The only thing that a game requires to be played competitively is enough people who play and support the game and give a fuck. There's actually no other requirement.
Sadly Relic games do not get this many players/followers so darn.

Hey new guy, don't fuck up!
on topic I'd like to echo Iaguz's post about competition, as long as a game has a versus mode you can have competition.

the implication is that not enough people play and support the competitive scene because all the randomness makes it less fun.

Awesome news, I really enjoyed COH and the Eastern Front mod. I don't really see them designing it for competitive play though.
On May 04 2012 04:09 Pangolin wrote: "- Lots of snow. Snow slows down troops and tanks, but can also form cover." They must have pretty hard snow in Russia if it is bulletproof enough to serve as cover. Snow does give you cover from rifle fire. Of course you'd rather have sandbags or concrete but still better than nothing. Finnish army manual says 3 meters of new snow and 1.5 meters of tamped snow is enough to protect from (modern) rifle fire. This site (http://www.lonesentry.com/articles/ttt07/winter-fortifications.html) gives some insight on German winter fortifications in WW2.

I personally believe the random factor in CoH is heavily overblown by it's detractors. I've been involved in organizing a lot of the tournaments for CoH since it's initial release ( GR Tournies 1 - 22 ) and I have always witnessed that the better players did the best in the whole event.
Personally I think that the competitive player base isn't as big as SC2's is because there haven't been enough events since the game got released. With the increase in availability of livestreaming the competitive player base has increased and organizations other than GR are starting to host events. Very impressive for a 5 year old game.

The issue with COH was the balance that lead to idiotic gameplay; otherwise the game was great. Still have nightmares as Axis player dealing with Sherman Tanks that were invincible because of smoke and flaming nascar of death.

I would have been happy if my infantry actually went where I told them to go instead of running 30m away into unsafe cover and getting shot.

The guys here who say that CoH is "not made for competitive play" or anything simply don't have a clue what they're talking about. It's a different game than BW or SC2, thats for sure, but that doesn't make it any less competitive. The early game in the Wehr vs. US matchup is as skill- and artful of an rts-classic as is the BW ZvT matchup. So please, stop whining about randomness - it is actually one of the things that makes CoH an enormously exciting game to play. If you prefer StarCraft, go and play StarCraft. BTW: CoH does have a fantastic competitive community, albeit a small one, and it's an awesome spectator sport to watch - just check out the Saturday Night Fights series between KoreanArmy and Siberian Platoon (Tourney XXIII Finals) on Gamereplays!

I was better then SayNoToStim and DrHorse.
At least during the OF period, before Tales of Valour which is where HuK got his name with this game.

I jizzed and poured it in to a cup and mailed it to Relic so they could see how happy I am.

more info on pcgamer
- It’s set on the Russian front. You control the Soviets in their fight to repel the invading Nazi force. Snow plays a major part on the battlefield, falling and melting dynamically, and slowing your soldiers and tanks based on its depth.
- The game runs on the Essence 3 engine, the latest version of the graphics engine Relic have been updating and expanding upon for years.
- The cover system has been revamped, to function more realistically and allow soldiers to vault over obstacles.
- Line of sight plays a large tactical role, with the game’s fog of war based on what your soldier’s can actually see. Relic call this system “True Sight”, and it causes areas of the map to be grayed out and enemies within turned invisible by buildings, items of cover, or dropped smoke grenades.
- The Normandy landing that opened Company of Heroes (and Saving Private Ryan, one of its key inspirations), was the 23rd biggest battle of World War 2. “13 of the 15 bloddiest battles” happened on the Eastern front, points out Company of Heroes lead designer, Quinn Duffy. The game should represent those battles and their vicious scale, as much as it does minute infantry tactics.
- Just like the original, the scenery is highly destructible, and you’ll be given control of plenty of tanks and other explosive equipment. That includes barn-burning flamethrowers.
- There will be multiplayer, but Relic aren’t ready yet to talk about it.
- The game is due out 2013.

So fucking pumped, hopefully Relic won't screw it up.
About HuK, he was one of the best 2v2 players and an up-and-coming 1v1 player when the SC2 beta hit and he stopped playing. He wasn't the best by any means, but he went from nobody to pretty damn close in the course of a few months, which was impressive.

I really hope they are successful at upping up the scale of the battles, possibly increasing the food count. The thing that I didn't like about the original CoH was how low the food count seemed to be, though this is coming from someone who only played the single-player and random skirmishes vs AI. Plus, I used to be a C&C fan, so food counts have always been annoying for me.

considering what Relic did with DoW2, I doubt that they will abandon their low food counts...

Yeah, I heard that people's opinions of DoW2 are rather divisive.
However, I really hope that they follow through with their promises of trying to represent the scale of those larger Russian battles.

That'd make the game incredibly hard tho. I already had problems controlling all units somewhat decent with the current CoH foodcount. Upping it would require godly micro and multitasking...
Or it'd just lead to players blobbing their units up creating the WW2 version of a Protoss deathball :S

I say the harder this game is the better
