Absolution does not remove you from the book of the guilty. There are actually 2 kinds of sin, the regular kind from attacking npcs, and indictments. The number in the book of the guilty is the number of indictments, which decreases by one if a darkmoon kills you. That number also alters the possible level of the invader, inreasing by 1 for every indictment sin. So lvl 1 darkwraith who has invaded and indicted 100 times could be invaded by a lvl 123 char (regular invasion/summon formula of within 10 lvls+/-10%, so 123-10-12=101 meaning 100 indictments to invade).
That's all the book of the guilty does is make you a target for darkmoons, nothing else. Aboslution is usually only needed if you want an npc to not be hostile with you anymore, as being invaded is a good thing, a chance to win souls/humanity in a duel to the death.

If you join the forest hunters, next to the building with alvina is shiva of the east. His semi-invisible ninja bodyguard drops the ring. If you advance rank in the convenant by killing 2 people, shiva will sell good stuff (including claws If I ever do a lvl 1 darkwraith buld I'm going to use darkwraith armor and claws like in the trailer.) down in blightwon under the waterwheel, his bodyguard will still be there if you hadn't got him yet.

You can't request to leave a covenant if you have sin, I think, that's probably the biggest downside, since you will keep accumulating sin and covenant betrayals if you want to keep switching covenants.
You can abandon covenant at any time no matter what, even if you have sinned. Abandoning covenants by joining other covenants and not using abandon covenant is supposed to give you sin, but it didn't for some reason when I did it on this playthrough, so maybe they changed it.
Well, I don't think you get sin for abandoning your covenant to join Forest Covenant (you get no penalties at all apparently) but that should be the exception of the rule.
I think this is probably my favorite part of the story/lore. It didn't hit me until my second Darkwraith playthrough, when I had more experience with the game and really listened to everything Kaathe said. Pretty crazy. Assuming it's all true of course lol.

There's quite a lot in the game that points that way, it's not just Kaathe spouting random stuff, though the endings are still open to interpretation. Even the story intro says that the flames will fade and only dark will remain, along with many other hints that the dark is coming, too many to list them all. Gwynevere ends up being an untrustworthy illusion conjured by Gwyndolin in Anor Londo, and she tells you to go to Frampt. The player's ancestor is the "Furtive Pygmy" who discovered the dark soul(humanity sprites are dark too. coincidence? Age of Fire=Age of the Gods, so does Age of Dark=Age of Humanity?). The darkwraiths steal humanity to keep people from kindling the bonfires to prolong the age of fire, and in the To Link the Fire ending, the flames engulf and consume the player, just as it did to Gwyn(his soul split into the lords souls) and the cycle is only prolonged, the flames will eventually fade again. The fire has displayed the ability to go out of control and turn people into demons(Chaos Witch Quelaag, her brother the Ceaseless Discharge, made Gwyn Hollow, etc.), doesn't make fire sound very good. The ending is kind of vague, neither is really "bad" per se, linking the flames still stops the undead until it starts to fade again, but so does the age of dark, and if breaking the cycle and possibly ushering in the age of humanity rather than gods/lords is the other option it might just be the "better" ending.

A controller is preferred, but you don't absolutely have to have one. I think keyboard only works adequetely enough once you get used to it, though you can always rebind, mouse is kinda wonky with the camera for some people.
Wasd movement with shield/parry easy to use with movement on shift/tab, camera on the equivalent ijkl with attack/heavy attack also easy to use while controlling on h and u, menu controls over on the arrow keys and island above them(no pause by menu, so you want it seperate to keep control if something happens) though if you are on a laptop and keys like home/end/pgup are not in the standard setup that would have to be rebound.
If you are used to a game like an fps where you often hit keys like q e r f while controlling movement with wasd, and can do the equivalent with the other hand for camera control, keyboard only works perfectly fine, it's well laid out for standard keyboard. I played with keyboard for a day before I set up my controller to work with the game, and I had less problems with the keyboard than I do with the controller, though that's mostly because it has deadzone issues since it's a crappy steelseries controller and keyboard only gave me no issues at all.
If you have a non-360 controller, (like an old ps2 controller for which adapters are like $1, or any other controller), you can still use it fairly easily with controller emulators, like the x360ce which is not too hard to find.
Here's a couple of fights I've had. Sadly it's kinda hard to find good opponents at the moment and many don't bring multiple tools to get the job done. Anyway:

I got my 2nd character pretty up there, just need to find some equipment I like and I'll add some Dex/Int videos.

The problem with playing with a keyboard is that it only has two "settings" when it comes to buttons. Pressed, or not pressed, which can make it troublesome if you're walking across a narrow path

Good stuff, I'll finish the whole thing later when I have more time. I've never really EVER used a bow in this game, except Dragonslayer for random hilarity against griefers, but after seeing your vid it looks interesting. I might try it out or keep it as an extra tool. Much faster than I realized, which makes me appreciate it as an option more than I have previously.
Can anyone give me a little insight into the way PvP "brackets" that people keep referencing work in PTDE? As I'm assuming that will be the same when the Xbox DLC comes around. I'm just curious because I'm leveling a PvP toon currently and shooting for SL120, but part of me wants to invest in a little extra DEX I didn't plan on just to have some fun, it would put me at like 135. I never PvP super serious so it doesn't really matter, but I just want to know if there's some expansion on the "SL120" scene that I don't know about yet.

There should be a walk slowly button, it was mentioned earlier in the topic. (I don't use the keyboard so I wouldn't know though).

If you abandon the covenant by talking to Oswald, you can join it again. If you leave it by joining another covenant (except for forest hunter), you will have to pay Oswald to remove your sins first.
A question: There is a huge amount of armors in this game. Do all of them have a certain specialty about them or are they just good for roleplaying? Otherwise it would seem to me that you should just go for the highest armor possible without breaking your target equipment load. But this seems odd since you seem to find non-caster armor later in the game with pretty low armor values.

Well, it's not as simple as "pick the one with the highest armor" since there's resistances as well. But not, not all armors have a speciality or are even all that useful. It's all about the armor/resistances you get for the load on your endurance.
Generally, I try to get as good defense as possible for my endurance, but I'm always fine with lowering stats a bit to look cool since armor has far less impact that weapons/shields.
