Is this game far from the total war series ? Just wondering cause i'm thinking buying it.

It's a totally different genre. If I had to describe it in comparison with TW, you don't control the battles, so it is like a TW strategic map, but with provinces in the style of Shogun TW or Medieval TW. The time taken to travel across the provinces varies according to distance. It is turn based, with each day a turn, but the turns are passed automatically over time. There is a lot more focus on diplomacy mechanics, and a lot more historically accurate factions too. It's also a lot more difficult to simply sweep all before you due to the overextention mechanics where you can only take over a few provinces. Also the AI is less shitty than TW in every aspect, though that's not hard.

It also completly different game than CIV. Technological progress is much slower. It takes into account only small part of history (compared to civ). You manage countries, and provinces not cities. A LOT more diplomacy and economy. Also fighting is much more strategical than tactical (like in civ). You have a lot more control and more decision to take than in civ.

Yeah, as a general idea, i would say EU is kind of like the TW map mode without the battles, but good (I am not saying that TW is a bad game, but TW without the battles would be a bad game. The map mode in TW is only there to give circumstance to the battles. In EU it is the main attaction, and thus a lot more developed). So if you want something that is like a much deeper TW map mode, you will probably like this.

Compared to Civ, this game is a lot more focussed on politics, and there is a lot less tedious micromanagement of 100 different units all the time. However, you usually don't have the early civ part of exploring and grabbing all the shiny stuff. A common decision in EU would be something like "Hm, i want that province from Genoa. But they are allied with France, and i can't fight France because they are fucking France and i am a small Italian republic. Can i get someone involved that can take on France? Do i just wait and hope France gets really busy doing something else or unallies Genoa for some reason? What can i do in the meantime?"

While in Civ it's usually "Hm i want ghandis shit, send in the bombers! Where do i send this guy, where do i send that guy? Oh also after i am done with Ghandi absolutely everyone will hate me so i should probably build more bombers."

Compared with Civ, there are more differences than similarities. The gameplay is closer to TW series minus the battles. Civ feels like a turn based board game, and plays like one, whilst EU4 feels more like a real time, empire building, role playing game. The only thing you can say that are similar is that they have a diplomatic system.

Hm.
So I played a game as the Blackfoot, dominated North America, blocked off the colonizers and westernized in the mid 1500s.
Now I'm full catholic, caught up on tech and raking in the money, but I can't build any buildings. Any Ideas why that is?

The Blackfoot (feet?) are a native council government type and there's no option to change that even with admin tech 12+.
I also don't have the new world expansion. Thanks in advance.

The best comparisons to this game aren't things like Civilization or Total War, it's actually stuff like Football Manager. Also EU3 forever.

Got my ass handed to me after 130 years by the Mamluks (playing as Ottomans). Maybe it was because their military level was 15 and mine was 9. I made some very stupid decisions in allocation of military points. Why use a shit load of military points for naval upgrades when I don't give a shit about my navy?

wow, the tech difference should be the other way around^^ allthough how do you use military points for naval upgrades, they're upgraded with diplomatic points.
Somewhat related i have a rather difficult game on my hands, burgundy has killed france and inherited castile... they're like triple the size of my army/manpower/economy and I'm the third biggest after the ottoman empire playing as scandinavia with the swedish ideas. it's not even 1600 yet, burgundy keeps blobbing and austria can't stand up to them cause they're weak as shit currently getting pummeled by low-tech poland/lithuania union. The only empire even close to burgundy is the ottoman empire but they rivaled me so no chance of an alliance there.... My economy is strong and my army quality high, but i feel the burgundians would still utterly crush me with sheer numbers. They have the lucky super leaders and good tech so my troops wouldn't be significantly superior.

I have lost against french blobs way smaller than this, i just don't have a solution

Why would you take naval ideas if you don't give a shit about your navy? O_o

In General Military-Tech is very important, especially early on. If you don't have some special plan/timing in mind its probably better to not take a military idea first or just take 1-2 bonusses from it and then leave it until later.

Quality boosts ships as well :D With military points.

The only "solution" i might offer is the stupid ai. If you control scandinavia, you might be able to use denmark with great success against them. Allie GB for their fleet and make sure you don't lose the water, then let them come to you with the strait-crossing penalty. Depending on the actual numbers, you might stand a chance. alternatively, scorch earth on your denmarkian provinces, let them go there, then blockade the straitswith your ships and watch them starve their giant stacks to death. All fairly theoretical though, no idea whether this would actually work.

Because I didn't realize how much it would fuck me over later in the game. It was also my first game playing so I wasn't aware of many nuances.

It's probably the best plan, but burgundys super economy and stable homelands combined with me having too many provinces in the hannoverian culture area means it would still be incredibly hard, their fleet pretty much matches great britains but i assume britain would still win thanks to admirals. At least i already allied them. I just researched enough admin to get a new idea, i already have offensive, diplomacy and religious ideas. Does anyone know if the espionage ideas are effective? never considered them before but if i could destabilize burgundy somehow some war exhaustion might actually break it up.

It shouldn't be too horrible. Naval is actually pretty important to the Ottomans, because if you don't have Naval superiority your land is split in half, which is REALLY annoying in a war.

I probably wouldn't take naval idea most of the time, but it shouldn't be too horrible to take them, especially if you fight other strong mediterranean naval powers a lot. Taking them should not overly destroy your empire in any situation though. Worst case you are missing a few military ideas, and a few diplo points that you can't spend on too much cool stuff anyways. With the ottoman tech you will spend most of your mil points keeping up in tech anyways.

Generally speaking, the only points that you should really care about wasting are military ones. For those, I'd pretty much always go with having your tech up to date, but not taking ahead of time mali, and investing the surplus into ideas/buildings. Especially early on manpower buildings can be pretty handy.

What did you do with all your military points to be that far behind the mamluks? I would guess that you built buildings whenever it was possible? (Don't do that). With buildings costing a lot of ruler points, you really need to think about whether you want them or not, even if you have the money to buy them.

Military tech is important. Really important. You get slaughtered by people who are ahead of you in Mil Tech. Also generals. Beginners always ignore generals. Early on, you only care about their shock stat, but that one is INCREDIBLY important. If you fight a 6 shock general with a 1 shock one, you get destroyed. No exceptions. Even if you fight defensively in mountains (-2) behind a river (-1), the enemy still has an advantage with that badass general.
