I abandoned my Rome campaign because I got bored. I think I'm sitting at about 110 settlements or so in that one. I am going to finish my Seleucid campaign. I'm at roughly 115 settlements (including allies) and have crushed all the remaining opposition. It'll basically be a mop up job in Spain and Europe until I hit 140. Frankly, I think 140 is a bit much. As for favorite faction, definitely the Seleucids. I'm not sure who I'll play next. Maybe the Averni or some other barbarian faction. The Arverni have fun units. Spam Oathsworn once you can recruit them. Yeah, those fucking Oathsworn. They kill pretty much everything in a straight up fight. In my Seleucid campaign, the Celtic tribes were pretty much murdering my Greek allies until I showed up with a punitive force, which got mauled pretty badly in the opening battles. Fortunately, I didn't see any other masses of Oathsword afterwards.

Pikeman spam with any Hellenic faction has got to be my favorite thing. It's like this giant slow moving lawnmower of death that DOES NOT die. Steady is probably my favorite ability as well, it's kind of ridiculous..
I think my biggest gripe with the game is the lack of interesting things happening once you hit the "I have won" position in the game. I wish a mod could create a more interesting late game scenario. I am very happy with the Radious mod's and the All Factions mod.

Ballistas man, ballistas. 4 ballistas easily reduce an army to half its size before they get to melee range. In offensive town battles your ballistas can easily take the town from afar. In city sieges they can break a hole in the wall for your troops to rush in.

Totally invaluable units. Wall breakers. Fleet sinkers. Elephant rapists. What more can you want? My preferred army composition in my Seleucid campaign was 1 elephant general, 6 SS Pikes, 6 royal peltasts, 4 cataphracts, and 3 ballistas. There really wasn't anything that I couldn't handle with that army.
Anyway, I finally finished my legendary Seleucid campaign. Once the Civil War was over, I blitzed across the map very quickly. Anyone who didn't become my military ally died. Some of the Celtic factions had decent armies with Oathsworn. Most everyone else had shit units. It seems that only the Eastern factions reliably tech up and build good stuff, which is unfortunate. I got my military victory in 110 BC (163 turns).

Did they patch/mod this game enough yet? I haven't played the newest patch yet. Graphics Enhancement Mod is tempting, but I might just hold off until hopefully Darth or one of the bigger teams finish their work.

I can't speak to the mods, but it is fairly well patched at this point. Patch 7 is the next big one, which supposedly is going to make some more major changes and improvements.

Regarding ballistae, and other siege equipment, do they still slow down armies significantly? I forwent that stuff in Rome I and Medieval II because it drained my armies' movement points so much. >_<

At least I haven't noticed any movement penalty for bringing siege equipment.
Speaking movement, it took me until the Seleucid campaign to figure out that the best and most valuable general upgrades lie in the cunning line where you get huge bonuses to movement.

Thought that was Zeal? Cunning helped identify hostile agents and armies, right?

Or is there also a movement bonus in the zeal line?

Actually generals benefit equally in all 3 specs.
I find Zeal to be the most useful since -30% moral to enemy units (and with enough Zeal you gain area war cry... assuming your general can live that long) can be game changing.
Authority gives moral boost: but the way I see it is that an enemy that is already routing is one that does not fight at all.

Best imo is still Cunning, The movement bonus is big considering its almost impossible to lose fights past the early game anyway.

The mobility matters more than anything else, especially when you have to play whack-a-mole.

I think Radious mod is quiet good , since Darth is out forever, hes making hes own strategy game. Also there are mod for making traits and characters more interesting ( but its still not enought , the UI is still terrible) its called TTT - Hellbent's Traits, Talents, and Toadies: A Character Mod Overhaul. Now , having All Radious mods and this one makes playing Rome more enjoyable. But the major problem is still the AI , since most of the fun depend of the AI moves. And as you know AI is terrible to say is softly (less so with mods ) . Other notable mods , must have is GEM for graphical enh. You can check mods for yourself :

Now all this said, when friend of mine asked me for this game, i told him to get a pirate version. As for now, buying "this" for 55+7+7+2 is ...well , foolish.Even if you remove the 2 expansions of greek states and nomadic tribes, is still almost 60 €, and for people that isn't familiar with mods , is pointless.
I hope CA will fix AI themselfes, since for moders is quite hard to do that. Its shitload of work to code all that even in small team. I'm sure major mods with huge overhaul like Total War Realism (that is confirmed) will arrive, but single player with the AI like this wont be enjoyable whatever changes they migh fix / put in. I try so hard to be unbiased towards Rome 2, and tell things as they are, but the truth is there.

I can't believe blood and gore DLC is what CA thinks it should be doing when they COULD be continuing to patch the game up to a reasonable status. >_<

Pretty sure they had it in the pipes for quite some time ^^ My point being it doesn't delay the patching and fixing.

I decided to roll with Carthage for my next campaign. I figured that they'd be more challenging than the Averni or one of the other barbarian tribes because their units generally seem to suck and they have a horrible starting position geographically and diplomatically. I made peace with the Turdetani in Spain and then stood pat while I teched to level 2 barracks. I then built up my army in Lilybaeum and took Syracuse. I then marched on Rome, taking the rest of Magna Graecia and all of Italia except for Ariminium, which is being held by the Etruscans. By that time, the African desert tribes were declaring war on me, so I turned around. Libya abandoned me as a client state, so I conquered them, thereby consolidating Africa. Now I just have to wipe out all of those crappy desert factions. My economy is in shambles (almost no one will trade with me), but I have 2 full stack armies and a 1/2 stack navy. I seem to be in pretty good shape overall.

Game is 25% off on Steam. DLC is not. Blood and Gore DLC is a whopping 3 bucks.
