While I see where you are coming from, there is something I just want to say about mods. They may be fantastic and extensive but they are never as slick as a fully made and supported-by-a-studio game. While EB was a brilliant mod, there were plenty of moments, be it when you hear some budget attempt at authentic unit speech, some poorly written description of the unit or a pacing issue that doesn't happen in the game proper, when the immersion would be broken and the enjoyment diminished. I have actually had this problem with mods personally since they went into fashion.
Whatever your experience was of EB, you can be sure that this will far exceed it on many counts and I would not be surprised if the game generally borrows heavily from EB as well.

Civ has a subpar AI as well. They just give the AI cheats on higher difficulties. Total War doesn't have the same degree of AI cheating but makes it up with annoying mechanics designed to slow down the player. It also breaks diplomacy because the AI factions are too obviously and blatantly ganging up on the player. I think I would rather deal with the cheating.

Same. Does anyone actually try being diplomatic in a TW game beyond trade rights, lol? I've never been pleased with the mechanic; even Shogun II left me disappointed.

try some of the MTW2 mods, they are definitely a lot more polished than the vanilla game itself imo.
also, there are battle and campaign AI mods that make M2TW (at the very least) significantly more of a challenge.

I agree, especially TATW is a lot of fun to play, you can get into the story and all. As for the normal europe times i recommend Stainless Steel.
I was really disappointed with Shogun 2, and to a lesser extent Empire, due to the fact everyone's unit's were basically identical. Not to mention the Rock Paper Scissors style combat was just annoying. It didn't matter how powerful your cavalry were, they'd still get destroyed by peasants with sticks.
Give me an Urban Cohort that can destroy anything that isn't on the same level of awesome.

Yeah, trade rights is the only use I have for diplomacy. And I guess selling military access.

If the AI is better and the system is better, there is every use for it. Knowing who to be friends with and when, and how much they will support you in a conflict is very very handy if you are in trouble...
Shogun 2 is poor example of diplomacy... especially because as soon as you gained any fame/recognition the entire country turns against u... so u knew before hand that u were going to have to kill them all eventually... was no point in making friends who u KNEW would attack you in the future.

I meant in using the more abstruse options of diplomacy, like bartering settlements and requesting military aid. I never trusted those aspects of the mechanic to deliver, lol. Sure hope I'm wrong and it's improved this time around.

That's the problem. It isn't better. And I'm not even talking about realm divide.
For example, the AI bases trading rights on how much you'll benefit. If you secure enough trade goods, you'll have to give it ridiculous sums of money to get trading rights. That resulted in people moving their fleets out of the trade node, ask the AI for trading rights, then put their fleets back in to the trade node.
The AI are also hard coded to declare war with the player. If you are not at war with anybody, something triggers an AI faction to declare war on you. The longer you are at peace, the more likely it happens. It isn't even opportunistic. It could be a long time ally who's at war with somebody else and has no business opening a second front. It could be a tiny faction that has no hope of winning. It could be a faction that's so far away that all they can do is annoy you.
The more powerful you are, the more factions are triggered to declare war with you. And again, this is before realm divide. Previous Total War titles without realm divide did the same thing. These are all tricks designed to slow down the player's conquest. And it resulted in many players just ignoring diplomacy for the most part.
*finding anything by Jeff Atmajian* I still wish they'd kept Van Dyck, but I'm sure Atmajian will do well if he's got the support of Van Dyck. Can't go too wrong if he conducted "Dark Knight," lol. (pardon, guess he's just the conductor and not the composer; still, I've faith in them)
Praise goodness they're using an actual orchestra. Nothing can replace live musicians. >_<
Random: what do you guys think will be the ESRB/PEGI rating on the game? Something tells me it'll get an "M"/18+. It just looks darker, grittier, and potentially more sensually-themed than previous TWs.

cool video! im so anxious to play, i read so much about rome history in past months. But i think 18+ is too harsh, it doesn't feel mature enought, i doubt that it will have some cutscenes of killing or whatever with actual killing or blood.

Not even agent missions? (looked through some of the Shogun II assassination scenes and was surprised to find them very clean of blood O_O) Based on the original, live-action trailer, there's a lot more intrigue in Rome II, with three separate assassination scenes. The Roman era was pretty bloody too. I imagine if CA does murder missions, they be much more dirty than in games past.

Ye exactly like in Shogun 2, clean kills. I agree would be actually cool to see some "Blood and Sand" style in there, as you said Roman era was so messy from every perspective.
