Extended timeline mod is awesome. Highly suggest you check it out if you are interested in playing pre 1444 and post 1821

Seconded. Playing as anything from the Roman Empire to ISIS is amazing, and the post-Napoleonic stuff gets really interesting without that 1821 cap.

Edit: Even during the 1444-1821 period, you still get to colonize all of the wasteland areas. The only downside is no ironman.

Is there any way to get other music into this game? Listening to the same 20 songs for 120 hours tires out a bit, although the music is amazing. At least with SC/SC2 there's breaks between games where you can chill with your headphones off.

If there's a music folder, can I just put some files in there for the game to cycle through?

There are a lot of mods to add music that keeps ironman working. You might check how they work and just do the same. Or turn off volume on in game music and listen to whatever you want in a third program.

But how does that even work? I mean you should take no attrition damage, but it's not like all million muskets can fire at once. So DPS should be even, or worse since you don't have artillery.

If you are more than 10:1 you instantly win fights. At least that is a rule that i remember. There might be some limits with low tech nations or something.

How exactly does the shock and fire phase work? No matter how much I read about it on the wiki I can't seem to understand it.

Combat has shock and fire phases. In the fire phase, unit fire attributes are used (along with dice rolls and other modifiers). Then in the shock phase, the units shock attribute is used instead. Repeat until it's over.

This guide is from a few patches ago but I learned a lot more from it than I did from the wiki. I'm sure it includes errors, but the wiki probably has a couple too.

Combat happens in rounds but the rounds alternate between fire and shock. Units and generals use only their fire stats in the fire phase, similarly shock. Generally speaking, the fire phase favors cannons and late game technology while the shock phase favors cavalry and early game technology. Infantry gradually shift from shock units into fire units as the game progresses from the Hundred Years' War to the Napoleonic era.

This means that at the start of the game, very little happens during the fire phase and therefore your generals' fire score is almost irrelevant. Meanwhile most of the dying is happening in the shock phase, so a 5-6 shock general is devastating. As the game progresses, a general's fire score is about as good as the size of your artillery line (since that tends to grow as you get richer and more advanced).

Each individual combat modifier should be pretty simple when you study it. It's only complex when you try to add them all up at once, in order for the AI to be better at estimating combat odds than the player.

Both are true. On top of that, you only need 2:1 ratio if the enemy cannot retreat.
