Try super mario 64. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpk2tdsPh0A Spoilers: + Show Spoiler + He holds a button for 12 hours. Honestly the whole time my mouth was agape and all i could think was "WHY!?!?!" Well for one, it's a TAS lol. So he's not manually holding a button for that long. But yeah, for as much detail as he puts into the video he missed out on including a short, 30-second bit at the beginning about how (I assume) in the TAS community there's an interest in doing goofy things with the game or, in this specific case, what's the fewest times we can press "A" and [get a certain star / beat the game / etc]. I've had a few friends post this wondering wtf it's even about but still be transfixed and curious about the content of the video. I know very little about the SM64 TAS community or community in general but I would guess that the whole "fewest possible button presses" thing is just a fun gimmick to play around with, and that it's possible to minimize them using some really batshit crazy game mechanics. A quick mention of this at the beginning of the video would probably save him a lot of questions and confusion from random people that stumble across it. It has nothing to do with "speed"running in the traditional sense, but TAS'ing and crazy glitches have become a bit synonymous with the greater speedrunning community by now. What I personally enjoyed most about the whole thing was the insight into game design and what the numbers are doing under the hood. People have a tendency to call games like SM64 or OoT "broken" because of all the tricks and craziness that we're so used to with speedrunning nowadays, but there's a big difference between "breaking a game" and "a broken game". Nearly every single one of the insane glitches and stuff in these games are not things that you would accidentally stumble across in a normal naive playthrough.

First memory is from a very old GDQ (I think...) where a runner got a pie thrown into his face (speedrun-style!)! I don't remember why and who it was but it happened! The second was also from an old GDQ (this time quite sure!). It was a very short speedrun, maybe 10min or so. The runner didn't say a word, but had like 10 pages of commentary printed out and another one had to read it during his run. And he did, VERY fast! But still the speedrunner was faster than the commentary. It was soooo impressive! Anyone remembers something like that and maybe even a VOD?

The European Speedrunner Assembly is the second biggest offline speedrun marathon (in term of number of attendants) after the GDQs, taking place in Sweden. It'll be between the 23rd and the 29th and we're expecting over 300 people this year. The charity aspect is there though not nearly as centerpiece as it is for GDQs, we mostly strive to have a good time and show some good speedruns on stream. This year it'll be in favor of the Save the Children charity. Here is the schedule: http://www.esamarathon.com/schedule ESA is a lot less known than the GDQs to the "twitch mainstream" so I hope this post will bring a bit more attention to it from the TL readers. I personally will be running Command and Conquer Generals near the end of the stream.

For instance, have any of you guys know of speed runs for full completion of say Broodwar or WC3 TFT, or even SC2?? All I've seen is single-level speedrunning. Might be the best way to get started for me, while playing the games im most comfortable with..

I think I might look into getting into it, gotta find some good/easy games (as im not a zelda/mario/etc player) but I was curious on how the scene is for Starcraft and Warcraft?? Speedrun.com doesnt seem to have much timings for stuff from those games.. For instance, have any of you guys know of speed runs for full completion of say Broodwar or WC3 TFT, or even SC2?? Raelcun has done full SC2 playthroughs twice during GDQ's (might even be three times?). Don't think I have seen a full BW run before though. AdamAK has done some Dota 2 speed runs (fastest wins against bots or something), but it isn't that great tbh. Which is probably why it hasn't been at a GDQ yet

For now, it only would save around 5 minutes, not a full hour or something that speedrunner were imagine it could.

It doesn't save any time right now because no one knows how to reproduce the glitch. Moreover there's already an early master sword discovered which would allow getting the master sword before tower of the gods. Bascially more research needs to be done before it can be used, and then once it can be confirmed to be reproducible on demand people can develop routes for it. In other news, Skater just got a 17:31 in OoT.

I'm curious as well. Personally I've also lost the AGDQ hype but to be fair I don't think it's their fault. After watching AGDQs and SGDQs for three or four years I've kind of watched every speedrun of games I'm interested in. I'll probably still tune in the awful games block (if there's one). No mario maker is really disappointing though. It seems like the sort of thing every GDQ should have.

Yeah, I've really not cared for the last 4/5 events inc. SGDQ, it does seem as if they've lost a bunch of what made them popular. I'll probably just watch the inevitable SM race and that's about it
