It isn't relying on being propped up as competitive. SC2 was basically a competitive game and not a single thing more. Overwatch looks to be a blast to play. I think the game would will get popular. Not sure about esports, but I think the game itself will intrigue people. Over time, people will keep coming back with the addition of new heroes/content (assuming they dont sell heroes, if they do that could either turn a lot of people) On October 30 2015 07:58 Aylear wrote: http://www.twitch.tv/summit1g - CS player http://www.twitch.tv/zp_tv - Tribes player http://www.twitch.tv/stermytv - Arena FPS player (multiple games) http://www.twitch.tv/kudochop - Class based team FPS player (multiple games) http://www.twitch.tv/pyyyour - TF2 player http://www.twitch.tv/carnagejohnson - Quake/TF2 player http://www.twitch.tv/coolmatt69 - Class based team FPS player (multiple games) http://www.twitch.tv/talespinlol - Class based team FPS player (multiple games) http://www.twitch.tv/flame - TF2 player http://www.twitch.tv/dahang - Quake player http://www.twitch.tv/ohcrocsle - Day of Defeat player http://www.twitch.tv/lolenigma - TF2 player http://www.twitch.tv/b4nny - TF2 player http://www.twitch.tv/clockwork - TF2 player http://www.twitch.tv/2gd - Quake player http://www.twitch.tv/fazz http://www.twitch.tv/juv3niletv - CoD player http://www.twitch.tv/a_seagull - TF2 player http://www.twitch.tv/outc1der - Battlefield / Dirty Bomb player http://www.twitch.tv/milleniumtv2 - ? I think there is a key distinction between what is "good, stimulating, interesting and exciting", but not fun. There is a magic that has been missing from SC2 for quite some time. I am not trying to hate on SC2, but I think the magic we are seeing in Overwatch is something that SC2 has always been missing. I won't be surprised if Overwatch becomes a major esport. Multiple sources tell us that Blizzard is finally gearing up for a massive esports push, the game is legitimately fun and I think Blizzard is poised to release a game that manages to compete with both FPS and MOBA. Not to mention a huge crowd that will take an interest and give it a legitimate shot *purely* because it is a Blizzard title.

Lots of stuff you have to memorize, accurate timings you need to refine. Lots of stuff where you make clicks for teh sake of clicking (macro). Then once in a while you might get to actually control your units in an engagement, but the micro interactions - at least prior to LOTV - were generally not good. And then if you make one small mistake, you can easily just lose the game right afterwards. If anything, it's actually point in favor of how awesome the RTS genre could be in the future as all of the above issues are adressable. But game-designers haven't yet figured it out, and those who try to think that units need to either move in slow-motion or that controlling more than 10 units at the same time is bad.

Sc2 for me is WILDLY fun for me and it has always been. Specially playing with friends while tryharding to carry their asses. I only stopped playing the game because of hand injury and after surgery I am coming back to it now and having the same fun I used to have.

All true, that is why I found more fun RTS to play ![]() As for Overwatch, the game looks as fun as older FPS I used to play when I was younger (quake, quake 2, TF1) so I am looking forward to playing it.

The majority of people who play RTS games online play in groups and fall off when that stops being fun. The competitive 1v1 player base is always longer lived, but people like playing with friends. Its why focused 1v1 RTS games are always a tough sell to the mass market.

F2P games are another problem though. Prior Blizzard games basically were the only one who offered non browser based f2p games. Now they are everywhere. If you had War3 you basically had an endless amount of tiny casual games that were fun to play. And most of those games had mechanics close enough to warcraft 3 itself, so you got back into normal warcraft3 pretty easily. Also http://wcs.battle.net/sc2/en/players/dva is a perv detector. + Show Spoiler + If you see hands on the portrait of her (not the background) you are a perv ![]()

The smartest part about the game is that they are building characters for all play styles. Everything seems to feel wonderfully overpowered and I hope they keep it that way.

That's what I really enjoyed about Smite (and Dota - although I didn't really get into that because learning lots of MOBAs is time consuming), and it's part of the reason HotS didn't stick beyond a decent game to dick around in. It's fun when everything is crazy strong, because crazy strong vs crazy strong makes for some damn interesting fights.

I mean sure, there were different weapon loadouts and more secondary weapons, but nothing as drastic as these different playstyles imo. And don't get me wrong, I looove TF2. I've played a lot over the years (not competitively, but it was one of my favorite FPS games to just pick up and play), and this just feels like a new, great version of that same style of game. I'm not really the type to talk about like game mechanics or "speed of the game" or whatever compared to other competitive FPS games, but as far as the class and playstyle system goes, Overwatch really fits my desire a lot.

It’s a hard thing to do, especially if the community latching onto something believe it to powerful. Of course, Valve just doesn’t discuss balance and that solves the problem. Its also a little easier in FPS games since the matches are so short. But everything being broken all the time is fun. Itsmight not work in a game like HotS, which is designed ease players into a Moba style game. But for Overwatch is seems great.

ATVI will do it for them with the new subsidiary headed up by Mike Sepso and that guy from the NFL Network... i think his name is Bornstein. ATVI won't allow Blizzard to promote and handle any eSports related activities for Overwatch while ATVI's new subsidiary is promoting and creating the CoD eSports scene, it will all be under the ATVI umbrella and its new eSports subsidiary.
