It appears when you lay siege to a city and the defender attacks. He needs to get to that area to break the siege. It also prevents you from conquering a city with just 1 squad of cavalary running around until the 60 minutes are over. I dont know why it would appear when u dont siege a city, but that usually shouldnt happen.

Random factions would just randomly declare war on you to slow you down, even if they really have nothing to gain from declaring war on you. STW2 had the realm divide mechanic. It's a very boardgamey mechanic that renders diplomacy useless. Some people actually like to do some sort of roleplay while they play the campaign. I do some of it, conquering stuff on my own pace. Ironically, these AI alliances speed up my expansion since they force me to counterattack even during the times I want to turtle up a bit to wait for some new unit I want to use.

Torches as in burn down the gates torches? you can't want those removed surely. or have you never seen the "lucky fire arrow sets your ram alight and forces you to lose the battle" of Rome 1

Even if they are pretty expensive (can't even keep up 2 whole armies of them with all of italia) there is nothing that can match them in melle. Yeah they come way to early... if you tech for it you'll barely use your pre marian reform legions which is a shame since they're awesome in their own right.

I pretty much beeline the tier 3 barracks tech regardless of who I play. It's a little too easy to get, and it provides a huge, huge military advantage. Hell, if you're playing as the Romans or one of the successor states, you are getting units that are almost as good as your tier 4 units.

Why do I need to be able to conquer every province capital without even bringing siege weapons?

I'll do the same thing in my next campaign but I usually don't like to impose limits unto myself to compensate for silly design.
