Co op is basically you help him kill bosses. You can help him through entire maps as well if you want. But you'd need to resummon him after boss fights. You can literally play the entire game together (just put the summon sign down in weird places so no one else sees it.). You'll also be invaded while playing as co op though so you'll get to fight pcs as well as npcs.

You can do everything in the game co-op, except maybe the arena(idk). The trick is just getting to summon the right guy. You have to tell your buddy where you dropped your sign, which should be somewhere others won't summon him first, and then also replace it every 2 min or so to cycle it through servers until he sees it. Once you've summoned a phantom, you can go anywhere in the game and do anything, but they dissapear if they help you beat a boss, and get some souls and a soft/loose humanity(and a sunlight medal if you also summon a sunbro, even if it's just solaire). Of course, just going to darkroot or the kiln of the first flame and pvping with him by your side will be very fun on its own.

There's also an enemy that drops sunlight medals which is usally faster(souveneirs of reprisal and eyes of death are also farmable). + Show Spoiler + The non-attacking bugs in the Demon Ruins->Lost Izalith shortcut, just before the Demon Firesage boss room. The door can only be opened from the other side, unless you are chaos servant +2. There are a couple bugs on both sides, but it's best to open it, as the one respawning titanite demon is shortly after to farm demon titanite, and also past that are chaos eater enemies to farm red titanite slabs from(each slab type only drop rarely from 1 enemy each, regular and red are alright to farm, but white and blue are just a pain).

What you mentioned about having no idea where to go does indeed happen a few times throughout the game. But honestly the most I was ever lost was after I first landed at Firelink. Once you get into undead burg the game is fairly straightforward if you pay attention to cutscenes/NPCs well enough. Don't be afraid to 'Talk' to anyone you run into. yes, I realized those are play written after a few troll messages. I did waste about 5-10 minutes searching for the 'hidden ring ahead' ~_~ lol, this game is addicting I want to get off work and play! Yeah I think youd be better off doing exactly the opposite of what all the messages say. Quite frequently I find messages advising me to use exactly the wrong type of fighting style to use vs a specific boss, dem troll meng dem trolls... The only "real" usefulness I find out of them anymore is, as I mentioned, a couple laying in front of hidden areas/fade walls on subsequent playthroughs. I still read almost all I happen to pass over though, out of habit. They can be quite funny. My experience has been rather the opposite funny enough. Some of the messages saved me quite a few times especially a certain "jump off here" message.

I only got to play for about 1h30m last night but i made no progress, just souls and levels. I got owned like 4-5 times by the big centaur boss in undead area, and the black knight guy like 4-5 times as well. I'm having a hard time using my special attacks. leap attack kick specifically. I tried to read how to do it online but I'm either awful or it's really difficult. I also just learned you can jump last night after 4 hours playing. ~_~

And you learn by dying, so it's really more of a dying curve. But after you die enough to figure out what you can and can't get away with, you start to get better. The starting areas are incredibly easy after your first playthrough, but the first time they can be some of the hardest because you're still figuring everything out. In short, you should be bad at first, just keep at it because you can get better and do it. Eventually.

You can play a style that doesn't need them at all. The kick is super helpful sometimes though, for enemies who turtle behind shields. I dunno what to tell you about controllers, but learning to do the attack + direction stuff (for kick etc) is pretty standard stuff in console land.
