And keep in mind, it's Overhaul Games, not Bioware.

I'm also considering trying a run through the main campaign with only 2-3 characters

Apart from Irenicus's first dungeon you can do things so differently with a different mix of party members. I find it particularly interesting to play this time through with the less powerful characters, and skip some of my less-favourite sidequests to keep my levels lowish and the main storyline challenging. I'm also considering trying a run through the main campaign with only 2-3 characters dungeon-be-gone is the greatest mod ever made for this game lol Considering challenges, Ive replayed this game countless times over the years with parties of 4 people. I like the faster leveling and the added difficulty of some of the bigger fights.

I've played trough the game several times, with full parties, parties of only a few characters, and with single characters as well. The game's at its easiest with a party of 6, as you can rely on the full flexibility of multiple classes, plenty of skills and spells and the use of characters as meatshields / backups should a fight go wrong. The smaller your party, the harder the game gets, regardless of what level you're at.

Still, my stats are good so I'm going to assume that the game gets a lot easier as I level a bit, right now I feel very weak though, in the very beginning I had to tank for imoen vs the first wolfs etc and I had to use a health potion. This is of course probably because I have no gear, so I wanted to know how that works out for fighter mages. I've checked A&D rules but I can't find the relation between armor and spellcasting. I only have 1 magic arrow atm so it's not like I really need magic, but is it impossible to throw spells with any armor outside of robes, is your ability just lowered somehow? How about shields, can I carry a sword and shield and still cast spells?

(when all your 6 chars would have reached max level anyway)

GLHF to roll those stats, I literally tried for like 15 minutes, so I instead used the max stats cheat and lowered some stats to not be TOO overly OP). How about shields, can I carry a sword and shield and still cast spells? you can not cast while wearing armor you can cast with any weapon Dont know about shields but as caster/fighter you dont need one. I once make a Fighter/Mage that only learned defend + attack speed spells, - put armor down before fight - cast all kind of health, armor and resistent spells on me - cast all kind of +movement +atackspeed spells on me - put my heavy armor on again, - cast the +atackspeed options of the warrior - go into the fight = immortal tank, with insane dps (dpt in this case) . I killed the mainboss in the addon with my main char in the first round. At the end i did 30+ atacks per round / the engine could not keep up so you did not see my atack at all It is abusing the game system because in the computer game you know when you have to fight = you have all the time you want to prepare for it.

But once you know what enemies await you and which quests are easier and which harder as well as understand which characters are stronger playing with less members is much more powerful and easy. Taking down some enemies require certain level of spells and with less members (and more XP for them) you will get those earlier and do tougher fights earlier (don't forget in BG games tougher fights actually gave you better items and not like modern games where everything is random and you more often get crap then something useful). Not to mention at some point when you characters are 5+ level of 6man party it becomes a cakewalk as all the content is suited for 5 levels less.

(when all your 6 chars would have reached max level anyway) I found BG2 to be "easiest" with a party of 3 or 4. HC + Edwin + Viconia + (Imoen or Korgan). or: HC + Aerie + Keldorn. This was totally ridiculous... Aerie gets so fucking strong ^^. In general the first 1-2 big quests are harder in small parties, after that everything gets easyer... Once you reach ToB-Levels (which you can do very, very early in small parties) SoA is a pure joke... Soloing is not that easy, but a party of 3-4 is...

Korgan, Viconia and Edwin were all best at their class in the game

Level absorption from vampires also did. god level absorption really sucked. that and time stop were my most hated spells to play against It made the final battle against Bodhi incredibly tense and exciting. Those restoration spells running out while tons of vamps flood you. Epic stuff. This game was incredibly hard if played legit. I mean really, really hard. Difficulty in RPGs nowadays is mostly based on the ability of the enemy to instagib you, abilities are mostly repetitive, cyclic, or uninteresting. BG2 required true strategy to win some battles. Indeed, hardest difficulty was really hard. The anoying thing about level drain was the fact you had to do your stupid spellbook again after each drain :p I cant say i have had many games today where i have had to use quickload as many times as BG I'd say that the hardest difficulty is hard for the first playtrough but after you know what your doing the game gets much easier. Even the hardest difficulty is beatable with a naked character solo.

I hope its just an HD version though, i dont think they can create something as perfect as the previous ones. There is actually permadeath in Baldurs gate if i remember correct , if your character dies and his portrait turns grey he can be rezzed , but sometimes (certain spells etc etc...) the portrait would completely disappear from the group bar meaning he had died completely. Sorry i expressed myself wrong, what i meant was: i hope they add a "hardcore mode" like the diablo one, i really dont remember if that existed, i havent played the game since i was 12 or so.

Well you can just not resurrect your teammates and never use load. Dont see a reason why that would have to be added to the engine.
