I reached level 9.5 as a dark elf and the first real zone (Stonefalls) had lots of content spread out over the terrain much like Skyrim and Oblivion. I just ventured off like I used to in those games and it was quite successful stumbling into a few quest areas and just exploring about. I did hit a bit of a wall in one quest line but that was because I'd gone too far and it wasn't at all bad to just wander back the other way and do more quests in that direction.
So yeah that zone had lots of content.
Something that really jumped out at me that was good is the Mage and Fighters guild questlines; you fight boss enemies in solo instances that actually had real difficulty to them. One of them had raid-boss like mechanics for just an early boss which I was thinking after I wiped a couple of times would really hold up the casuals... This kind of drawn out satisfying fight leaves me with a good feeling after playing the beta.

if the gameplay is good and you can do dungeons with friends...i would get this game in a heartbeat. hopefully things are good when it comes out!
btw, my friend had a gripe about the third person view and how it was implemented? no idea what he is talking about, can someone clarify? is there a difference from ESO and Skyrim in the character control and view? never had a problem with skyrim.

The gameplay is decent - it's not mind blowing or very new - so it's shaping up to be a well polished MMO in the elder scrolls world IMO.
Regarding the camera, it feels as though when you zoom out third person that it's a bit higher in inclination than skyrim - like more top down. This gives it a bit of a different more MMO-ey feel. You can go first person and that's the same as the other elder scrolls games though.

I was positively surprised about the combat gameplay feel after reading a ton of negative feedback, but then again I didn't play much and even that was mostly destro staff. Animations though were absolutely horrible which reminded me of original darkfall quality of wrong. Also the graphics looked 3-4 years old already for mmo's. Overall very unpolished game, which in my experience with dozens of mmo's has always spelled doom a month after release in p2p games followed by steady decline in to obscurity for 6months.
Not going to even comment on cashgrab style preoder bonuses and "day1 dlc" race shit.
thats my 2cents

Although I do plan on doing a full review of the game later on (after NDA for all has been lifted and not just a select few), I thought I would just throw out some opinions on the game. For one, it feels like an Elder Scrolls game. That is based on mostly the dialogue, design of areas, character, and general aesthetic of the game. With that said, there is a lot wrong with this game.
I for one was one of those people that ate up every bit of information I could receive. Elder Scrolls Online was the game I truly was waiting for; I was so excited for it. This was not due to extremely high expectations or anything, I just expected a game worthy of the title, Elder Scrolls. That is not what we are being given with this game (in my opinion). The excitement I had has not turned into a shadow of its former self.
The sort of things that killed the mood for me: the game is Pay-to-buy with a monthly subscription. Even with the business model, the game will include a store. Although I will not be getting an Xbox One, there is the required Xbox One Live Gold. So imagine this if you will; the Xbox One will have the purchase cost, the Live subscription, and the monthly subscription all the while Playstation 4 and Xbox One servers are separate. Now, if I had both console (many have both, but obviously not all), I would rather get it for the Playstation 4 over Xbox One. Meaning potentially, a smaller community.
Now, on top of all of that, even with a subscription model, we are not getting the full game. Unless someone spends additional money, they will not have the 10th race (Imperials). So now one race is behind a paywall which also can be part of the other alliances. And yes, other games have had content behind a paywall (like WoW with mounts and such) but having a race, with their unique sets of armor is just plain stupid. I personally know some that were planning on getting the Collectors Edition but now will not because of this practice.
The games animations still feel very stiff. I do not feel like there is at all any smooth movement going on which really kills the immersion. As I play, I feel like I am moving around as an upright log that can just-so-happen jump and run (do not get me started with the falling animation).
What ultimately worries me is that the game feels severely lacking still. And yes, it is still in beta but the game is being released next month. There is a limit to what can be done in that amount of time. It just seems like every new bit of news I hear regarding ESO is bad news.

I was positively surprised with this weekends closed beta after reading so many negative reviews. For me so far the game is indifferent from playing oblivion/skyrim (mechanically that is, content is not as rich obviously), and despite starter areas being extremely crowded I did not suffer any negative impacts in my gaming experience. I would pay for this game if dungeoning and pvp is designed above-mediocre, didn't do any dungeos yet, not sure if they are available or not in the beta? lvled up to 8 with woodelf archer/sorcerer.

I think the thing with the collectors edition is a bit overhyped. Yes it is stupid and yes they shouldn´t have done it but i don´t think it makes the game itself worse. And animations were never the strength of the elders scrolls.
The problem what i am seeing is that the game could be caught in the same place as Star Wars The Old Republic. The "men i would love it if it would be single player" place. From the looks of it it feels like the next skyrim that is kinda forced to be a mmo with the same mechanics. I have problems imaging the endgame content for it were mmo´s usually tend to get more numbers based instead of story based. I just don´t see it motivating me to raid an instance 10 times with a combat system thats designed to be a single player game.

That's right. The problem is, they excluded all the strength's TES games had but include all weaknesses (like shaky animation, clunky combat). The bad decision with the imperials doesn't make the game itself worse, you are right. But the game was already pretty bad before.

I have a key and I was wondering if I use it how long will I be able to play the beta?
|
I managed to get to level 6 , will try and get higher to create myself a better opinion. From what i've seen it is a elder scroll game ... when you can train a skill that evolves , the huge areas, lots of tradeskills , lots of items you can gather from the open world. When people complain about how long the first island took ... it lasted that long because the game had that option , you could have always rushed it. The way they wanna take more money is lame and might get them to lose more then they gain in the end, but i see no reason to compare it with the way Star Wars the Old Republic is. The problem with Star Wars is they have little pve at the end game, the pvp was only in the warzones at max level , you can't have that and expect people to pay a subscription for a single player game, because the game has one of the best leveling systems in all mmorpgs. A thing that i am sure of is lot of things said here are just to whine. I wanna see the end game content , that's the reason people will pay the fee every month not because how the leveling is.

I think you may have missed the point. The thing is with this game is that it is a culmination of many issues that has turned this game into a potential mess. The Collectors Edition on its own is not the issue; it is the having an entire race (a race that has its own benefits of free reign on alliances) being behind a paywall. While on top of that, there being a $59.99 pricetag, monthly subscription, and in Xbox case, Live Gold requirement. And then let us not forget the addition of a real money shop; all of those combined really hurts ESO as a whole.
The comment of animation not being a strength is in my opinion, sort of misguided. Yes, he focus has been on areas but that does not excuse a game that has been worked on for how long and being released in 2014 to have a rather lacking animation (one to a degree comparable to that of a Free-to-Play game). ESO should not be given a pass just because of the past, it should be based on the merit of the present. And this day-and-age with the backing of s large company, this sort of animation ought to be improved. I mean think about it, the point of an Elder Scrolls game is the immersion factor as an RPG. You are to take the role and become the character but when we have stiff animation, one where based on how you fall, you essentially float to the ground, the immersion factor goes out the window. Yes, it may not be the focus but as an RPG, a goal should be in alleviating that which detracts from the immersion (which is why background music in many games are so important for immersion).
I do get your point but I do not think it excuses what we have seen thus far (be it design decisions or business model). Honestly, the game does not feel like Skyrim. Granted, it does not feel like the traditional MMO's out there either. Bear in mind this is also experience of early game and not end game but the creatures and even quest feel lacking. There is no feel when you hit an enemy, especially since you pass right through them (which for an online game, I can to a degree understand). The quest do vary but there seems to be a good number that fall victim to the typical MMORPG formula.
The one good aspect is that it does not feel like a grind thus far. When I played TERA (although people's experience vary), I managed to reach the cap with almost zero grinding for experience. Granted, I did use PvP also for experience. But generally speaking, it felt like grinding for levels was not necessary. So far, it does not feel like a grind will be necessary. Although one necessity I did find were the Skyshards. When I first heard of the idea of including them and how they were in a sense, hidden, I was excited. As I played though, they ended up feeling more of a necessity than anything else. They will become one of those mechanics where they will all be mapped out and when you level, you will have to get all of them. Not so much a hidden treat but just almost like a side quest for each area.
Lastly I do want to point out that although it does seem like I am hating on ESO, I do so because I want it to succeed so badly. I criticize because I care about the series and it sucks to have the excitement I originally had diminish intro worry and potential disappointment. The game is still good, the game as a whole is designed well and without the typical bugs we expect from an Elder Scrolls game (probably since Bethesda are not the developers). I have written a long blog or post depicting the history of the Elder Scrolls game from beginning to present; watched the innovation and evolving nature of the game. So when I see this, I expect a lot because of their past. They did a lot right with this game, I just did not point it out here. Just mentioned "some" of my worries and issues.

I had heard nothing but bad things about this game but got to level 9 during beta and it's a ton of fun so far.

Can you play thief in this game like you could in Morrowind? As in, avoid all combat and just go about breaking in, casing, poaching, stealing and stuff?

I'm interested in getting this game if only to watch in glee as the hardcore role playing Elder Scrolls crowd gets lumped in one megaserver with the 'elitist jerks' MMO crowd. Hilarity will surely ensue.

The hilarity is already in the beta. I've been playing all weekend, and I get enough entertainment just from reading the chat..

Yeah the worse thing about this game is all the Elder Scrolls fans!
I have never played an Elder Scrolls game so am only judging this as an mmo, and it better than I was expecting.

I'm so damn conflicted on this game!
I played a couple more hours tonight and I just can't decide if it's something I care about. I have an OK time trying to figure out all the new classes, spells and theorycrafting builds but at the end of the day, I'm not really enjoying playing it all that much. I think I crave something new so bad I'm trying to force myself to like this rather dull game. I think after this weekend I earned a bit more respect for the title but in the end, I just don't think I can see myself getting value out of it with it's current price point and sub model. I think I'll hold off for a bit and see how the endgame and playerbase turns out.
