Ottomans are pretty much France in a different color. You have to hit them as early and as hard as possible. Once France gets Elan + Defensive Ideas 2 you're in trouble, for Ottomans it's once they get their cores back, a mil tech lead (5/5/6 king), their superior early game units and the Janissaries event. The early mil techs often include the oh so important tactics upgrade so a mil tech 5-6 Ottoman army will just shredder an equal size Polish/Lithuanian (who are eastern tech and start with a 4-4-1 king) army with mil tech 4-5. When playing in Europe the best way to crush the Ottomans I have found is to take Byzantium before them. The area is so rich and the bonus the Ottomans get from taking it is so big that it's even worth a noCb war. For the first years everyone is on mil tech 3 so they have no advantage there. Get a big ally (Austria and Poland are best, a combination of Aragon/Castille/France/Venice is fine too), vassalize Byzantium and either get dragged into a defensive war with Otto or just declare for Byzantine cores. Anatolia is very rich itself and if you leave them alone they can still blob, but at least they're manageable and might even crumble to Mamluks/Qara. edit: blocking the Bosporus does not work since 1.14 "It is no longer possible to block a strait for an army whose war allies control both sides of that strait."

...that when you're at -3 stability and get the comet event, you are now drained of 100 ADM. Because apparently your bureaucracy suffers when comets. Screw you Paradox. ![]() forum.paradoxplaza.com Comet event best event!

At this point I'm unsure of the best way to proceed. I've tried conquering India, but there are so many forts and it takes so long to even get a couple provinces, all of them have high development though, and the trade nodes are valuable. I haven't tried expanding to Italy, which seems like a better choice. Peru/Columbia have some gold mines, but the trade nodes aren't worth much. China is too powerful and too far. England is doable, but takes time. I don't wanna eat Aragon since then I'd get border tension with France. Any suggestions?

I usually declare on Castille asap with either Aragon or both France and Aragon as allies. I take Sevilla for trading power, La Mancha for the gold mine, the Canaries to block colonization, and make Leon a subject and feed it provinces for diplo-annex. I also sell Ceuta and ignore Africa. I then expand to the Caribbeans asap, then Mexico for the gold mines, then Gold Coast/Benin, down to Cape. Start another war with Castille and take more provinces. Then expand to Zanzibar/Mozambique, to Goa, to Asia, spice islands, etc. At this point I'm unsure of the best way to proceed. Also, I've only played two games so far, both on ironman mode. First was as England and I made it to the 18th century with huge colonies but they all rebelled and I fractured to pieces and quit in frustration. Second was as Ottomans and I completed the game stretching from Vienna to India. So my question is: is France fun to play or is it too similar to Ottomans?
