I hear breaking upkeep is bad. Am I supposed to get like EVERY upgrade before breaking 50 supply or what? At around what time am I supposed to break supply cap? It feels weird not building dudes.

And how in the name of the LORD do you finish humans of as orc? I've had a few games where I felt that I won all game long, and then being unable to break the towers leading to me losing a bunch of units and dying.
Noobie mistake, I'm sure, since I probably shouldn't just bull rush in but I've had troubles killing humans even when using the catapults or whatever they are called.

It really depends on the races. Mostly you don't want to break the upkeep on t1 units and unless you want to all in, you want to get a second base before doing so.

Hey vonKlaust,

I've mentioned this before, but you really shouldn't focus too much on upgrades. Because the population limit is only 100 in WC3, units almost always matter more than upgrades.

The upkeep thresholds are 50, 70 and 80 if I'm not mistaken. Depending on your race, you handle the upkeep differently. For instance, a lot of Undead tend to reach 50 (or at least try to reach the closest population number to that) and then hold back on producing anything until they absolutely have to, or until they are attacking. At that time, most Undead do choose to research some major upgrades before producing. Some NEs and HUs, when expanding, also eco at 50 before producing a big army once they've saved up enough.

As for Orcs, though... Orc is typically an aggressive race who has less units out on the field most of the time. It might be beneficial to economize at 50 for a bit, but I don't know if you should do it for too long. From what I've seen, most Orcs rush T3 now to get the Orb on the BM, and they tend to have very little downtime. They are either creeping, harassing or scouting. I'm no expert Orc player, so you should probably find a few replays and see if eco at 50 is actually a common thing, but I would doubt it.

Bottomline: unless you fast expanded, you shouldn't be spending too much money and time on upgrades. Even then, it is recommended to upgrade when you are holding back on pop so you don't break upkeep. That is what most Undead do, and most HU/NEs who expand. Undead are different and generally don't even need to expand to do that, as their nuking potential is so powerful. UD fast expand isn't unreasonable though. I'm doubtful about keeping eco for Orcs, so I suggest watching replays.

Another good time to upgrade would be if you are playing a strategy that involves a timing attack. Say you are playing Undead, and you wish to do a massive push with T2 Fiends. Upgrading ranged attack is generally a good idea in that scenario, but should be done in such a way that the upgrade is finished right before you reach your opponent's base. Typically, in WC3, one does not upgrade unless they are going for the very late game with an expand, or unless they will make use of that upgrade at a predetermined time that is included in their strategy. Only a few upgrades are key and should be researched every single game: Fiend burrow, Ultravision, Long Rifles, Ensnare, just to name a few. These upgrades aren't attack/defense but bring a lot to the table.

Thanks for the reply Spaylz. What I've been doing is hitting around 48-50 and then just go berzerk on the upgrades. It's been going pretty good, but my opponents haven't been super 1337 if you know what I mean. I certainly need to get to know orc T3. You wrote in your short race introduction thing in the TS that orc T3 is really good, but I don't really know why. Guess the orb thing was a good advice in that regard. I haven't dared to dive into later tech yet. I'm still getting used to T2.

I have pretty much switched from NE to Orc now. I actually have a positive win rate with orc on Bnet ladder, while I was losing alot as NE, and winning is more fun than losing. And BM is a really fun hero.

Orc T3 is good because it grants access to the Lightning Orb, which, when it procs, immobilizes the target and purges all buffs and debuffs. That means, it might remove a Hex off your target, but it'll also remove everything else and they won't be able to move. It can be counter-productive at times, since it counters Hex, but it's an excellent item. Not to mention the fact that it transforms the BM into an air killing machine.

T3 also gives access to the instant Stronghold, an item in the Orc shop. It's expensive, but it allows you to expand in a matter of seconds. T3 also has interesting upgrades, mostly the Liquid Fire for the Bat Riders, which prevents all repairs when they attack a building, and also reduces attack rate of towers I believe.

So Bat Riders could be an answer to human tower spamming? So hard to break.

Ah the good old wc3tft times. I was rank20 on the EU ladder back in 2005, managed to beat everyone except for grubby, but atleast i had a 50mins game against him that was close as fuck.

Typically when you're holding at 50 food you wait for several things to happen before breaking into upkeep. First you want to buy healing scrolls and other consumables like invul pots because they are more efficient than a single unit. When you do break you want to save up about 1000 gold first and make a unit from each of your production buildings. For example, right before I push, I'd make a grunt, walker, and another kodo so that my push is much stronger, but I have also minimized my losses from gold upkeep (you'll also note that this is exactly 10 food so that I only have to invest in one more burrow). Healing scrolls are especially potent as orc because of spirit link, but they're important and game winning as any race.

You also need to be reactive to your opponent with upkeep. If your opponent shoots up to 70 or 80 food and you're still banking up on 50 then you're probably going to lose. If your opponent is pushing with 60 food then you can probably turtle out with defenders advantage on 50 food. Making your additional units at the last possible moment is going to get you the biggest advantage.

I'd also say orc tier 3 is highly overrated. Grunt raider walker every matchup easy ^_^

I wouldn't say so, no. By the time you have T3, Liquid Fire and enough Bat Riders to do the work, chances are the Human will have a very potent army and/or a massive amount of towers. Bat Riders are good against Gryphons, but if the Human scouted your tech and if he is smart, he'll go all ground and smash you.

Demolishers are a decent answer to towers (though no more than 3 or so). I believe there is a T2 upgrade that allows them to deal DoT damage around the area they target? I'm not sure if it's T2 or T3, but I would say T2. Another annoying thing to do is to focus the main and bring it down very quickly, but you can only generally do that if you have a lot of Raiders. The main does go down quickly, and it cripples the Human quite heavily. I'd say 6-7 Raiders is good enough to do this, possibly even less. If the Human repairs, you can simply Ensnare the Peasants, and keep focusing the main.

Of course, it all depends on the amount of towers and on how the game goes. If you can catch the Human's army unawares, kill his Hero or a lot of his units before trying to break the base, you'll already have a big chance of succeeding. Truth be told, I'd say that if the Human really has too many towers, it's probably better to creep a lot and keep excellent map control so you can catch him. If your Heroes outlevel his, and if he can't really go outside due to you coming down on him too hard, his towers won't matter in the long run, as you'll have map control and more XP. Kind of a scorched earth tactic: kill every creep on the map and take all the gold/XP, that way he'll have an army but his Heroes will be low level.

I wouldn't say that Orc T3 is overrated. It's definitely good, but it simply depends on your play style. The good old Grunts/Raiders/SW does work wonders, and it's effective in most match-ups. Some high level players simply go T3 often, but that's a matter of preference, as it relies on the Orb and on the BM becoming a walking slaughterhouse.

Humans massing towers in and of itself is really easy to counter; just take the rest of the map (meaning, 2-3 expos, vision/scouting at all mines) and add in T3. Orc T3 isn't really great compared to the other races since tauren are really easily countered and berzerkers aren't very strong once there's a lot of AOE spells on the field, but it has some nice things that are worth getting (lightning orb, fortified burrows, bloodlust, heal wards, tiny great hall, added third hero which is very good on Orc since they'll have access to clarities for a good amount of mana). Orc doesn't have solid strats built around a T3 rush though like UD (destros) or NE (bears).

The problem with Humans massing towers is you never know what they might have behind it. They might have mass gryphs, mass gyros, mass tanks, invisimortars with AM/BM pounding your gold peons, mass hawks, or hell they might just go mass knights/sorcs and overwhelm you before you get a counter out. Scout Scout Scout, spend some money on reveals from the goblin workshop if you need to.

Mass tanks was really successfull when i played this game and there is no way you defend your expansions (especially as undead) against them.

There are ways to counter mass Tanks.

For one, it's a slow unit. Undead have the possibility to slow it even more with their towers. You can also arrange your base in such a way that makes it difficult to send Tanks directly against your main and such.

As Night Elf, uprooting counters Tanks, as it changes the armor of Ancients to Heavy from Building. They are hard to deal with though, but Panda is good.
As Human, it's possible to build walls of Farms to delay the Tanks, though mass Tanks isn't common in that match-up.
As Undead, I'd recommend putting up two Frost Towers (or whatever they're called) and putting a few Ziggurats in front of your main. Ghouls also do wonders against Tanks, as you can circle them and kill them.
As Orc, Ensnare counters Tanks pretty damn hard. Raiders also have Siege attack, which helps dispose of Tanks even faster.

Overall, Tanks can be pretty tough to deal with depending on the map, but it's certainly not impossible. Good map awareness is key, as good Human players will generally send small groups of Tanks to hit you in several locations.
