Even then it was still a crazy ass fight since Ornstein's spear can go through Smough's stomach to stab me in the ass.
Instead of doing it the hard way and try to solo them as I did, I'd really recommend people just to summon Solaire and one other white phantom.
One weapon. Crystal ring shield. Absolutely destorys them both.

It just depends on how much time you wanna spend on it I guess, I spent 2 days trying to kill them to no avail. Then a few days later I killed them on my first try solo. Eventually youll just get the pattern down and youll know when to strike or dodge and a boss becomes easy.

I just picked this up over the weekend but I want to add in all the optimization mods before I start playing. Can someone post the most effective and useful mods and I'll add them into the OP? Things like the framerate cap removal, the proper screen scaling, I believe I heard about some camera optimizations and an alternate control layout too, etc.

I dont really see a better way they couldve done it and it works perfectly imo, just gotta get used to it.

DSFix by Durante does most of what you want. All the beautification things are in there with many more options than anyone could want. Get it at Dark Souls Nexus
As for the control scheme, assuming you are using a controller (if not, I cannot emphasize how much better using a controller is) I didn't see much need to move things around. However I know that there are drivers (system level, not specific to Dark Souls) which will allow you to reassign the buttons on the controllers if you so desire.
EDIT: The settings for DSFix are where the meat of the optimizations happen, I can't see my current settings until I get home, but make sure you go into that file and edit things to your liking. There are tons of things in there that are not enabled by default.

Also a quick note about the Frame rate cap removal. Last I heard, though maybe subsequent versions of it have remedied this problem, when you remove the frame rate limit certain animations sometimes have problems with the increased frame rate. I recall the ladder sliding animation specifically causing issues. Of course you can avoid that by not sliding down ladders =)
If you were wondering why animations would be affected by frame rate, that is because the game was designed like a fighting game with frames of animation corresponding to invinciblity, hit boxes, etc. So when the frame rate is sped up all the animations need to be sped up also. If you let the frame rate float around you potentially make animations that should act in a fixed manner, have different results depending on the framerate. A big bummer sometimes when a split second between a roll can kill you. All of that said however, if you keep the frame rate stable (as most modern machines should be able to do ignoring a couple zones -- I'm looking at you Blightown), then you should be fine outside of the weird animation problems which may or may not still exist in this version of the mod. (I haven't updated mine for a couple versions now since I'm happy with how it is).

That bug got patched over a year ago, before the pc version was even announced. It just does a fixed small amount of damage now, and doesn't scale off your weapon.

The dsfix others have linked(also here originally) has the higher resolution and framerate unlocking and many other features, and is the basis for a lot of mods that have come out. Jsyk, if you do unlock the framerate, there are some unconfirmed reports of people being banned from gfwl. I doubt it's actually happening, but I figured I'd warn you of the possibility anyway. I think the camera optimization you mention is about the mouse, the link mpa provided has a link to a mouse fix, but controller really is highly recommended for this game anyway.
Good luck, and Prepare to Die. A lot.

The FPS fix is often construed as a speed hack (as it basically is) by the service.
Its also not an unlocker, you either get 60 or 30 FPS with no in between.

Can anyone point out some general tips as how I should level up my stats? I'm lvl 23 pyromancer and I've been upping endurance to about 19, vitality bout the same and dex 14, strength 20. I'm not a total nooblet since I played through Demon souls once before I started this game so I'd like to play a little harder build. What I'm looking for is a sword+shield warrior with a lot of supplementary spells.
Any advice?

I'm not an expert on builds but most spell+sword builds use weapon buffs like Crystal Magic Weapon. It depends if you want sorceries or miracles. Miracles have access to the strongest weapon buff in the game which is Darkmoon Blade but it only has 1 cast. Depending on if you're using miracles or sorceries, you would invest into their respective stats.
In my opinion Str builds are a lot easier because they can wield those massive shields and block everything in pve where as Dex builds require a bit more dodging. Also your build depends on what weapon you want to end up using. If it's a Dex weapon then raise your dex to 40 and enough str to one hand it and I guess you would do the same for a Str weapon but with dex. Only do this if you plan on not going the elemental route.

Hey, big thanks for the quick response!
In Demon souls, I used the "demon magic" and I was planning on using that also in Dark souls, so no miracles. Using sorcery requires a catalyst, amirite? So into what category does pyromancy fall? Is it just some sort of fire magic, can it be powerful?
I'd like a dex build more since shields don't do shit when fighting large bosses. If I invest in dex do I have any use for strength (if I go dex of course a dex weapon) bar being able to use heavier weapons?
Also, what is the elemental route?
|
Str doesn't do much for you if you're on a dex build besides letting you hold weapons and shields. Never played demon souls so I'm not sure what demon magic is. Pyromancy requires no stat investments and all magic is powerful. However, I'd say the new DLC dark sorceries are the strongest and that requires Int to use. Sorceries use a catalyst, Miracles use a talisman and pyromancy uses a pyromancy flame.
Elemental just means to element your weapon at the appropriate blacksmith. Once you put fire/lightning/chaos on your weapon you no longer get any stat scaling so pumping dex or str for that weapon no longer gives you extra damage.
|
Thanks for the tips. About the dex weapon, is there any weapon of that kind to be found in the early stages of the game? I just killed the gaping dragon a while back and cleared out of blighttown back to the firelink shrine.
Also, how does the alphabet rating go when viewing parameter bonuses for weapons?

^Balder Side Sword, one of the most popular dex weapons in the game. It has B scaling in dex and has awesome moveset. It can be dropped by Balders near the Gargoyle bosses. The droprate is quite low but you can also find Balder Shield which is also awesome.
The scaling ratings from best to worst S,A,B,C,D,E,no scaling. The better scaling, more damage by a point in stats.

Yes, the Balder Side Sword is a solid choice all around, it's a popular weapon for both PvE and PvP.
Another option is to kill the Burg merchant in order to get the Uchigatana or join the Forest Covenant to get access to Shiva's shop in the Blighttown Swamp, he also sells an Uchigatana so you won't have to kill the merchant if you buy it from him.
The Iaito is also somewhere in Blighttown but I consider it a pain in the ass to get. :\

That fight is made trivial by using sorcery.

Wait.
I'm tiring of these responses. Just because there's an easy way to do certain things doesn't mean you must, or that you even can. That's the whole point...

Everything in this game is made trivial by sorcery.
