Oh hey. Played for a short time during...dunno, World 3? in Haven and Hearth. Thought the devs had some cool ideas (and some really bad ones but hey those can be stamped out right?).

I kinda viewed it as this MMO roguelike survivor world where you had all these things you can craft and a huge world to explore with all sorts of biomes and soil/water quality etc, and you also played to get stuff crafted/leveled while not get killed by larger villages/18 hour per day grinders/bears and the best defenses are being in a strong group or staying the hell away from everyone.

I think I gave up when the world I was in crashed.

Seems like the devs are terrible based on skimming this thread. Was Haven and Hearth an accident?

Ruling your own forums with an iron fist in order to...uh...project positivity (for investors I guess) is one thing. Being the hilariously (well not so much for you I suppose) spiteful corrupt dev using dev knowledge to fuck players over in a permadeath game is a whole new level of bullshit.

As a Haven player you'd appreciate this.

Haven and Hearth - outdated, non-marketed, etc etc.

But yeah, I've said it a dozen times in this thread - the concept is amazing. I would absolutely love a solid sandbox crafting/survival game. Haven seems to have been a fluke (and despite it being playable and fun, there were still a lot of flaws with it) because Salem is just bad in nearly every way imaginable.

Someone will come out with a good sandbox survival game at some point. Maybe even Paradox will pull the plug on Salem and the source code will be released and someone else can pick it up. Who knows. I await the day whenever it comes.

I don't know if you've seen this yet, but Civcraft is an extremely well-done open-world "Society simulator" minecraft server in the vein of h&h, salem, eve online etc. It has a bunch of (open source) mods (seen in that above link) designed to encourage players to live and work together (though greifing and aggressive playstyles are still very possible, just not on the scale as with normal mechanics), but otherwise leaves decisions up to the players themselves. It's really awesome. Has 100-200 players on at nearly all points of time. The admins are pretty fair and don't interfere with the game.

The server was just forced to reset (due to the map becoming compromised) but before the reset there were 10s of active towns and societieswith gobs of politics, conflict and drama. One of the most impressive things in the previous map was an expansive road and rail network in the nether that connected most cities in the server; each of the dots represents an active town, each of which generally had its own governmental structure, from monarchies to communes, democracies and anarchist/mutualist towns and more, (the communists tended to be the most organized, with a server-wide federation of communes). (this is an old version of the map, the newer version seems to no longer be hosted.).

dont bother, i'd just play haven instead (i am )
salem just isn't fun

i really don't know what happened, i feel like the game is far too focused on being a pvp game rather than a sandbox with pvp... i'm thinking that this is what paradox made them do, i remember at some point very early on the focus was on crafting, and then suddenly all the adverts/publicity switched to being about pvp. Also everything is far too grindy.

Paradox just pulled the plug on this game. CALLED THAT SHIT A YEAR AGO.

I knew they were losing a ton of money on it and I'm shocked it took them this long to back out.

I'm having a weak hope that the reset of Salem and merging of Salem and H&H servers means Haven and Hearth gets a new world shortly too.

New world, huge and really really good patch:

We've been developing for far longer than what is really kosher, and here's what's new:

As you all know we will with this update be making a complete reset, with a new world and updated character development systems. The changes that have gone into this patch are too numerous to really make explicit mention of each and every one of them -- there is a fair amount of new graphics, stuff, clothes, terrains, and whatnot -- but some major changes of note do deserve mention.

Inspirationals & Proficiencies
Studying inspirationals now requires a certain amount of 'Inspiration', which is passively generated by your character over time, regardless of whether you yourself are online or not. Your rate of inspiration gain is determined by your maximum level of Black Bile, combined with slight bonuses from the learning skills (Literacy, A Formal Education, Aristotelian Logic). Many inspirationals now also have multiple uses, and can thus be studied several times over.

There is now an invariance penalty to inspirationals in that; when you study an inspirational type that you have previously studied since your last level up, your proficiency pools are increased by 10%.

Gluttony & Food
The goal of consuming food in gluttony mode remains to gather enough points to reach the cap determined by your single highest Humour value, in order to thus trigger a level up of that particular Humour; however, the time-decay of the Humour meters, and the accompanying invariance penalty have been removed. Apart from adding points to the gluttony meters, consuming a food item in gluttony mode also adds a certain amount of the "Full & Fed-up" debuff, as well as reductions to certain categories of future food items consumed during that same gobbling "session".

The points gained from consuming a food item are reduced by all category debuffs relevant for the food item in question. If you have received some category debuffs, hovering over a food item will light up the debuffs that are applicable to the item hovered over. Notice that food items can belong to several categories. (For instance, "Wortbaked Wartbites" have the types "Slugs, Bugs & Kritters", "Flowers & Herbs", "Forage" and "Food".)

The 'Full & Fed-up' debuff lasts for a certain while -- depending on what types and how much food you ate -- and prevents you from entering gluttony mode again while it exists. This is the only effect of being 'Full & Fed-up'. The debuff ticks down and disappears regardless of whether you are online or not.

All category debuffs vanish when you exit gluttony mode. While gobbling, you cannot have any container open other than a table (and no other character can have the same table opened at the same time).

Many food items now also have multiple uses, but these are only relevant when eating to restore Humours. A food item needs to be completely unused to be possible to be consumed in gluttony mode, and consuming the item in gluttony mode will consume the item entirely, regardless of how many uses the item still has left.

Siege & PvP
The Crime debuff has been changed in several ways.
  • The crime debuff now increases as you commit crimes against private claims. You have one crime debuff per claim you have committed crimes against.
  • The crime debuff disappears after a certain fixed time, determined by how many crimes you have committed (being one day per crime, up to a cap of 14 days).
  • Committing a new crime when you have a crime debuff against the claim in question will reset the countdown on the crime debuff.
  • The cost of each crime you commit is scaled up with the size of your Crime debuff. (The more crimes you commit, the more expensive crimes become)
  • You can now regenerate Humours and log out even with a Crime debuff.
  • You can only ever have five crime debuffs at any one time.
  • You cannot select a new Homestead while you have a Crime debuff.
  • If you have evidence against a perpetrator, you can use those "scents" to reduce the crime buff versus the private claim upon which said perpetrator has his homestead.


Defensive installations have also been changed in that each defense now deals Base damage * (1/N) damage, where N is the number of clustered defenses. The point being that your defenses are 'saturated' from the first installation on, and that their total damage dealt does not increase with the number of defenses built. The idea is to remove or reduce the incentives to spam defenses everywhere.

Defenses located on a private claim do not react to crimes committed on an overlapping village claim.

Walls are significantly cheaper.

Previous Purchases & Promos
All previous purchases should be available at the bank/post office respectively as soon as you log in.

Promotional items may or may not be reissued at our leisure.


Closing Thoughts
We are very happy to have been able to destill and provide something to you from our many thoughts and discussions and trials and errors, that we think might be more playable and palatable than the first iteration of Salem ultimately turned out to be. This is our first playable patch since God knows when (April? May?), and loftar and I are extremely happy to be able to deliver it to you. Notice that all values and numbers that went into this redesign are guesstimates, and there might be plenty of problems and/or broken interactions. Should you come across any, feel free to report them.

Anyhoo. For better or worse it feels good to be here where we now are. Thank you all for your support, for being here, and please consider throwing the store a dime or two if you can.

Putting aside the fact that the two developers are both horrible people in real life I would possibly be inclined to play this with a TL group. TL groups make everything better.

Day 1: I spawn in the wilderness five times. All five times I end up in the middle of a mountain as far as the eye can see in all directions. Reroll new character.

New character gets a passable spawn location so I start gathering food. After about an hour I am able to attack small woodland critters. I find a turtkey and punch it. Turkey KOs me. One of the changes they made is that you start off with 200k Learning Points and every time you study an item that goes down. You regain them at a base rate of 0.7 per second. If you get KOed you reset to zero. On a new character this is devastating and pretty much means you have to reroll. Reroll new character.

New character spawns. About fifteen minutes later a group of pay to win players come marching by. There are six of them, all in metal helms and some leather armor with dual swords. They murder me. Reroll new character.

I finally get a decent spawn location. All seems well. I march off to find some berries in a forest. Tab out to check this thread to see if anyone else is playing. Tab back in - bear has mauled me to death. Reroll new character.

Another acceptable spawn location. It's late so I am only able to get a few skills up. Waiting for Day 2.

Day 2: Level up a few skills. Get cockblocked by the new learning points system. Spend most of the day idle because you can't really play as a hermit anymore. Groups have a massive advantage.

Caught a lot of fish. Built a house. Killed a lot of rabbits and crickets.

Servers went down for a restart. Standing in my base when they went down; all is well. 90 seconds later the servers come back up. I immediately log back in only to find that someone has managed to pillage my claim while the servers are offline. All of my fish and curios are looted, my sawbuck is stolen along with my sled, and the rabbit hides I had drying at 98% were now reset back to 0%. All of this on my claimed area.

Doesn't seem possible to get the skills required to steal on a claim this fast - plus the servers were offline when it happened. Pretty sure the developers did it. Onward to Day 3.

*Edit* I have a better question: what are the developers' goals here? Like, what sort of game do they envision the players playing? What kind of playerbase do they want, and how badly do they want to make money off of them?

Lol. I'm glad someone is reading this. Sadly I am actually having fun in the game right now. Not because it's gotten better but because it's been over two years in development and nothing at all has really changed other than non-broken things being made broken. I find it quite hilarious.

My goal is going to be to see how long I can survive on this new character before getting massacred. It's going to be really random since some people are spending hundreds of dollars at the store buying silver and they're already at twice the stats of me + weapons + skills. You can always tell who their alts are in town, too, because they sit there 24/7 buying anything and everything from mushrooms (food is a HUGE hinderance early-game now since you can't eat raw mushrooms anymore and berry spawns have been massively reduced. I live off fish) to hay to every piece of leather anyone makes. Basically they open their wallets in order to never have to leave their base. About 90% of my time is spent wandering around for food and materials so being able to remove that is such a massive advantage.

Then you have the group factor, too. Because of the new LP system you can't just learn anything. You have to pick what skills you want and only go for those. This greatly benefits a group setting because everyone can learn different skills. Right now, as a hermit, I have about six crates full of tumbleweeds and other good curios but I can't use them because I don't have the LP to use them.

Like I said though it's entertaining and when the time comes (again) and I see a small army of pay to winners walking towards me (again) I'm going to fall out of my chair laughing because they spent real money on this garbage :D

You're welcome to join me if you'd like. I have enough curios to instantly bump 6-7 people up to the same stats as I'm at (another thing with the new system; people that make a dozen alt accounts and bots have a massive advantage too because one character can easily farm enough curious for half a dozen others at the start).

Day 3: I decided to use this day to explore since I am waiting on my learning points to rebuild before I can actually do anything new. Spent three hours hunting beavers. Found zero.

Killed two turkeys. I'm not sure why. They were there and I had Uppercut hotkeyed. Things just fell into place.

Found a few neighbors. Was visited by three other players today. The first one told me he was friendly and lived down the river from me. I asked him which direction down the river and he quickly loaded up two of my crates onto his sled and ran off. The next two visitors both threatened me with death in Russian. Nostalgia.

On the up side I found a house with no claim or fence. Stole everything I could and made my way back home. Passed another house on the way, except this one wasn't a house. It was a village. And not just any village but the village of the largest group in the game (MM Tribe).

Anyone who played Haven W7 with the TL group is probably laughing uncontrollably right now because in that game we had three spawn locations. First, we spawned next to the largest hostile group in the game. Relocated. Few days later we find out we've relocated next to the second largest group in the game and they are giving us 24 hours to move or we get killed. Relocated. This time we're in brand new chunks of the map - I was literally the first player in the game to discover the map had been expanded and so naturally I took advantage of it. Didn't stop the third largest hostile faction from doing the same two days later and moving right next to us. Everyone quit (I think).


In order to save myself I was extorted into swearing my allegiance to them and paying them 100 silver per day in a protector's fee. I feel so dirty. But, I'm alive... so there's that. Servers go down for a restart right after I get back to base.

Servers come back up and my claim is actually intact this time. We do have a slight problem though... my base is overrun by beavers and turkeys. Seven beavers, 11 turkeys. All spawned inside my tiny 20x20 claim in one big clump. Can't kill them so I'm forced to log off until they despawn.

Oh hey! Those learning points that I've been waiting all day for. I finally have enough to get my new skill. The last inspirational I need is a Devil's Wort. Oops. Clicked the wrong button and it poisoned me and KO'ed me. All learning points and current progress reset to zero. Maybe Day 4 will be better.
