does 50% cav ratio mean 50% of the whole army or 50% of my infantry

for example 6 inf 6 cav or 6 inf 3 cav?

Starting a mp game next sunday through some other forums and a guy made a map of all the current player nations, we are at 17 right now and hope to get 1-2 more. I'm playing Savoy.

http://i.imgur.com/e64o0US.png

Currently have deals in place with France (I get to take Provence in exchange for not joining the initial gangbang against him by england + castille + maybe burgundy, + NAP for 1st session) and Venice (he gets Ferrara, I get rest of Italy, I stay out of Venice trade node). Plan is to immediately vassalize Milan and/or Switzerland while taking Provence and Liguria to dominate Genoa node, then eventually form Italy so I'm not stuck with the garbage Savoy ideas. Also trying to work out something with Austria in case Venice betrays me and goes for Italy but haven't been able to get in touch with him yet.

like 95% sure its cav:infantry not cav:army

Uh, what, stop overcomplicating things by getting stuck up on the 'ratio' word. You can have 50/50 inf/cav, don't overthink it! If you doubt this, go test it. The only issue is that you'll have more inf losses during combat, making you drop below 50% inf. Myself i run 2-4 cavs per army until artillery tech, after which i never make cav again. They're hideously expensive and barely more powerful than infantry. Imo the only reason to have them is the combination high economy and low supply limit.

Oops realized I misstated, I meant its cav:infantry in an army, as in arty doesnt matter. So you can have 6 inf 6 cav and have 50% ratio but if you have something like 6 cav 6 arty 2 infantry even though its 6 cav out of 14 units its still only 6:2 cav to infantry.

100% cav is incredibly powerful as horde fwiw, especially since they get 2+ shock cav and can run 100% cav. But yeah as western tech not so much, but you should still have a few cav in armies even once they fall off for flanking purposes.

ok one more, thing, dfoes it make sense to collect taxes in a colony hub?

I know collecting outside of capital recieves negative trade power, but since i am the only guy with trade power there, i might as well collect?

Collect if there if it's worth it, eventually others will start forwarding, and it won't be. If you chain it to your home node, it'll increase your trade power there. Just try different scenarios, but you'll never go wrong with forwarding everything to your main

Yeah I guess you're right, I never play anything far away from the HRE hub anymore.

doesnt trade power go upstream?
And forwarding it will direct trade value.

But other nations allready ddirect to my main tradespot where i have 50% tradepower, so by halving my tradepower by collecting, i lose no gold.
If i directly collect trade, i get 100% of the gold i have influence over, if i direct to sevilla, its a bit over 50%.

flank range is two, so ideal early game 'full flank' means you have equal infantry relative to their entire frontline + 4 cavalry

been messing around with a silly Ironman Zaporozhie game. Crimea and Nogai are vassals:

humanist+defensive / quality+exploration / quantity 7 / defensive 7 / zaporozhian ideas 3 = 100% attrition reduction (any horde / kongo / some other random nations with at least -15% attrition reduction can pull this off). The question was whether attrition reduction is capped (its apparently not)

aim is to destroy France + the luckies by 10:1'ing their stacks repeatedly, and mass assaulting forts.

ZAP ideas are near perfect for this, with +1 maneuver (for hostile reinforce speed), massive manpower recovery, and unit cost reductions.

also, using certain exploits you can day 1 start off with a nice "trust fund," it even works in ironman:

incidentally since The Three Mountains does not have a "did not switch country" condition, there are some interesting strategies being developed to do the achievement using this money exploit...

i cant find any information on this:

Is there anything negative about taking certain decisions that seem to be just üpositive?
For example the catholic decision where i burn poor people for reading the bible, that seems to only give positive modifiers ingame.

Anything negative about these decisions later?

About the decision to form the Netherlands as Burgundy, do you still give all your land away if France doesn't actually exist anymore? Also, if I vassalize France, and do the decision as soon as integration hits 100%, will the integration finish that month?

You can find out information about decisions here

And one thing i do not know for sure is if any of these lingering modifiers enable additional events. There were some in EU3, but i don't know if they changed that in EU4.

Usually it does not make sense to collect at such a node, unless it is so disconnected from your collection node that you probably wouldn't colonize it.

Yes there is a small upstream transfer of trade power, unhelpfully labeled in the upstream node as "transfers from downstream."

They made this weird change to trade where if none of your merchants are assigned to Collect Trade, you get a bonus to trade efficiency/income. Always check manually if you ever try to Collect. I usually find that placing a merchant downstream of my capital, it is more profitable for him to transfer trade power (to nowhere useful) for the tiny upstream transfer of trade power (back to my capital) and less profitable for him to actually collect. (Incidentally, this is also why it is never worth it to Collect in your capital anymore, in spite of the bonus trade income it gives you there.)

Your colonial hub should almost certainly transfer to Sevilla. The obscure mechanic in the preceding paragraph is the most important reason, I think. But there are also nations whose home node is the Caribbean, and by halving your trade power there you let them pull a lot of trade value out of the trade network and into their pockets. Check the "retained trade value" pie chart in the Caribbean node.

Assigning a merchant to steer also multiplies the trade value steered (details escape me). Skipping one on your last stop before collection feels wrong, but you obviously know that already or you wouldn't have asked why.

If my answers are vague, it's because my understanding of the trade system is too. Corrections and clarifications are welcome. The control you actually wield over trade is quite limited, so I've never dug too deeply into its formulas and usually just experiment lazily.

It doesn't really have that much to do with Total War imo. A lot of Total War is about combat, this game is almost exclusivelly about country management/diplomacy.

So maybe, but impossible to say just from that. Depends on what you like in grand strategy games.

Depends, I liked the total war series as well. If you like the combat the most EU4 is probably not a game for you, if you liked the city management the most it's a perfect fit.

Does anyone know a fun country to play as? Got bored of my Najd game and started a Tunisia one but it's too easy...
