Hey everyone!

I have seen a couple Heroes of the Storm thread pop up on TL, but most are old (and never gained traction) or are discussing very specific things. I thought it would be useful to make a general discussion thread for each patch, shamelessly stole from NeoIllusions and the LoL subforum.

So this would be the place to discuss almost anything Heroes of the Storm. Please of course keep discussion civil, this is a new game, have fun!

Zagara Patch - Live on June 25th, 2014.

+ Show Spoiler [Patch Notes (VERY VERY LONG] +

Experience and Snowballing

Experience earned by killing Minions in-lane has been increased by 20%.
Bonus trickle experience granted to a team that is behind by 3 or more levels during a game has been removed.
Early implementation for the “Underdog Bonus” has been added.
A team that is behind in levels – the “underdog” – now earns bonus XP whenever an enemy hero is killed, while a team that is ahead in levels receives reduced XP for killing enemy heroes.
The amount of bonus takedown XP granted to the underdog team, as well as reduced takedown XP for the team that’s ahead, scale significantly up based on the level difference between teams.
The Underdog Bonus starts at a 1 level difference, and caps off at a 4 level gap.
The Underdog Bonus continues until team levels become even.
Head here to check out additional details on the Underdog Bonus, as well as reasoning behind why we’re trying out this new system.

New Hero

Zagara has been added to Heroes of the Storm and is now available for play!

Abilities:
Baneling Barrage (Q)
Launch a stream of Banelings that explode on contact with enemies.
Hunter Killer (W)
Unleash a Hunter Killer Hydralisk to attack and chase an enemy.
Infested Drop (E)
Bombard an area with a Zerg Drop Pod that spawns Roachlings.
Trait
Creep Tumor (D)
Spawn a Creep Tumor, which generates Creep and allows Zagara and her minions to move faster.
Heroic Abilities
Nydus Network (R1)
Zagara can place Nydus Worms and use them to quickly traverse the Battleground.
Devouring Maw (R2)
Summon a giant Maw to engulf enemies in an area, disabling and damaging them.

USER INTERFACE
Character Portrait

A Zagara portrait has been added to Character Portrait Select.
Score Screen

Right clicking a player’s Hero image on the end-of-game Score Screen displays options for communicating with, or reporting that player.
Teammates will display the following options: Whisper, Invite to Party, Add Friend, Block Communication, and Report Player.
Enemies will display: Block Communication, and Report Player.
In-Game UI

General
Many aspects of the in-game UI have received size reductions and layout changes in order to provide more vision of the game world and reduce the possibility of accidental clicks on UI elements.
The in-game Tab Screen has been reworked.
The Tab screen will now remain on screen after pressing the Tab key.
Dismiss the Tab screen by pressing Tab again, or clicking the X in the top right corner.
Clicking the speech bubble next to a player’s name on the Tab screen now blocks communication with them.
A player can be unblocked by clicking the speech bubble again or from the Social tab in the Options menu.
In addition to takedowns, deaths, and Battleground objectives, the Tab Screen now also includes tracking for siege damage, Hero damage, and healing done, as well as team levels, and hero kill totals for each team.
Click the “Show Talents” button at the bottom center of the Tab Screen to view all Talents and Heroic Abilities selected by each player during a match.
Talent Selection
The detailed Talent Select and Quick Select panes have been combined into one compact interface.
The new Talent Select pane includes detailed descriptions for each Talent, and tier selection has been moved from the left to the bottom of the pane.
Talents can still be quickly selected via hotkeys by pressing “Ctrl” and the corresponding number key.
Kill Streaks
A kill streak meter has been added next to the in-game Hero portrait.
Notifications are displayed at the top of the screen when a player achieves kill streaks of 5, 10, 15, and 20.
Players’ nameplates now light up or catch fire to show off when they’ve achieved lengthy kill streaks.
Kill streaks are reset upon death.
Notifications
Notifications that appear at the top of the screen now focus on Hero takedowns.
Top notifications now also indicate team kills, and feature a counter near the top left corner of the screen which displays the time remaining to continue a multi-kill streak.
Towns destroyed and Mercenary Camps captured are no longer announced via top notifications.
Battleground-specific notifications have been moved above the minimap.

What's everyone thoughts on Zagara? Played 11 games with her last night and she seemed really fun. Like a hyper-mobile siege tank that has self-peel, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

She's got a broken ability that doesn't cool down - hopefully people stop using her as broken after today's update

Otherwise - reasonably solid pusher :-)

I have no experience of the game other than from watching a few streams, but from what I have read of the underdog feature it would seem it really discourages competitive play.

I mean it seems to actually punish success (less % exp for each level advantage) and reward failure (more % exp for each level below enemy).

Is the game intended to be even less punishing of mistakes than LoL? Any players that have tried the game, what are your thoughts on it? Since it was my understanding they will be trying to promote the game as e-sports eventually.

Well they haven't settled on a final form of the mechanic as they just totally revamped it two days ago. Seems to be in line with what LoL has been working towards for awhile now. The main difference is they don't mind making the mechanic a well known out in your face one.

I have only played like 25 games with the new system and it felt fine. If you got really ahead you just continued getting really ahead. If it was close but you were a bit behind several kills in a row brought you back in. Since no gold/items there has to be ways to get back in once behind.

I for sure have never seen one person in game complain about it, it seems like something only newer players that don't understand everything yet are super hyped up about. The current system may not be the final or even the right one, but games like LoL have shut down gold and such, this game has bonus exp/reduced exp for kills.

A good team is still going to be able to find exp in many places, kills are far from the only source of it. That same good team while ahead will likely find more sources of exp than the opponents anyways with or without kills. Should be fine for pro play but I could be off base, idk.

I'm starting to make some videos of fun builds for HotS. Put my first one up last night, check it out and let me know what you think. I will post the new ones in this post so I don't spam the thread or anything. Figured it could be fun. I know the production sucks as we don't have the planned overlays done yet, but that's soon. Aside for that what can I add or do to make them better?

Been working on a Tier list the last couple days, any feedback?

Legend

Tier 1: The best of the best in the class. Often does things other champs cannot do (ex: Zeartul burst, Tycus DPS, Malfurion utility, etc) and they do them well. Heroes in this tier will often do things in a way the others cannot and only have small holes to exploit.

Tier 2: Still solid champs, just when compared directly with T1 lack something the others ones have.

Tier 3: Mostly the bottom of the barrel. Most of these champs just lackluster and have signifigant exploitable holes in their kit (ex: Illidan). These picks can still obviously win games, however there is both better choices and choices that will make more sense in a competitive environment.

Tier 4: Reserved for champions that have MAJOR issues with their kit that not only can be exploited, but can put their team behind even when played correctly. Champs in this tier should be rare and likely will be in line for a rework or significant buffs in the future.

The list
Assassin:
T1: Nova, Tycus, Zeartul
T2: Raynor, Valla
T3: Kerrigan, Falstad, Illidan

Warrior:
T1: Stiches, Diablo
T2: Tyreal, Arthas
T3: E.T.C, Sonya
T4: Muradin

Support:
T1: Brightwing, Malfurion
T2: Tassadar, Uther
T3: Tyrande, Lili

Specalist:
T1: Gazlowe
T2: Nazeebo, Sgt Hammer, Zagara
T3: Abathur
T4: Murky

The couple I know will be controversial:
+ Show Spoiler +
Falstad: While he has some of the highest damage in the game and the ability to quickly traverse a map, I have yet to see any Falstad's make significant impact in my games in the most recent patch. He seems to be very dependent on several key talents, and not having a proper mount can really be a hindrance on rotation heavy maps such as Blackheart's Bay. While fly makes his mobility nice, in maps where you move around a lot. His passive is very lackluster in a heavy trading game such as HotS and his shield on E is his only defensive anything. Two key talents (imo) in "Fly Away" and "Gust of Wind" that would improve his mobility are on key talent levels that severely reduce his DPS.

However since the Zagara patch Faltad's have been a really rare sight, so it's possible I just don't see quality Falstad's enough.

Illidan: Some people would tell me he needs to be T4 but I disagree. With the recent attack speed change combined with the small boost to his AD, Illidan seems to be in a better place now. Although he is not close to being T1, I could see him even being as high as T2. However I aired on the side of caution and moved him up to T3 from T4.

I don't totally know what to make of this champ. Illidan's on my team since the Zagara patch are a combined 17-6 (73.91% winrate) while on enemy teams is 8-17 (32.00% winrate). This and Falstad are the only two picks I'm not really sure on.

Brightwing: Honestly on 3 of the 4 maps I consider Brightwing THE support and the only T1. However Malfurion is a much more solid choice on Haunted Mines where Brightwing's mobility is hampered by the small map size. Once a Brightwing has the Regenerative Rains + Blink Heal combo (also ideally Protective Shield) you will be hard pressed to kill any one champ short of a 5 man full burst or CC locking Brightwing.

Brightwing really brings it all to the table. Insane mobility with Phase Shift, incredible healing, very useful CC (poly). great engage with Blink Heal + Polymorph, great disengage with Blink Heal + Pixie Dust, and anything else you could want. What also stands out is this is one of the few supports that can justify skipping the ult upgrade for Storm Shield.

Stiches: You could pretty much gut his kit and leave him with only hook and he would still be playable.

Lili: If Lili didn't sync so well with Tycus she would easily be T4 after the nerfs. However she can be strong when paired with Tycus who is a top pick. This alone makes her relevant enough to keep in T3. Lili's in my game (ie: Allies and Enemy's) have plummeted to a combined 23.80% winrate, where in the Murky patch it was at 53.25% winrate.

Marudin: The amount of times I have accidentally dodged everything a Marudin has is way too damn high. Dwarf Toss can't stun until level 17, thus is just a plain bad spell. There is nothing a Marudin offers that is really desired by me as a teammate.

Kerrigan: She got WRECKED by the shield change. Basically only useful these days I think for an engage tool, which is not really what you are looking for generally in an Assassin. Every time I see a Kerrigan she just initiates, then immediately dies. If Blizzard decided to re-spec her to be a Warrior (stats wise) she could easily become a T1 pick in that class.

Given how tower ammo works, Zagara is a bit overpowered as a pusher. Like a lot of heroes, she can spam her abilities to hit towers for damage, but her minions also take up to 2 shots per minion (and one move spawns 3) off the towers, making pushing ridiculously easy. Her movement on creep gives great map vision and makes her able to walk away from pretty much every gank ever, making her very safe.

Honestly, they just need a flat decrease to health of all summoned creatures or some way for towers to kill them without expending ammo, it makes pushing just too easy.

I think the thing people need to learn with Zagara is how to clear creep, and remembering to do so. I played about 30 games with her on release and learned pretty well where a creep tumor will be. When I play in lane vs a Zagra now she often will never get past one tumor at a time, as most skills that clear have a smaller cooldown.

If you can limit her creep, her power seems to fall off. However maybe Zagara's will start taking up layering tumors so it's harder to guess where they are.

Tassadar's Orcale also screws Zagara so hard.

She also has some pretty lackluster teamfighting unless you have perfect positioning and time to set up creep in advance.

Since it was my understanding they will be trying to promote the game as e-sports eventually.

dota has similar balance mechanics. you get more xp for killing higher lv heroes. and more gold for killing heroes that have killstreaks. you can kill a 10-0 guy and get like 1,000 gold for it

Is this 3v3 or 5v5 again? If it's the latter, I can't be bothered to play it. It's difficult enough to find even two players...

5v5. There is a looking for group option built into the game that I have had great success with.
