Also, how does the alphabet rating go when viewing parameter bonuses for weapons?
The rating goes from S-A-B-C-D-E. The higher ones are significantly better than lower ones. C or less is not very good scaling, B is ok, A is great, and S is insanely excellent, for the high ranks one step up results in much much much better scaling.
There is an awesome katana (Iaito) at the start of blighttown that you have to jump to, keep left from the depths entrance until you can see the swamp area and the bonfire and it's there. Another popular dex weapon is the bandit's knife, which has high crit damage(backstap/parry riposte) drops from the undead assasin/hollow thiefs in lower undead burg(the area before the Capra Demon boss, which also has dogs), though it may take awhile as they drop the hollow thiefs armor pieces too.
As to your earlier questions, yes Pyromancy is mostly fire magic, but there are a select few ones that aren't, like the power within buff, pyro's only scale off the level of your pyro hand. Stats usually don't get raised above 40, rarely 50 because of severely diminishing returns, you can already use most weapons with the 20 str and 14 dex you have. Dex also slightly raises cast speed on most spells (though not all of them, buffs don't go faster for example). Attunement gives you spell slots, but you should probably stop at 16 or 19, and maybe 23 if you push it, but it takes so long to get more slots after it isn't worth it. If you want sorceries, Int has good stopping points at 15/16 for most spells, though you can go higher(32-50) if you want to be a dedicated mage. Miracles are more support, some people get 12 faith just to use heal, or 30 for weapon buffs. Also never ever get resistance. For more on stats you can check the wiki's here and here.

I made a dex guy after my tank and spank character.
My weapons of choice were:
uchigatana by killing merchant +10 -> Chaos Blade (Only use this now in pvp or bosses) seems to hit like a truck at +4 with some humanity.
washingpole +14 bought it from the merchant in blighttown before I killed him.
I also have a
fire uchi lightning uchi chaos uchi
I bought a bunch of uchis for 5k a pop before I killed the merchant. I liked the R1 moveset and it looks cool so I stocked up. ^_^.
Someday I'll go back for the Iatio, I really want to try that as well.
I mostly use the Washingpole +14 in PvE for now.

Massive thanks for the responses here! I'll try to obtain the Iaito since I used a katana in demon souls for a large portion of the game.
This game isn't so clear on which area I should advance. I've killed the butterfly boss and been goofing around in the new londo ruins after that only to find that I cannot go further since I don't have a key. What's the next logical area to progress?
|
you can go to blight town next
|
Yeah I was there before the forest area. Should I progress to the queelag spider boss? It was pretty tough when I tried the first time.
|
yes you have to kill quelaag to advance further. If you took the shortcut to blight town you might as well kill the gaping dragon before queelag

The biggest difference between the Iaito and Uchi/Washing Pole is that the Iaito has a quickdraw on both of its heavy attacks. It's way more badass for that attack alone.

And that the washing pole is only used by giant vaginas.

Oooooooh wow.
I tip my hat to you, sir. Well done.

I was thinking and another reason why I think I liked Demon souls and Dark souls so much is prob it feels so much like Onimusha. Such a good game series was that .
|
Despite having 200+ hours in Dark Souls and having both the ps3 and PC versions.. I have never actually finished the game. I usually stop at bed of chaos as my second last boss on my characters and just PvP/Co-op/make a new build. Fought it for the first time today trying not to cheese it. God damn. No wonder the developers apologized for this boss :/ Ended up using the quit game -> reenter boss fog trick. Anyone know an easy way to kill bed of chaos without using that trick to kill it?
|
If you have a good stability shield you can just walk to the right and kill that part and walk to the left while hugging the wall and shoot it with an arrow. After that you just have to bait the big arm swings and then jump in the hole.
|
Shield stability is useful, as the above post mentioned. Since you really don't need a good weapon, spend some equip load on a nice shield for the fight and use a dinky weapon. Block constantly.
Honestly the boss would be a lot worse if it reset completely when you died ><

The fun part about ng+ is that you can literally do whatever you want( unless you are making optimal pvp character). You literally dont run out of souls and you can upgrade all kind of different weapons and buy different gear as much as you like.
So basically the thing you SHOULD do is to decide what you feel like doing.

So finally found time to start playing this. What kind of build / playstyle would you guys recommend for someone who wants the most rewarding experience possible? Right now, I am using Winged Spear / Hollow Warrior Shield and clearing Undead Burg to the first boss (have not faced him yet). I am comfortable with backstab and riposte.
I plan to stop at SL 200 for PvP (research shows that this seems to be the new metagame from SL 125).

Imo playing with <25% equipment load with dark wood grain ring and using fast weapons ( katanas, balder sword) with high dex and alot of dodging ofcourse is very rewarding. Most people use very heavy armor and just tank their way through. Its still fun ofcourse because dark souls is an awesome game but its bland compared to dodging everything and using parries and backstabs.
