I chose to make my garg halbred +5 lightning over zwei because I just love the moveset and attack speed way more. A friend of mine went max lightning zwei though and really likes it. For my "STR" weapon I plan on getting a BKGA and making it +15. We will see what happens though! A BKGA only goes to +5 since it's a twinkling titanite upgrade. Which is good because it's easier to upgrade. It's also got one of the best movesets, in my opinion. The reach is both exceptionally long and wide with it. A few weapons are slightly stronger, but I like the bkga moveset much better, and it still easily staggers and does massive damage + Show Spoiler + Oh right, whoops! What str weapon would you recommend I upgrade for now? It doesn't seem like I can get a BKGA until I get all of the lord souls. I currently only killed Nico so far. I really love moveset on Garg Halbred, but I'd like another non-lightning weapon for some mobs. I'm having a hard time deciding what to use 1) because nothing seems that good, 2) I dislike the movesets!
Hmm, well one of my personal favorites is the large club, it has a pretty varied moveset, low requirement(26 str), only weighs 11, and poisons, though it's not easy to get. You have to kill those club(not boulder) barbarians in blighttown until they drop one. Normal attacks(1h or 2h) are standard club smash, 1h strong attack is their horizontal forward lunge with a follow up second attack, 1h roll attack is a spin swing, 2h roll is the hammer ground smash, and 2h strong attack is their big down smash.
I like Demon's Great Machete too (normal attack horizontal swings, roll attack is sword poke, strong attacks are jumping downward slashes), drops from lesser Capra Demon down in Demon Ruins much easier to get than large club, though str requirement is 40 (also demon's greataxe can be farmed down there from taurus demon's, mostly standard greataxe moves, 1h heavy wide swing with rising followup is fun for launching though and 2h heavy smashes enemies to the ground).
Butcher knife has a kinda fun moveset(mostly horizontal swings, but 1h strong is a running swipe and 2h holds horizontal overhead and then smash down like giant skeletons do) and it restores a little hp on hit. If you got a sack helm from the butchers you can trade it for a Demon's Great Hammer too, but you'll get that on new game + anyway from asylum demon. Greataxe is good for damage, but I don't always like standard greataxe moveset besides roll spin swing if I don't feel like smashing a lot, sold by sen's fortress merchant(32 str).
Hope that helps, tried to give recommendations with varied movesets.

Yeah my strength is 49 right now, I wanted to get it to 50 for the Dragon Great Axe or w/e it's called that I chopped off of the Gaping Dragon. I have no idea how to build my character and I've just been winging it. I feel like a fool for not using all that strength. I dipped vitality and endurance to 30 and just maxed out strength. I'm SL 80 atm. Ok I have Demon Great Machete and Axe. Which one should I upgrade for my high str?
They're both pretty close in damage, it's mostly a preference on the moveset(for me at 46 str, both at +14, GA 652 GM 637). The Demon's Greataxe is the stronger one, has S scaling but less base damage, still ends up higher due to high requirement, it's the strongest physical weapon in the game. I think the Machete has a slightly more versatile moveset because it has horizontal swings and more reach with sword poke.
Greataxe moveset 1h and 2h normal attacks are just repeated vertical smashes. Roll attacks are spin swing. Backstep/run attacks are running vertical smash. 1h heavy is a really wide horizontal swing, and upon second heavy input rising attack that launches. 2h heavy is a delayed groundsmash that floors people and you may have hyper armor during it.
Machete moveset 1h and 2h normal attacks are horizontal swings. Roll attacks are sword poke. Backstep/run attacks are running vertical smash. 1h and 2h strong attacks are jumping smashes with slight charge time, might also have hyper armor.

Hooray, beat the game! Last boss was too easy IMO. I think Bed of Chaos was the hardest boss, only one to kill me more than twice. Fuck getting one shotted from falling!
Can't wait to start on NG+, or try out a pyromancer. Glad I gave the game a second chance, I had basically no quarrels with it. The cursed thing pissed me off so bad when I first tried it, but the game feels so much nicer now for some reason. I didn't get cursed once so maybe that's it, lol. Fuck curse! Great game.

Is there a guide on how to play this game without controller?
|
There's nothing quite like some tryhard lagstabber invading you for the 2nd time only to get ganked by me as soon as he spawns.
I'm looking for PvP, bro, not kindergarten.

just go to options and rebind the keys? Not sure what you would need a guide for.

umm Don't use mouse? Have played any amount of fps before? (i.e. be used to hitting keys around wasd or ijkl) Rebind the keys?
If all else fails... Buy a ten dollar controller?
This game is something that takes getting used to regardless of whether or not you have a controller. Even with on ps3 I played for several hours before I got used to the controls and comfortable with them, and much much longer to truly master them.

Chances are good that with if you own any game console you can use it with your PC with a $3 accessory.
I for one use my Playstation 2 Controller for Dark souls. Works great.
The PS2 controller is WAY better than any controller you are gonna get for 3 bucks.

Yeah do the DLC stuff first definitely!

any tips for someone starting it up for the first time.
i got the fixes installed and the game running perfectly + 360 controller.
played a bit on a knight w/ the firebomb game seems pretty difficult, right down my alley.
so prob gonna roll a new character now that i got a taste.

best starting class is probably a knight or bandit. cant do much wrong with those two.

You move on to New Game+ instantly after you kill Gwyn, so keep that in mind.

Starting class is almost completely irrelevant. There is no "best" starting class. Although both those classes do start with a nice shield(heater shield being only 100% starter with fast parry, and spider shield having the poison block), but you get them both early anyway. The pyromancer starts at the lowest level though, but there still really is basically no difference in starting classes. It's basically just where you want your stats to start at, which means little once you level up.

There is one armor I screwed myself on going to the dlc too fast(and it may have already happened to you too), but you can always get it in new game + as well. + Show Spoiler +Dusk's Armor, the Antiquated Set, the crown of which boosts magic damage by +20% at the cost of magic damage taken +30%, which appears where you rescue Dusk and where you enter the dlc from in Darkroot Basin. It appears after you save her from the gold golem, restart the game/reload area and summon her. I rescued her fairly early before I raced to the lordvessel. I didn't go get it right away and just continued on as fast as I could to access the dlc, and then it never appeared once the dlc portal was active, and doesn't appear ever when I go back.

Practice dodge roll, it's very good, gives you some invincibility frames. Keep your shield up when in doubt(you can sometimes drop your shield for a moment between enemy attacks if you need more stamina, though that's more advanced).
Be deliberate with your combat. Don't button mash, inputs will be queued a little. Mistakes will be punished, so you can't be careless with your approach, take your time, watch your opponents, and be deliberate in your actions.
Upgrade your equipment when you can. This is far more important than levels are. Get your weapon strong first, then upgrade your armor(for less damage taken) and maybe shield(for less stamina drain). Early upgrades and materials are cheap so don't worry about locking yourself into one set of equipment.
Don't worry too much about losing souls. Early players may feel like they got set back if they lost 10k souls. It's a pittance. You'll get so much later that everything you earn early means nothing. A million souls is a decent amount, losing 30k early may be discouraging, but really doesn't matter much. Don't be afraid to kindle bonfires either, humanity farming is very easy now in pc version. Just watch out for invaders(other players entering your world to kill you) if you reverse hollowing though.
Hope those tips help.

Well my first play through is a wrap. I think i ended up getting way too strong for normal game as everything became extremely easy. I used a +4 lightning garg halbred for awhile and in the end a +14 great axe. Only until Gwyn did I get my BKGA and leveled it to +5 so it hasn't got much use yet. I was a str/end/vit build and wore havels set. I was able to tank and spank most bosses quite easily near the end. I think im SL82 right now. I basically just casted power within every boss fight, ran in with shield up tanked a few swings, switch 2h big hit with +14 great axe, 2-4 of those and the boss would die.
I think the hardest boss near the end of my run was manus in the DLC content. He took a few tries to get right. This game is really amazing and I'm happy that I played it. I'm not sure I have the motivation to NG+ or to make my dex/int guy just yet. I know I will someday though!
GG Darksouls best single player game I've played in over a decade!

Yeah I agree. I had the same build and the end stuff was way too easy. Gonna try NG+ later today, that should make it a lot less faceroll.

For my first playthough I used cleric and master key so I could go down into valley of drakes below the firelink shrine and get Astora's Short Sword. It is a sword that scales with str/dex/faith at C level. The damage is 80/80/0/100 and only requires 14 faith to wield With two points into dex cleric can wield them very early and they are very very strong. The shield has 100% dmg reduction which makes the game so much easier to learn. Just make sure when you go down to the sleeping dragon you don't have any souls on you because he will kill you as soon as you get near. Just grab the two items in between his arms.
Also the expansion dlc is coming out oct 23 for north america and oct 24 for europe on consoles with a $15 price tag.
