If you are enjoying your normal playthrough I would say keep enjoying it and finish that before looking to Long War.

It was a while since I last played EW so I don't currently have a playthrough going on. But at the time I remember that I enjoyed the game.

if you really, really enjoy the xcom gameplay, then go for long war. its better in every way. the only "negative" point i can see is that a campaign takes so long to finish that at times it can become frustrating to play countless mission without any noticable progression or even abort a campaign after 50+ hours because you fucked up.

but if you love killing aliens in turnbased tactical combat, play long war. its soooo good.

I also play a fair bit of EU4 (currently on a break before Common Sense releases), so I don't have an issue with long playthroughs. And I certainly like play-at-your-own-pace games

then i think you should play a normal playthrough of EW first. if you finish it and want to play more xcom, play long war.

Lots of stuff suggesting it's another XCOM game including the fonts used and the letters to spell Vigilio Confido (XCOM motto). Looks like we get an announcement tomorrow? This was posted yesterday:

There are also lots of rumors about this being an xcom apocalypse remake, but there's no solid evidence to back up that claim at the moment. The only thing that's really confirmed is that it's another xcom game.

I would be crying of joy if that were true... I really love Apocalypse and I always thought that it was an amazing concept and very underappreciated as far as XCOM games go.

Will you get any penalties by choosing not to complete the Gangplank mission?
China is one of the countries with the least panic for me currently.

Isn't that the mission that a lot of people complain about on reddit because of how silly a certain encounter is.

I'm actually unsure, I know you could simply not do it until you're ready in EU but that changed with EW, and stays that way in LW.

It's not really worth skipping, though. Getting a whole fusion core is actually really, really useful, plus the resources will set your campaign for the rest of it. Do you not have enough soldiers in your roster to deal with it, currently?

Currently, I have 3 snipers (but one of then has been worth his weight in gold so far), 4 supports (2 wounded), 7 heavies (1 wounded) and a grand total of 1 assault! Yes, out of 15 non-rookies I only have a single assault, that is not made easier by the fact that my only dead soldier so far was an assault as well (although I feel that was my fault ultimately). And yes, I've trained up as many rookies as I've been able to, but they all want to be heavies.

From my few (disastrous) attempt at the mission so far, as well as of the let's play I've seen of the mission (although that was the Long War version), I kind of feel that 2 assaults will be needed on Gangplank once you get past the initial two power sources

I've done it with two heavies, one support, one sniper and one assault before. The first two rooms are the hardest parts, though, since rockets barely reach across them, and having only one assault to break their position is sort of a hassle. It becomes a bit of a slugfest which is a bad idea to take against the aliens. Having dense smoke on the support really helped in the first room, though. Do you have upgraded armor? That helps a lot, as the sectoids shouldn't be able to one-shot you anymore, thus allowing your support to heal up wounds taken in the first firefight. The second room is a little easier, since there's less spots for the enemy to take. The doors with the cyberdisc are a pain but that's what the heavies are for. Two rockets with a sniper should take care of it.

I had almost forgot about the upgraded armor (But this is why I love strategy games, you can always improve in some way). Will require me to sell some stuff but hey, it's not the end of the world (and it's only May so far for me).
The cyberdisc was one of the reasons things went badly for me. But now that you mention it, two rockets plus a sniper should solve that problem.

Xcom as terrorists. Snakemen make their triumphant return. Infantry melee weapons. Stun drones. Some alien-human hybrid?

Also low cover still looks sketch as hell.

I do hope this title is just a placeholder though.

Hype!

Im interested in what they can do with the underground resistance scenario instead of global defense army. Could be an interesting chance.

nice, love that the world has a lot of character now, i was getting a nice tron vibe. i hope they take a lot from the long war mod and incorporate it into this next game (or revamp the move/shoot system). Overall, i'm very excited and i hope this means i have another chance to watch my boy Jake Solomon do more passion filled interviews
Have you considered the MMO-Champion forum? You are just as irrational and delusional with the right portion of nostalgic populism. By the way: The old Brood War was absolutely unplayable
