Based on the description of the technology developed for the patent it seems likely Microsoft will use the Kinect sensor, which is mandatory with Xbox One, to monitor the number of people present while watching a TV show, movie or music on the device. I think this is utterly undesirable!

Two examples given include doling out achievements for watching a single event like the Super Bowl, or for watching an entire series of a single show.
"Additionally, by tying the awards and achievements to particular items of video or advertising content, viewers may be encouraged to increase their viewership of the content, thus increasing advertising opportunities,"
Microsoft also envisioned using the Kinect motion-sensing camera in tandem with this system. For example, achievements may be tied to viewers performing specific actions while they watch a show. The system can make sure the user is simply in the room while it plays, or it can tell the user to hold up a specific product. The camera would then scan the item held up and reward the user with an achievement.
it wont stop happening

The good news keeps rolling in: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124323-Update-Xbox-One-To-Take-Cut-With-Every-Pre-Owned-Sale
Hopefully the retailers grow a spine and boycott this shit. Probably not since they'll likely still take their $15 cut on new game sales and settle for 10% of what they normally make off of used games.
Throughout all of this, MS still hasn't addressed rentals in particular. Used games has been a firestorm with a long time and publishers have come up with increasingly anti-consumer methods of circumventing used game sales, but what about rentals?

im so happy that I decided to invest in a strong desktop a few years ago. with steam I really feel like I have no need for a console.

I can imagine it
"Hey guys, lets take the WORST thing about video games and then shoehorn them into television! That'll convince the general public video games are a legitimate hobby and should be taken seriously!"

If even half of the shitstorm is accurate, pretty much all Sony has to do to get a repeat of the PS2's dominant era is to simply not fuck up the PS4 too badly.
|
|
The more I learn about Xbox One the more disgusted I am by it.
This whole kinect acting like a surveillance camera is beyond fucked up. If that happens people need to boycott this fucking thing.
|
Actually, the only way i can explain that whole kinect thing is through some kind of weird bet. Something along the lines of someone high up at MS going "Hey, i bet i can not only make people accept the surveillance system from 1984 in their homes, they will actually pay for it, and rush to the stores to get it on day 1! And i can do all of that in less then 5 years." to someone else, and then they bet a few million dollar on that.

GTFO of my living room Microsoft.... Actually, nevermind, was never going to buy this POS after that reveal and their past systems.

LOL
The most outrageous form of privacy invasion and Gaming/TV DRM I've ever seen.

A lot of people would obviously just cover the kinect camera, but it seems like the MS thing to do to make it so the system won't start or work if the camera isn't picking anything up (like at least a single person).
And who would actually be happy with these TV achievements? I don't want some fucking camera watching me while I watch TV. Somebody is going to hack that shit.
|
Just don't buy it and you are fine. As no one is forced to use it I don't see a problem.
My theory about this wired kinect always only shit is: Some intelligent people at the CIA found out that most terrorists playing Xbox. So they forced MS to help them building up a better Spy network with this thing. Because it sucks to get the latest information of CNN right?
But there is a good thing, if you now pay to have sex and the police gets in you don't need a videocamera to say "Hey its a porn movie! Its legal get the fuck out". Now you can just point at the Xbox or even get a sticker on your House door "XboX one installed" and you will never ever have trouble.

I imagine stuff like screaming company slogans while the commercials for them run and stuff like that.

Okay this shit is legitimately depressing...what the hell?
It's just comical. I do understand the idea of pursing a general media platform because so many people were using it for shows and what have you, but then doing this kind of stuff is ludicrous.

My guess is they didn't like that the wii sold more than them especially to families and people who don't identify themselves as gamers, and microsoft response has been to try move into that space. The notion of the one selling a billion units reflects how focused they are on capturing new people rather than providing an improved gaming experience or holding on to the customers they already have.
Microsoft don't care about gamers because as long as they have call of duty and sports games people will continue to pay for xbox live and there are plenty of people brand loyal enough to move over. Still it's nice not wanting to buy an xbox, i will be able to get so many more games.
