The combat is way more responsive and much better than skyrims. It's not an MMO in the slightest. You can only run into people if you are in 'human' form and you are invaded by enemies OR you purposefully summon an ally using their summon signs. Players can drop summon signs in various areas but it's on you to summon them if you want. The only way you will see another player unwillingly is if you're playing the game in human form. If you never want to summon an ally OR be invaded you can play the entire game hollow at no disadvantage.

It's nothing like Skyrim (restated for emphasis). It's not like an mmo, and while you can "bump into people randomly" (depending on how you play the game), there is also invitational play (coop and pvp)

for the final emphasis, this is NOTHING like skyrim. It is one of my favorite games, and watching the speed run yesterday made me want to play again. so gud.

The combat in DS is NOTHING like skyrim (honestly can't be said enough) but I can definitely see how the gloomy grimdark atmosphere reminds people of SoTC, which has a similar atmosphere.

But I agree there is very little comparison to Skyrim. Plus maybe you didn't play SotC much, it was all about exploring and experiencing the loneliness in haunting rolling landscapes. I get that in DS in places like the Valley of Drakes. And the place where there are loads of irritating fly things that shoot poison at you reminds me loads of Resi 4. Resident Evil also being a Japanese game has a similar atmosphere in many places. I like it.

Actually, funnily enough, I just picked up Shadow because I was craving a playthrough and it's been so long. While the gameplay and combat are quite different, it's surprisingly similar to Dark Souls in my opinion as far as the overall atmosphere, feel, and mindset (figuring the shit out, little hand holding, etc)

I would really, really like to know how one could come to the conclusion that combat in this game "looks" similar to Skyrim. This game is not Skyrim, they are hardly comparable. And no, this game does not work with specific invitations, one's character can be in "human" or "undead" form, human form means that you can be invaded ("Bump" into other players) while undead keeps most people out of your game unless you specifically go through the motions to play with others.

If you manage to die several times on a boss by that time you should have figured out the path to him and can just run past all/most enemies in most scenarios. Unless if you mean your first time through the enemies. And this isn't anything like Skyrim.

So, you journey to reach the boss, then you get to focus on your strategy to beat them. I get what you are saying but it's just an added distraction that puts 30s to 2 minutes of travelling on your time before you get to the boss. Getting to the moonlight butterfly was a complete bitch when I had to do it 3 times (didn't know about beatrice).

That way you don't have to runback from UD parish.
