyBox got the leftovers that Blizzard didn't want.

The Blizzard RTS Team is better than the team that made Grey Goo.
This is why SC2 > Grey Goo.

It is really clear now that Grey Goo was released because they ran out of money. Really smart game designers do not put themselves in this position. They find companies like Blizzard with the financial where-with-all to fully back their projects.

Sometimes you don't really have that luxury and you have to take whatever publisher will be willing to work with you.

And working on a new ip also allows for more creativity.
Blizzard games are very well made, but not exactly creative.
Especially all these expansions, which are nothing more than glorified patches.
If you think you're good, you suck. If you think you suck, you're getting better.

Blizzard's expansions are their biggest strength as a company.
WoW, SC1, WC3, D2, and D3 really came into their own as games once their expansions came out.

Also, 1/2 of Blizzard's RTS fan base gets the game for the campaign. SC1:BW had 25+ missions. WC3:FT had 20+ missions and the biggest heel turn in RTS history. SC2:HotS had 20+ missions. You do not get this many custom missions with a tightly integrated storyline in any glorified patch.

as for multiplayer: VanillaSC1 and Brood War are totally different games. same with WC3:RoC and WC3:FT. Hardly the stuff of a glorified patch.

Expansions allow the games biggest fans to dig deeper into whatever aspect of the game they enjoy most. Blizzard's ability to refine their initial retail offering is the best in the industry.

it'll be interesting to see if an expansion is made for Grey Goo.

The devs haven't given up on it, so I think they still feel like it has a chance. I sure hope so, because the game itself is solid enough.

Well I don't play single player - so wouldn't know bout that.
But they basically force a multiplayer only guy like myself to pay ~35 euros (at least) for 2 new units to my faction and some tweaks here and there. (talking about sc2)

I have not played the vanilla versions of wc3/sc, so can't speak of those. (should have made a less bold statement - I guess)

Any way, my post was more about the e-sport nature of rts games today.
Like even on a game as Grey Goo people are speaking about e-sports... why?
Hardly anyone plays it... worry about making it a fun game instead... so you know... more people will start playing it.
Personally I would love a 4th faction in a sc2 expansion... remember Yuri's revenge expansion for ra2?
Completely not balanced, but oh so fun... that's what rts these days is missing.

And that's why we need publishers other than Blizzard to succeed, ones that are willing to do crazy things and not worry all the time about their game being 100% balanced. If that's even possible now with all these players who cry about balance whenever they lose, see that in Grey Goo as well.

Ps I don't blame Blizzard for this, it's obviously working for them.
Just saying the fun/crazy part of rts has gotten lost in this e-sports era.
If you think you're good, you suck. If you think you suck, you're getting better.
