So clearly, I'm having a good bit of fun with the beta so far, but even on my absolute monster of a computer, my frame rate dips significantly and frequently. It really is pretty poorly optimized. Definitely still playing this post launch, though.

From previews, I expected to hate it, but it ended up being all right and I've enjoyed the fights for the objectives a lot. "Levolution" doesn't mean much on this map (it doesn't really change the landscape at all beyond adding some dust -- it just changes that one area), and I wish there were more toys to play with, but it's decent for what it is. I probably won't come back to it once the full game is released, though.

I don't know if I blame the map or the community more, but this many rooftops with such easy access to them is not something the game can handle if you want people to actually play the objectives. I would take metro style maps any day over this.

It would be very cool if it was infantry battles with some minor vehicles like jeeps or whatever, but transport helicopters? Pick up the bomb, get in a heli, flare once to be completely immune to everything while you cross the whole fucking map, and parachute onto the point. It wouldn't be quite so bad if 1) recons would PLD, and 2) engineers would RPG... but on the whole, pub players are complete idiots. I've gone entire games where I've done nothing but laser designate every helicopter and vehicle without a single RPG being launched, and I've gone entire games as engineer without anyone having targeted enemy vehicles even once (despite my team having like 10 recons). Still, helis could just flare at a good time and you can't target them again until they're already over the point. It completely takes away the excitement of infantry vs infantry battles on the point, which is about the only part of Obliteration I really like. Maybe some other maps in the future will be well suited to Obliteration, but Siege in Shanghai is so far pretty terrible for it.

Not unless you add elevators to every single building, and also change the way elevators work. The teleporting between chambers method of "elevator" means you can C4 the upper floor and just detonate it the second the teleport happens. C4 recon + ammo box support = your roof forever until the end of time. Even then the elevator entrance is a killing field. Doors open and you're dead in a second. If only one side knows how to down helicopters (hint: it's the overpowered RPG / PLD combo), then that side gets complete map control. If the combat helis don't have to deal with enemy choppers much, they can clear all the roofs in 10 seconds flat. That just means that your team deposits 371 recons on them, though, and then the game is just as boring.

Also, the only mechanic that I can think of is to create an out-of-bounds area for every single rooftop that's not accessible. Otherwise, people will find a way to spawn there and snipe away from afar with little to no chance of being killed from the ground. What do you guys think of the range finder mechanic on scopes? I find it either totally useless, but once the people find out what optimal ranges are best for long-distance sniping, I can see sniping as point and click.

There is some valid use of rooftops though pld+rpg or spotting for example or using rooftops to drop onto backfflags or defending D flag from a armor push. But thats what the helicopters are there for on this map, the only reason why people can camp the roofs so long is becasue the choppers arent doing their job (also we dont yet have all the available tools like mortars and commander). Battlefield is a team game unfortunately that means you will have a hard time finding a decent match when you play pubs without any friends. The only solution is to make friends ingame and work together. If you play inf get some chopper friends who can clear roofs for you while you cap flags or plant the bomb. There is a tool for almost every problem in this game you just have to learn how to use it or find someone who knows. Same thing with the helicopters in obliteration, the MAA is more than strong enough to prevent every attempt to drop a backflag with the bomb. Though i understand the frustration when someone is using the AA that doesnt understant its role at all.

They could also stop the lifts from making a bell/ding sound, thus not alerting campers that they just have to detonate the c4 for free kills. edit - also, make stairs an alternative option to elevators in every building, either externally or internally. Preferably a mix.

I can't take a squad and go clear a rooftop if I want to -- I need a helicopter, and those aren't always available. When those recons also have a support with ammo box and an engineer, their combined PLD / RPG fire and elevator C4 makes it almost impossible to take them down, and they can just take down aircraft 24/7.

Sigh, yeah, it's why I don't play it. It would be very cool if it was infantry battles with some minor vehicles like jeeps or whatever, but transport helicopters? My favorite map in all of BF3 is Epicenter, because of that. That was perfect. Only Infantry except 2 small vehicles. Thats how this mode should be like. When you have like 2 people on skype one just always is in a helicopter and the other one tries to get the bomb.

When those recons also have a support with ammo box and an engineer, their combined PLD / RPG fire and elevator C4 makes it almost impossible to take them down, and they can just take down aircraft 24/7. They arent untouchable. You can 1. countersnipe 2. kill them with a attack heli 3. drop a squad on that roof with a transport heli and wipe them 4. go up by elevator on all roofs that are strategically important 5. ignore them if they are recons 6. even shoot them with a tanks 50cal or the lmg on many positions when the tank is angeled a little. The squad that defends a roof with c4 and pld+rpgs aircraft is also not untouchable for the attack heli. PLD has a range of 300m and stingers have a 350m range, they cause some decent area denial for the helis but can still be taken out outside of lockon range. And afteral that is still a squad (3-5 players) that are working together and using highground to their advantage. The ammount of distraction that tactic causes is well deserved but definitely not overpowered. I see that it creates some problems in public matches where teams are totally uncoordinated and assets arent used to their full potential but im shure that this wont ever be a serious problem in any atleast semi competitive format.
