Launches are always bad simply because Blizzard doesn't have a good way to scale infrastructure for unusually large spikes in activity. There's no cheap, simple way to do it either. It's not just adding hardware, but adding the linkage and debugging any issues that arises with that hardware, as well as testing it full capacity for the first time. You have to invest in temporary hardware and temporary, skilled personnel. In other news, position 2704 in queue after 30 minutes. Probably won't be able to play for another 2 hours. :/

Currently it seems like servers are so fucked up that he isn't spawning so you can't target him, because there's thousands of people in the same garrison.

There's likely a number of things that could be doing it. It's likely code that hasn't been optimized to the full extent. Looking at what has been changed and added in WoD, I wouldn't be surprised if it is garrison related (there is a lot of content in there), but it could be other things as well, including good ol' lag problems from simply too many people in proximity to one another when it comes to garrisons. Updated queue position: 2235.

Now it of course has the tiiiny issue that if you haven't established your garrison, you cannot advance in the story because of Garrisons not working. This is for EU, I imagine NA is a lot more smooth as always as they seem to just use EU to betatest.

It might be helpful if there were some specific information of just what kind of cost and manpower blizzard would need to commit to if they were to manage, say 7 million+ concurrent smoothly. Usually it's just a lot of condescending sneering aimed at people with less technical expertise, which just inflames the situation further.

I have 4-5wow accounts and I can't remember what characters I have on each one, would really like to know before I add WOD to one of them. I was able to see most or all of that by going to account management and clicking on a service like faction transfer, while my sub was down

Also I would recommend this interesting article on single shards http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/4175/infinite_space_an_argument_for_.php?print=1 Of course they are fundamentally different games but it seems there are other possibilities beyond a straightforward and expensive approach of buying more hardware. It is more to do with the style of the game, beyond expansion launches, Wow does not need to regularly cope with thousands of players in a single battle and so there is little incentive to develop the means to cope.
