Speedlink Xeox. Same layout as the original controller, half the price, better feeling imo. Need to setup x360ce once for all your games.

If you're having a hard time vs some enemies, try to get as much poise as you can while being able to walk fast. (stone armor/ elite knight set comes to mind)

Yeah, that bonfire is dead to you. Not really a big deal though, but kinda annoying for later parts of the game.

Well, I wouldn't say it's specialty, but it's not that simple. Roleplaying in whatever armor you want works pretty well because of how balanced the game is though.

If you just want to take less physical damage(which means you made a mistake and got hit) then you could just go for the highest armor possible. However, just because the heaviest armors have more physical defense and bleed resists, and far more importantly poise(with poise you can even heal with estus flasks while getting hit and not be interrupted) doesn't mean they are "better" per se, as there are many things to consider with armor.

The heavier armors generally have good fire(black iron set is strong for fire and bleed, weak for lightning) and lightning defenses(smoughs/giants/stone), though it's not always the case that it's miles above other armor, as the thiefs starting legs(black leather boots) ends up with very high lightning defense when upgraded(over 30 at +9), and only weighs 3.0. It's suprising how good some light armors can be, and there can be variances within a set too, for example elite knight chest is some of the best def for its weight, but the elite knight helm is much worse for its weight.

Magic defense is much higher on logans/witches set, and poison defense is also better on light armors. Most heavy armors also do not have curse resistance, except for havels, which also has good magic def for heavy and the highest poise, chest alone has 47 poise. For best defense you really have to choose the armor for the situation more than just the heaviest armor, while staying at the burden for your preferred roll speed.

Almost none of the armors are "bad" though, and since the game is so balanced, you can pretty much roleplay in any set and be perfectly fine, especially if you are any good at dodging. If naked lvl 1 runs are possible, then any armor is viable

How do the armor values work. 30 lightning resistance, is that 30%?

No, that's only for shields on their block stats (if a shield blocks 30 lightning, then a blocked attack deals 30% less lightning damage).

It works the same as physical defense, but I don't think anyone knows the exact algorithims for how defense affects damage taken. Even on a lvl 60 char, you can get over 300 defense to the various def stats, so it obviously not a flat additive percentage block. If you have high defense and block the attack though with say, a 50 lightning shield, then half the damage gets blocked from the shield, and then the rest affected by your lightning def, making it do even less damage.

Edit: Found a forum post with some testing on attack rating vs def, it seems damage blocked(by def, not talking about shields anymore) is what is subject to diminishing returns, meaning low attack weapons(including elemental weapons since their damage is split into 2) are hit much harder by def than high attack weapons are.
TL;DR Get better at dodging.

Attack Rating vs Real Damage: Analysis of Defense

Post by BLA1NE on Wed 18 Apr 2012 - 23:11
Preface

Long story short: Reim and Yesuurd performed some extensive PvP damage tests with different weapons and armors, Reim collected the data, and passed it on to me to try and squeeze some sense out of the numbers. These are my preliminary conclusions.

Heads up: read slowly! I want to keep this concise, so I might not explain as well as I should in certain places. I'm not saying this to insult your intelligence, but rather to insult my explaining skills!

To be perfectly frank, the numbers aren't as talkative as I'd like them to be. What I mean is: there are more inconsistencies than I would like. For example: two weapons that have almost the exact same AR, on the same defense, will have a greater variance in real damage vs two other weapons that have a greater difference in their AR. But, even though the results aren't as consistent as I'd have liked them to be (consistent enough, say, to derive a formula), I still managed to get some sense out of them.

The Meat:

- Not surprisingly, defense does not block a static amount.

Now that that's out of the way, let's get complicated! I'll cut to the chase and just tell you that damage blocked, like so many other things in Dark Souls, is subject to diminishing returns. Notice I didn't say attack rating, defense, or damage, suffer from diminishing returns, but damage blocked. This is key to understanding how damage works in Dark Souls.

There are 2 obvious factors involved when you attack someone: your weapon's attack rating (AR) and your opponent's defense. In the same way, there are 2 outcomes: damage inflicted and damage blocked. Simply: AR - damage inflicted = damage blocked. It's when you compare the damage blocked value with the defense that you notice how the game calculates damage. And what I found, is that it's the damage blocked that suffers from diminishing returns. This may seem like a backwards way of looking at things, but as you keep reading you'll understand why it makes sense.

Unfortunately this is where I couldn't get a specific formula (but do we really need to get that scientific? Razz). But even though we can't discuss the implications of these results specifically, we can still do it vaguely:

- The higher the AR, the higher the damage blocked. But, since damage blocked is subject to diminishing returns, all proportions maintained, the higher the AR, the higher the damage inflicted. For example: if you double the AR, the damage blocked will be less than doubled. This actually means that, contrary to almost everything else in Dark Souls, AR is actually subject to increasing returns.

- Increasing defense will not give you equal returns on damage blocked. If you triple your defense rating, you will not triple the amount of damage you block. However, depending on the weapon's AR, even though you didn't triple the damage blocked, you can still cut the damage inflicted by more than 3. This actually means that weapons with low AR are more penalized by heavier armor.

Here are some examples that will help make sense of this (from Reim's data):

- Low AR on low defense:
AR: 275
Def: 138
Damage = 184
Damage Blocked = 91

- High AR on low defense:
AR: 658
Def: 138
Damage = 528
Damage Blocked = 130

- Low AR on high defense:
AR: 275
Def: 418
Damage = 58
Damage Blocked = 217

- High AR on high defense:
AR: 658
Def: 418
Damage = 380
Damage Blocked = 278

So you can play around with the above numbers to understand what I was explaining. Notice the AR more than doubles from the first weapon to the second, but the damage blocked does not. You can also notice the defense from the first armor set (nude, actually) to the second more than triples, but again the damage blocked does not. Finally, notice how the damage of the small weapon (a mail breaker+15 @40 Str/ 40 Dex) is more than divided in 3, whereas the damage from the large weapon (Great Club+15, same stats) isn't even cut in half. This explains why you need to look at damage blocked, rather than damage inflicted, to understand how damage is calculated in Dark Souls.

Conclusion

Now, obviously, you didn't need me to tell you that more defense = less damage! But by explaining how damage works, we... lol I'll leave this part to you--I've done my part! Razz In the mean time, this finally explains without a shadow of a doubt why elemental weapons do less damage than pure weapons: since their large ARs are split into 2 damage types, they're actually 2 small ARs which trigger 2 defenses which each have less diminishing returns on the damage blocked = more blocked.

Thanks a lot to Reim and Yesuurd for their testing!

I'm level 90 at the moment. I assume the same brackets are running. I get good action at Kiln and Oolacile Township and I'm pretty hesitant to level up further. My vitality doesn't matter because I don't often get hit, my gear is perfect for my endurance, dex at 40 and faith at 30.

I could level up faith a bit but don't really care for it. Might make my bow hit a bit harder but eh.

zzzzzzzzzzzz soooo many baddies. I miss the PS3 where people that wanted to PvP wouldn't be a fucking pussy and keep healing...

I'm almost positive it will not work, as the fire keeper souls that drop from fire keepers are unique items, they even have seperate descriptions from the ones you find laying on the ground. If you already have her fire keeper soul in your inventory and you attempt to get it again, you can't pick it up unless you drop the one you have, use it, or put it in the box.

so the final verdict seems to be the PC version is great if you use the fix + controller? Is that the case? I'll buy a controller after work if this is true. I told myself I'd wait to see if any major kinks or fixes come out and it seems the dust has settled.

As someone who played Demon's Souls when it came out on PS3, and didn't pick up this game until it came out on PC, I absolutely love this game.

It's definitely worth it. Even before it was ported it was an excellent game, but all the minor(went from almost perfect to perfect) balance tweaks and bugfixes, along with the new areas, (quite difficult) new bosses, and new items are a welcome addition, and make the game really shine. Lack of reward except for leaderboard status in the battle arena(unlike invading) is only slightly disappointing, but since it allows easy 2v2 and 4 person ffa it's alright, though I still like invading. Being able to actually message people to talk to them is also nice even if it's through the bs that is gfwl.

I foresee a great many baddies running at you with the new spells Pursuers and Dark Beads.

Best to just run. Try to weave through stuff because it fizzles out when the Pursuers hit the environment and they can only cast 3.
6 Dark Beads. Best to keep distance and roll out wide.

I'm kinda borderline whether I should use Dark Beads. It comes out so fast and when used up close it does monster damage.
There's not really anything to replace it with though. Currently using Great Soul Arrow, Dark Beads, Soul Spear and Dark Orb.

I thought they scaled the same. Iaito has 5 less base damage upgraded (not enough to matter), but if you're using a katana, you should be able to quickdraw it anyway, or you fail at katana and dishonor the bushido elders, so go Iaito.
