I hit level 47 yesterday, after playing quite for some time the past 2 weeks. Comparing it to (at least what I remember of) other MMOs I played, it doesn't feel too fast to level. I'm trying to rush to endgame in any MMO though... played so many MMOs already that leveling seems like a chore more and more.
Curious for some of the endgame instances. So far playing WHM is quite enjoyable and some of the later dungeons have some nice mechanics, though they're still not very hard sadly.

See, but that's not true. Sure, there are limitations to AI but MMOs don't even bother implementing almost any AI at all. All enemies in MMOs do the same thing: mindlessly attack whoever has the most aggro. Bosses have the simple additional layer of having some kind of randomized special ability activation periodically and then maybe some kind of phases / enrage timers. They don't "think" though -- they just plow ahead.
There are many single-player games with party-based combat with enemies that have passable or even sometimes good AI. There's no reason that can't be applied to MMOs. Well, besides the fact that MMO development is necessarily about quantity not quality since a short MMO is a dead MMO and the standard trope is just Holy Trinity + Aggro Management.
PassiveAce wrote:but whose to say that the people who like FFXIV the way it is would like this hypothetical game that you and I would enjoy?
That's a good point, of course, but just because there are people out there who like the current MMO formula doesn't mean that people who don't like it can't talk about ways it should be improved. After all, I doubt MMO players would mind something new. I don't think the MMO players who enjoy just the social aspect and the concept of mindlessly advancing just to kill time care one way or another if the encounter design is made to require thought instead of just memorizing rotations and learning to spin plates. And the so-called hardcore players should welcome more challenge.

You're such a stereotypical MMO "hardcore" player that it's making me laugh right now. Your post amounts to accusing me of criticizing MMO tropes just because I'm not good enough to execute optimized rotations against hard bosses and then your ego knocks you so far off the rails you decide to berate tanks because their life is so easy compared to yours.
Yes, this is how MMOs are but it's not how they always will be. Game genres evolve and it's important to figure out what can be improved so they get better over time, not worse.

Tons of MMOs try to differ from this. Problem is, it fucking sucks. Look at GW2, the game is so fucking boring. You NEED the holy trinity, or something like it, because group based combat is fucking boring if you don't have an important role to play. When everyone can heal, do damage and tank, it becomes monotonous, you're just one douchbag among 10 who are playing a singleplayer game.
Not saying a good MMO can't exist without the holy trinity and aggro management... but it's definitely the best we have at the moment, all attempts to be "innovative" has failed.

Thanks. http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/playersdownload/na/You can use that link to download the game, since you are getting a box ver. you can easily just register the code for your account and play right away anyone got an EU mirror? IM going to go hunting for a copy from Game when i get back home from my holiday tomorrow. Apparently they have a lot of copies according to my friend. Would love to be able to download it for when i get back town!

It's certainly possible that someone could come up with a better MMO combat system, but no one has so far. Part of the RPG appeal of the game is having different roles for the players where they have a specific job to do. If the AI was "smart" they would always ignore the tank and kill the healers and then dps off first. That's not really difficult to program, it just would remove any point in having a tank role.

Anyone having trouble feeling immersion in this game? I like it and I imagine if I could get immersed in it I would really enjoy it but compared to WoW (which I am insanely bored of) I just don't feel connected to my character, almost like there is a second computer between me and my computer. Just not feeling that immersion at all.

Finally was able to pick this up! A tip to anyone looking to buy it i got mine, thanks to reddit!, on GMG with this voucher which'll make it 25% off: GMG25-4T2A7-4HOQ2

Yeah, Square has finally lifted their block of digital downloads, it can now be bought on their official website.

Oh brilliant! No need for that mirror now. I can just buy digitally when i get home tomorrow :D. Also means all the early game zones will have life in them with lots of new players! Hope the serves don't buckle again. Seems like a lot of people have been waiting for this.

Safe to say, one regrets uninstalling the beta... I assume there's some sort of torrent system for the download, so this is taking ages because of everyone downloading. Getting 0.2MB/s, so I will probably not be playing this until tommorow

Ahhh icic, ok ill just keep my fingers crossed and keep on waiting thanks!

Torrent system = goes faster for each downloader

Well square would be seeding the files, they're gonna have the same bandwidth going out to you. You can just pick up some more off the other downloaders

You can just pick up some more off the other downloaders That's the thing though, Square doesn't have unlimited bandwidth and people in general have far higher download cap than upload cap. It's very obvious with my download, jumps from 0.2MB/s to 3MB/s, then back down to 0.2MB after a while. Classic BT situation where you get a direct connection to a seeder, then back to leechers when that part is done.

That just means you are more used to western art style. I have the opposite problem as doesn't really feel the design of WoW.

OMG. Fucksakes, i wake up, check GMG, and FF14 website, and it said they were still out of stock/not selling. So, i go to my EB games, and get the last copy for PC. Get home, and its now available on GMG and the official site! Just my luck. O well, downloading now! cant wait to play!

I turned off my second monitor and it greatly improved my immersion.
