Are there any build-order/strategy guides for the Orc race that you guys can show me? Thanks in advance Hello RysaSt0rm, and welcome to the thread. It's great to know some people are still discovering the amazing game that is WC3. First off, if you are really completely new, I recommend you play on BNet rather than w3arena. The player base of w3arena is small, and the level of play is also higher. You are more than likely to meet players who belong in the top rankings, and the small community basically makes the ladder meaningless as you can literally meet anybody. You will have a slight delay in BNet, but your games will probably be more productive and less one-sided. Now, regarding strategy. I suggest you check out Replays.net and download any Orc replay you can find. This will help you grasp the basics regarding build order etc. Out of all four races, Orc probably has it easiest when it comes to "cookie cutter" builds. Basically, people tend to say Orcs can win any match-up with BM/SH (Blademaster and Shadow Hunter) or BM/TC (Blademaster and Tauren Chieftain) and Grunts/Raiders/Spirit Walkers. It is sort of true. That particular combo of units is very strong and can pretty much do very well against most strategies. The FS (Far Seer) is also very viable, though not as popular because of the BM's tendency to turn into a serious killing machine when played right. Orc is generally the aggressor in a game, as they have powerful harassing options with both of their best starting heroes: BM and FS. The BM is particularly efficient at creep jacking and stealing creeps and/or items. He's also good at scouting the map once he has Boots, and he's generally a very powerful (if not the most powerful) hero. He's quite frankly very unbalanced, but that's another topic. The FS on the other hand is ranged, making it possible to kite, and also has very good skills. His wolves allow you to creep while taking little to no damage on your units, and they're also great for scouting, fighting and harassing workers. He also has excellent fight presence thanks to Chain Lightning. Chain Lightning + Shockwave is deadly in big fights. You should also read the breakdown of the Orc race I wrote in the OP. It includes a short description of the core concepts of the race, and lets you know about their basic strengths and weaknesses. You should also read the tips section, it will help. I say watch a couple of replays to get the basic build orders down (they really aren't very complicated, just watch the buildings the player builds and the order in which they build them, and keep an eye on the worker production to try to identify the right timing for the buildings) and go play some games on BNet to practice them. You can begin working on the rest after that. And never forget: long live WC3! Thanks for your suggestions, However I do not think I have access to the BNet servers because I am using the WC3 Client from iCCup. Are there any other servers that I should check out for my skill level? Hey RysaSt0rm, I see. Well, worst comes to worst, you can always buy the game. It's like $15 or so for both WC3:RoC and WC3:TFT, and it's definitely worth it. You might get to enjoy some custom games on BNet too! Long live WC3!
Thanks for the suggestion once again! I will be checking around Amazon/E-Bay soon for some copies

War3tv admin Aaron has recently done an interview with the three head admins from W3Arena, a private server which is an alternative to Battle.net. In my opinion W3A is the future for the active wc3-scene. If you guys are interested in facts and history behind it you can read the (very long) interview here: http://war3tv.com/2014/02/27/behind-the-scenes-of-w3arena/

Cause the game mechanics are so fucking cool, if nothing new comes, Im always gonna play Wc3 Without searching too much I can only name Dawn of War series. It includes: Dawn of War and its expansions Winter Assault, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm. Dawn of War II and its expansions Chaos Rising and Retribution. I'll describe some features of the gameplay (this is a very general overview, tell me if you want to know more details): First DoW has macro part similar to WC3, with tech tree and division by tiers. You start at T1 and after you meet some requirements you can upgrade to T2, and after than to T3. You don't need to make many production buildings, supply caps are relatively low, resource income is limited, and it's more important to micro you troops than to spam new units constantly like in SC2. Main resource "requisition" is gathered by capturing and holding strategic points on the map, this creates a constant need for the map control. In WC3 map control would grant you experience and items, here it grants you better resource income. Secondary resource is gathered by building generators, guess you could compare it to wood in WarCraft. Micro is really important and fights are very dynamic, in this sense game is also similar to WC3. All troops are generally divided into infantry and vehicles, most infantry is produced and controlled as squads. Squads can be reinforces at any point if you have enough resources, this increases their survivability and makes fights more back and forth. The game places less emphasis on heroes than WC3 but they are still very significant. There are no experience and items, but heroes can be made stronger by making upgrades. It's important to preserve your troops just like in WC3, albeit for a different reason. Here your income is very limited and part of it has to be used for tech and upgrades, so you can't afford to lose troops carelessly. Dawn of War II is fairly different from DoW 1. Most of the macro was cut from the game and micro was made even more important. The scale of the game is smaller, there are more various abilities and more emphasis on unit preservation. I won't describe differences between base games and their expansions, it would make the post a bit too long. If you are interested, I would suggest you to try the games in order they were released. Except for the Soulstorm, it was made by a different developer than all the other games in the series, and is just an attempt to make money without putting much effort. Soulstorm is the most buggy game in the series and some of the design decision they made are also very questionable. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I like DoW 1 a lot and still play it online occasionally. Better player would still win most of the time, balance issues only become crucial at the significantly high level of play. Also, when you are mentioning balance you should clarify what version of the game you are talking about. Holy shit man ! you seem like a legit DOW player , Please add me to your steam and lets play a few games !!! Retribution or Soulstorm ( and Dark crusade if you want to avoid the ss bugs ) slicks_tchado I don't play Retribution online for a few reasons. Me having an old PC that can't run the game smoothly being the main one.
As for the DoW 1, I didn't buy it from Steam so it is not connected to it. I guess we can agree on some time that would be convenient for both via PM here at teamliquid. I'll send you a message.

Let's say that I'm a bit interested in playing WC3, but I never learnt the basics years ago like most people did. How do I start? Are there build orders?

Hey Cervidaez, and welcome to the thread.
You'll find plenty of general information regarding game play and the game itself in the OP. About build orders, I suggest you go to replays.net (exact URL in the OP) and download any replay you can find for the race(s) you wish to learn. Watch a handful of replays, and try to reproduce the build orders. They're pretty simple, and you will learn a whole lot from those replays anyway.
For now, I think the information I wrote down in the OP (race breakdowns, replays, various tips) should be enough to get you started. If it's not, post again and we'll see.
Go on my child, play and enjoy the amazing game that is WC3!

To Spaylz, well done bro!!!!!

Reminder: Open Cup #2 is taking place today at 15:00 CET (less than 7 hours from now) If you guys want to see some good wc3 action you should definitely check out the streams on twitch:
->Twitch Wc3 streams
An English cast will be provided by Masaa. He has always been there for wc3 and has huge knowledge about the game and it's players.
|
So which server do most people play these days ?
|
While listening to the cast by Masaa I randomly heard him mention something about the former Russian player Deadman being... well, dead. After some googling all I found was this link in German.

Whether this is true or just an elaborate troll, I don't know but... crazy shit, yo.

Just came back to WC3 after a few year hiatus... who are some of the current best orc players to watch?
Thanks in advance!

There is mgbp, a chinese orc player who is not that well-known internationally but he's very good. Then there is Fly100% who will have a small comeback for the IET. Focus is in the army now but there are still lots of replays from him that aren't that old.

Thanks Arnold2508!
Whenever I play WC3 I can't help but think that if it had never been released and JUST came out in 2014, it would be garnishing rave reviews (even if it had been released AFTER SC2)!

Hey uiotui, welcome to the thread!
I completely agree with you, but I'm pretty sure I'm biased.
WC3 pretty much spawned DotA and indirectly all the MOBA games. They're popular, but I seriously think that if you were to reverse the order of SC2 and WC3, with WC3 released in 2010, you'd have a massive hit on your hands (yes, I'm implying WC3 would blow SC2 straight out of the water).
WC3, as great as it was, suffered from a flaw (well, more than one.. but to the point!) that wasn't in its or in Blizzard's control: the timing of technology. WC3 "died" pretty much right before the rise of streaming technologies, which, when coupled with the game itself and the much better map editor, would have been a huge success. I am absolutely positive that WC3 would have been one of the top 3-5 games on Twitch with more viewers than SC2, had it been a recent game.
Back then, WC3 was deemed confusing because of the Heroes. The concept of Heroes was fairly new to the RTS genre, and WC3 was really the first game to push it so far that hero-centered RTS (read MOBAs) became a genre of its own. Today though, with all your DotAs, LoLs, Smites and so on, I'm rather sure people wouldn't be as confused by WC3's mechanics. Granted, as a full-scale RTS, it's more complicated than MOBAs, as you have more units to handle, but still... I love WC3 and I enjoyed my time on the game (and still do when I play), but I can't help but feel like it could have been even greater.
That's why I'm convinced that if some decent developer were to release a new RTS game that would somewhat "combine" the concepts of RTS and MOBAs, they'd make a killing. I'm not talking about another WC3 (though I'd be perfectly happy with a WC3 with reworked graphics and a few balance tweaks), but more about a game that would keep the key components of RTS and focus a little more on Heroes. Perhaps make macro and economy less relevant while not totally useless, and implement mechanics that would force players to fight each other. Sadly, the RTS genre is almost dead, but a man can dream...

I see there are quite a few fellow newbies writing in this thread. If anyone want to play, please send me a message. I play the orc. :O)

Hey Spaylz, I like words as well! We are completely on the same page And I will shamelessly bump this thread until WC4 takes command forevermore!

I'm currently out of the country, but if I have time when I come home we could have some games, I haven't played in a while. Too busy. :-(

I have no problem with the graphics of Wc3, actually I dont like Dota2s or LoLs Anime graphics at all. But something that makes it boring for me sometimes, is to see all the same units and spells again all the time. especially Orcs always play the same style. also the mapdesign is too similar. they should take some risks and bring maps that have new features, like new creeps...
and mostly I hate how Human is played. I love 1base Human
