I died there alot too and what I did was remove all my items so I'm really fast and just always roll behind him and backstab. Don't even try to block/parry, if you get hit you are dead.

I got Havel on my first go. Just keep moving out of the way of his attacks and don't ever think about blocking it. Evade, attack, evade, attack, etc. It does take a while though.

I ended up using the parry strategy. It is unforgiving in that you will die when you mess up, but since he was 1 shotting me before, it didn't make a difference. I found that easier than trying to backstab since the fight always went down the same way. I stood there until he tried to attack, parry, repeat. Never attempt to get extra hits in, just wait for the next attack.
You can help yourself out by equipping a smaller shield to increase the parry timing window as well. Good luck, that ring is worth it!

The guy with the wall I talk about is at 5mn40 in the video.
Thats exactly what I meant. How are you supposed to know that?
You are not. The way you would usually find it is lateron, when you are able to direct a boulder in multiple directions with some sort of contraption. One of those is towards that guy, and the boulder smashes the wall behind him.
Also, there is a bonfire at the top of sense fortress. It is pretty well hidden.
The first time I killed Havel I just dodged and counterattacked, no backstabs/ripostes. It took a really long time and I died a lot. I also took off all my armor since it doesn't make a difference, and lets you move at full speed.
I killed Havel the first time using gravity. Run up the stairs, wait until he almost reaches you and drop down. He is heavy armored and gets a lot of falling damage.
hey folks I am currently SL 36 and I am about to enter blighttown. I wanted to know what level I should be at before I enter. Should I soul level up some more? I am following a dex based pyromancer build. Currently I have +15 flame and Iron Flesh. Using drake sword atm. I also have the black knight greatsword but I can't use it. Thank you!
edit: I have 200k souls to spend. should I save them, level up, or buy a bunch of stuff?
Generally you want to spend the souls you have because it's so easy to die in the game and lose everything. Usually you'll prioritize levels, then weapon reinforcement, then shield reinforcement, then items. In the end, it's all up to you. The game is beatable even at SL 1 so being "too low level" for an area is just a state of mind.
I'd say that your weapon is always the first thing you should invest in, weapon level is one of the main scaling factors in the game.
And basically, don't hoard souls. There is no point to doing so, and you will get incredibly annoyed if you lose 200k souls. Generally, you can usually just go back and get souls if an area is too hard for you or you really want to buy x right now.
And beating the game at SL 1 is probably not what you should be shooting for on your first run.
As a midterm plan, i'd suggest getting rid of the Drakesword and getting a real weapon instead. One important notice here: Unique items are not better then basic items. The main factor is how much you upgraded the weapon. So pick one you like the moveset of, and get it as high as possible.

If you play the game up to that point without dying and not wasting too much souls you would be around level 28-33.

if you can hold onto those 200k souls there's another pyromancy trainer in blighttown that sells more spells and can upgrade your flame even further. but that's a pretty big if

im farming 4 NPCs that are in a forest area. They fall off the cliff if you get them to chase you! I know it is cheap but I wanted the +15 flame after hearing that the pyro seller will go away forever after I beat blighttown.
Btw, I am confused about what weapon I should use. I am dex based build with little str. I have the drake sword and it does 200 damage. It is currently the most powerful one that I can fully use. But people are telling me to go for Uchiganata or the Claymore (I have both). However, they do a ALOT less damage than my drake. So I do not understand when people tell me to switch weapons. Thank you!
Because of how scaling works. The uchigatana has excellent dexterity scaling and gets better with upgrades, while eventually the drake sword will start to become weaker relative to the uchi because it lacks any sort of stat scaling. So basically its because the uchigatana has much higher damage potential overall, but theres not much point using it until you have an appropriate amount of dexterity and the uchi has been upgraded sufficiently.

thank you, this makes sense. So I guess I will keep my drake for a bit longer until I can upgrade my other weapons.
I heartily recommend investing in stats over weapons at low levels. Once you have some decent points in your stats the souls spent on upgrading the weapons will matter a lot more.
